Not what I expected, a shock. I remember the clock and that's where it ends.
We would go shopping in Queensmead. We left UK early 1970.
    Thank you for the tour.

It's amazing how much a place can change in so little time - but at least the clock still stands!
Thank you so much for watching - I'm really glad you enjoyed the video :)

You did well to make an ugly sixties style town interesting. I lived there for two years and worked at RAE for 4 years. Enjoyed my time there but I was 20 years old so any place is fun at that age!

Thank you so much! Farnborough may not be the world's prettiest town in places but it certainly has an interesting and high-flying history :)
Thanks for watching - I'm really glad you enjoyed the video and your time back in Farnborough!

Lived in Farnborough from 1973 to 2012, lovely to see how different its become, the shopping centre has always been a constant building site in all the years I can remember lol, I suppose some things never change 😀 oh.......... have you thought of doing a walk through Aldershot, I'm sure that would also be a fascinating upload 👍

How great to hear - it's always nice to see how things change (or don't in some cases ha ha). I'll absolutely be doing a walk in Aldershot some time in the near future - it's an amazing town indeed :)
Thank you so much for watching, and I'm really glad you enjoyed the video!

My Mum was born and raised in Farnborough. We used to visit at least once a year when I was a kid, that was 60 years ago. I have been back off and on over the years since and seen how the town changed. Looks like it has changed again since my last visit. I can remember a very young me gazing through the chainlink fence around the airfield watching fighter jets landing and taking off. I can also remember years later as they tested the Concord engines there. Thanks for a great video.

What a wonderful feast of information, as we walk through this ancient town. I had no idea what an interesting town Farnborough was! Cromwell, aviation, movies and NAPOLEON!!! Wow! I am impressed! Shame the air shows were cancelled - we used to enjoy the thrill of the Red Arrows flying over us. By the way, you have a wonderful writing style - very conversational and amusing. As a former Historic Site Interpreter here in the States, I appreciate your knowledge and way of communicating.

Thank you so much for your very kind comments - it means a lot! Farnborough is a rather interesting town indeed, there's a lot to discover there even though it might not be immediately obvious.
I'm really glad you liked the video, thank you for watching :)

@@LetsWalkUK The air shows haven't been cancelled permanently. The 2020 show was cancelled because of covid and there is no doubt that the show is much more restricted compared to what it used to be. Starting with the 2020 show, the public days on Saturday and Sunday were indeed cancelled for good but the trade days from Monday to Thursday are still going to go ahead and Friday, which has been a public day for quite a few years now, is still going to be a public day.
Obviously, who knows what other changes might happen in future.
As regards to the shopping centre, the redevelopment has been ongoing for well over a decade, mainly due to lethargy on behalf of the developers. It is fair to say that it has not kick started a resurgence in the town centre and it is proving very difficult to get traders to move into the new units. Since this video was shot, which was just before Christmas 2020, some more of the shops in Queensmead have now closed (Peacocks and Bon Marché).
Concorde started carrying fare paying passengers in 1976 - not 1973.
The RAE was actually set up in 1919. Between 1904 and 1918 it was known as the Royal Aircraft Factory (before that it had been the Balloon Factory). During World War 1, the RAF built a number of different types, some very good - some not so great. The most important designs to emerge from the RAF were the BE2 family, the RE8 and the SE5A.
Flight testing continued at Farnborough beyond 1988. The RAE changed its name from Royal Aircraft Establishment to Royal Aerospace Establishment in 1988 - but testing at the airfield continued. There were more name changes in the 1990s - to Defence Research Agency (DRA) and Defence Evaluation and Research Agency (DERA). But finally, all government funded test flying at Farnborough ceased in the early 2000s and DERA was privatised as QinetiQ (yes, that's how they spell it).
QinetiQ still has its HQ at Farnborough but test flying now happens at Boscombe Down in Wiltshire.
Regarding the Lightning on display at FAST, the "T5" designation indicates that it is a two seat trainer version. Most Lightnings were single seat fighters so had an "F" designation (F1, F1A, F2, F2A, F3 etc).
The numbers XS420 are actually the aircraft's individual serial number (it's registration number, so to speak),
I hope you don't think I am nitpicking. I loved the video and am very familiar with the route you chose as it is one of my normal cycle routes.

@@EricIrl Wow! Thank you so much for that detailed insight into Farnborough - I'm really glad you enjoyed the video and even more glad that you've shared your expert knowledge with us! I'm very sorry for the few mistakes - I'm not a Farnborough native, but I hope it was nice to see your cycle route on TH-cam :)
Thank you so much for watching!

@@LetsWalkUK No problem. I'm not a Farnborough native originally but I've lived here for 35 years so have learned an awful lot about the town in my time here. I'm also a bit of an aviation nerd so have always been aware of Farnborough's place in aviation history.
Little did I know when I was in school studying the Franco-Prussian War of 1870 that I would end up in the home of the last resting place of Napoleon III.

I have just seen your walk, and I really enjoyed it, I am one of the founder members FAST Association that set up the museum, we where aloud to go into the old buildings before they got pulled down, very fascinating that was and we managed to save 100s and 100s of items even from the skips, there are actually 5 wind tunnels there. I am very proud of Farnborough and very pleased you walked it, keep up the good work.

I have so many good memories at the leisure centre but it’s almost all gone now 😢. They’re building a much better one but I’m gonna miss the old one

The building on the left at 8mins 45 was known as the recreation centre back in '89. Much pool played there with my mates when I was a student at the College of Technology.

Farnborough is moderately interesting for a day but the town centre is an eye sore and there really is almost nothing to do or see after a short length of time living there, and I was there 15 years. Got tired of seeing so many morbidly obese, tattooed people as well. Ended up hating the place and moving up to Edinburgh has been like heaven in comparison.

@@archiesucksatlife4390 There are nearly double the amount of English here in Edinburgh but you never see what you see down there. Self respect comes to mind.
