  • Today the affordable versions of the Les Paul Jr. are on the table for a closer look. The Epiphone, a long time Gibson companion of affordable models; and the Maestro, the Gibson's designed for big-box stores. I love them both. Watch the video to the end to see a P90 pickup install montage. Enjoy!

    Love to see “alternatives” videos like this. Something about getting a cheap guitar and fixing it up to be an amazing axe 👍

    I won a Maestro Les Paul Jr. in a Goodwill online auction . Put Hipshot locking tuners on , a Tone Rider Rebel 90 Humbucker sized P90 ( no need to route the cavity ) , Bourns full size pots w/orange drop capacitor , Golden Age Low Profile Wraparound Bridge . Saved a ton of money !

    Lil Green Day for the testing. Noice. I initially was going to comment to just get the 2020 Epi as they are close as all get out to a Gibby but I see you’re video is more about budget. Great vid!!

    Brother's got a Maestro LP Jnr. It's a Beast! Cheap as Sh*t. I've been looking for 1, 2nd hand. No luck yet. Bought my Very 1st Squier a month ago. Now I'm Hooked! & I have 2 great Strats (California m i China & a STD Black n Chrome from Indo & a STD "Obey Propaganda Tele)". Just bought that for the Rosewood neck for a "J Page Dragon rep, besides my real Fenders.

    I'd see Maestros in Hastings sometimes, and I was wondering what they were, lol. I think I remember there were Maestro "SGs" in there as well. Alas, Hastings didn't do too great in this remote west TX small town -- which is highly ironic, as Brownwood, TX is a bastion of culture and intellectualism easily rivaling that of Paris or LondonNOT.

    Well done. They sound very similar through laptop monitor speakers, especially at high gain, but at least on a laptop screen, the red and yellow burst of the Maestro doesn't appeal to me. I didn't realize the Epiphone is plywood. I figured at the price, pieces and chunks, or just lower quality wood with a veneer, but not ply. I have a '54 ES125 laminated archtop (technically plywood) with P90, but the wood seems to be fine at 70 years old, as does the pickup. I guess better glues and build could pull off plywood these days, but it might not sound like mahogany (or cost anywhere near). I used to play around, but now as an old guy, just want something to plink around with in the house... a LP shaped something. (I still have a few Fenders and Gretchs, but have always wanted a Junior). I can't find nice old guitars any more at the pawn shops, so I've been checking out used but newer second tier Juniors and Specials online. If the pickups sound as bad I expect, I'll just drop a P90 or two into the thing, since "hurting their value" doesn't come into play. While I'm bitching (it's the rum), I hate what they call "Tobacco Burst" these days. It was brown, not black, and the dark halo was classy and slim, not covering a third of the face as if painted by a mid tier simian after a few hits off the pipe. I'm going to find the least expensive one of these things, most likely an Epi, knowing I'll have to make it mine, and knowing that the quantities and initial quality will never have them in the "vintage" rack. Thanks for your concise review.

    The Les Paul solid body guitar was invented originally by les Paul and Epiphone in 1939 into 41 and long before Gibson ever got involved with anything Gibson had absolutely nothing to do with the original concept of the Les Paul solid body guitar..and this is why Gibson stopped using when it comes to the Les Paul solid body guitar inspired by because Gibson didn't inspire Epiphone it's the other way around and everyone knows this now in 2024

    So P-90s are better? or is it a preference thing? Anyone know?
    Thank you

      I guess it's a preference for me; the P90 has the original vintage look and just big fat single coil tone. But a great Humbucker sounds awesome too.

    Does the maestro use the same size pick guard as the epiphone and the les paul jr.?

      @@gtoneguitars thats great because i ordered one that i now have for my maestro because the pick guard thats already on it has a weird warp where its bent up in the curv part where the horn is at the neck pocket, almost like it was forced with the screw at the horn point of the pick guard, not sure if i worded that right but i cant wait to put the new jr size pick guard on when i do a string change

      I found a blue burst Maestro with the same warp. Any eBay pick guard replacements? Thanks in advance.

      @mi thought i was the only one with that problem, thats weird, i got a les paul Jr. Pick guard from Amazon for really cheap but im waiting for a string change to swap out the pick guard but i was told the les paul Jr. pick guard will fit the maestro

    How do you know the epiphone is plywood?

    • @gtoneguitars
      @gtoneguitars  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I could see the plywood layers in the pickup cavity. I can't say all are made of plywood, but the one I have is.

    Hear me out, inherit a plethora of wood working tools, suffer an unspeakable trauma, learn to build guitars since you’ve already been working with your hands for decades and have an eye for art and head for numbers. Have any guitar you want.
