Another way to make a hole in the sponge is to freeze it overnight in a tub of water and then use a drill to drill out the right sized whole. This prevents tearing and gives a neat finish.

I was trying too hard to be clever; so here's a comment that works.
There are only a handful of go-to channels in the aquarium hobby and yours is one of them. You summed up the reasons perfectly in your reply, but I'll add two more things,
    1) Your presentations are clear enough even for children to follow.
    2) Your DIY products are not only cheaper than the pet store counter-parts but often better.
Your doing a terrific job. Keep it up.

How to drill a clean hole in a sponge filter sponge (Poret, etceteras). Find a plastic container just large enough to hold the whole sponge without compressing it. Put sponge in container and fill with water. Put container with water and sponge in freezer and let freeze. Once it has frozen, use a forestner drill bit to drill the size hole you need in the frozen sponge 'ice cube'. Then let it thaw. - Perfect hole every time.

I used a hole saw and was patient with it. It was a little ragged on the exit side but worked well.

Socket of the right side on a steel plate. Sandwich the sponge between socket and steel plate. A couple hammer blows, perfect hole.

I have two hang on back filter pumps in my 150 tank and drilled holes in the inlet pipe and capped off the ends and put that black sponge on them and it's working great. My filter pump is serving two purposes now. Also have made alot of your diy projects that are working great. Thanks.

I've watched all of your videos and thanks to you I've now built 4 of these sponge filters, 14.00 total. Although, I did find it better to silicone the plug on the rough side of the tile, every time i'd take one apart the cap would come un-siliconed from the tile. I just got into raising Discus about 2 months ago and these vids are saving me a fortune. One question, How often and how much water do you change while growing out your discus? Thanks again man!

When you flatten a sponge like that, if you drilled through it, the hole would come out shaped somewhat like an hourglass. You can freeze the sponge. I've used this method, learned from a friend of mine, four times now. I find a container large enough to completely cover the sponge with water, then freeze it solid. Spade bits work best for me but regular bits will do. Rinse outside so sponge bits don't get in your sink trap.

  • @CNJSTRICK
    @CNJSTRICK 10 ปีที่แล้ว

Joey, I've been using 1/4" lawn irrigation drip line for some airline applications. It's the same dimensions as regular airline tubing, but as it is a lot more rigid it stays where you put it, and it doesn't kink. It fits all of the air accessories. You have to use connectors, they come in 90 degree for going around corners and over the lip of a tank, and it works well as a slow siphon. For some items you might want to soften the tip in hot water before making a connection, and the tubing comes coiled and needs to be heated to make it straight. I was wondering if you have tried it yet.

Great video. I built this sponge filter 2 days ago. However, i could not get the three quarter inch pipe to work. i used half inch pipe, and it is working great. I bought a sponge that is for an aqua clear pump. Not sure the size of this sponge, but something like 3 by 3, 8 inches long. For people that have trouble drilling the hole through the sponge, i used a spade bit. Worked great.

I'm doing a really cheap version of this for my tiny nano aquarium. All you need is a really thick straw, the airline tubing, an airstone that fits in the straw, an air pump, and a tiny sponge. It works for very very small aquariums, like critter keepers.

Hey Joey! Thanks for the video. I made one of these for my 5.5 gallon betta tank, in the hopes of reducing the current (the current OTB filter has a pretty significant flow, which cant be adjusted, and a baffle didnt seem to help). How would you recommend transitioning to the sponge filter without compromising the biological filter already established in the OTB that I am going to ultimately replace? Should I just leave the old filter cartridge in the tank for a couple of weeks?
Thanks for any help! I love your channel!

Hi I really like your videos. I have a sponge filter in my 15 gallon endler tank and rasbora tank. I have a lid made for the tank after two rasboras jumped off and died one evening. The only problem that am facing right is that the popping of bubbles is splashing water droplets all over inside the lid and over time they form big drops. If I dont wipe them off after maybe 6 hours, they start to drip from the top and cause water stain marks on the glass surface. Can you please suggest me any idea so that this water splashing can be stopped or reduced? I don't want to use any other type of filter cause sponge filters are perfect for me for the long run and I just love them.I do want the bubbles to pop cause it causes the much needed surface agitation and releases tiny air bubbles inside the water after popping which my endlers enjoy.

hey joey! thanks for this video. I have made at least 10 of these ranging in sizes from 6" to 12" (5 gallon to a 90 gallon tank).
My question is do you have a preferred airstone for these? As the airstone and air pump are the driving factors for performance on these filters.
A friend gave me an adjustable 3 piece plastic airstone to try and I have used ceramic air stones.

Hi Joe, thanks for the video and the information, but i have some questions,
i am thinking in setting up my new fishroom where i will have big central and south american cichlids as also big african cichlids, viejas, hoplarchus, hypselecara, amphilophus, frontosas, cichla monoculus, umbees, etc...
I want to make the filtration of the tanks by an air punp to drive the sponge filters.
I will have to suplly at the begining:
4 racks that includes: 24x 10 gallon tanks on top
4x 90 gallon tanks on middle
8x 40 gallon tanks on bottom
In the future i will add my big tanks to:
    1 rack : 1x 180 gallon tank on top
    1x 90 gallon on bottom
1 rack: 1x 150 gallon tank on top
1x 70 gallon tank on bottom
    1x 130 gallon on a stand
1 rack: 6x 10 gallon tanks on top
1x 90 gallon tanks on middle
2x 40 gallon tanks on bottom
Could you help me choosing the right pump? Linear Piston air pump 80 - 100 outs?
Another thing, for my 150 gallons i will have pairs to breed and for my 180 gallon i will have 5 cichla monoculus, is it possible to filtrate the tanks only by sponge filters ou hamburg filters, like 5 or 6 sponge filters or 1 big hamburg filter like 4 inches tick? Or i must allways have at least 1 canister filter to get the job done?
Thanks i hope you can help me.

Hey, just made a filter (amazing video and channel, by the way) because I have a pregnant fish who'll be in her own tank after her kids arrive. The new filter is in the current tank, building bacteria, and I have a question. How long do you think this filter needs in the main tank before it's ready to transfer to the new little tank? Also, this is my first pregnant fish experience. Any insight (when to move her, if I should move her, etc.) would be amazing! (freshwater tank) Thanks a ton!

Hi Joey, i like this idea and have been using your ideas in videos in my own "DIY Tanks" ! with this video though, how would i go about working an actual Juwel Aquarium pump head instead of the air-stone idea on the L-elbow ?

    Wow, thanks for the video.
Is the GE silicone that you used rated as aquarium safe? Also, aside from saying "aquarium safe" on the package, is there any other way to tell if something is in fact safe for use in an aquarium/with animals?

How does this sponge filter compare to the ceramic pieces in the water bottle filter?
