thank you! all i keep hearing is sponge filter from dollar store but because i was unsure which were safe i held back. now i know what to look for in physical appearance AND what they are made of to look out for. my local dollar tree is full of safe ones!
Growing up surrounded by maids and butlers, I did not know what a "sponge" was, let alone which sponge to use to build a sponge filter for my tank. This video saved my life, and now Alfred will be heading to the Dollar Tree store to buy a synthetic sponge.
The idea that the commenter has the money for maids and butlers, but is sending his butler "Alfred" to the Dollar Tree to buy cleaning supplies for a DIY aquarium sponge is hilarious! Sorry you missed out on the laughter due to your confusion.
I just found some Brillo Basic Scrub Squares at a local Dollar Tree. They smell terrible, really don't want to taste them. They don't have any information on what they are made of. Nice large porous holes, pretty uniform. Size about 2"x 2" x 1" square. Would they be safe to use in filter??
You just made me put a green scrub in my mouth. But yes, it did not give me any taste and it doesn't absorb water, so now I placed that scrub on the exit of my filter to reduce the force of the flow (but flow volume is still the same) for my betta. Thank you!
Well Iv'e just realized I have been using a non aquarium sponge for cleaning the inner walls of my fish tank and cleaning the air hose. I hope that its okay just to use it for cleaning.
If you've had it for awhile then anything that was going to come out probably has already, but I'd definitely get something else whenever it comes time to replace it.
Haha, I guess you guys didn't grow up doing things like tongue testing 9v batteries or digging up fossils (tongue test is commonly used to confirm small fossils) Lots of things are easiest to check with a quick touch of the tongue
Now, would these sponges be safe for just a quick wipedown of the glass? Big difference in what leaches into the water in a few minutes of use vs. months of being used as filter medium.
what about microplastic in poliyteran sponges? When I washed my dishes with these and scrubbed hard, the sponge left micro pieces of the dark green scrub part on the plate. I don't want that in my tank. I thought you would recommend natural sponges, not plastic ones.
I am currently using a wound vac. I have several of the foam sponges that are no longer sterile (had to use the drapes from them). The foam is a black polyurethane sponge. It contains no additives. Can I use this to make a sponge filter?
You forgot to include the brand of the yellow sponge we CAN use, I have one at home but without the plastic wrap, so I don't really remember the brand. I would like to know where can I buy the one u use.
I have a small filter which pours water from a distance (from upside) on a rectangular foam/sponge and it holds all the debris of my 2 gallon tank. Can I use plastic pot scrubbers in place of it?
I don't think pot scrubbers are a super great way to do mechanical filtration, big stuff will get caught but it will eventually break down and work through. If you're looking to save on replacing the sponge that soaks up the debris, it's probably better to use filter floss, which you can just replace and throw away for pennies.
Other than the label is there another way to tell if a sponge is antimicrobial/anti mildew? I found these black sponge sleeves that fit into my hob filter perfectly. The sleeves sponges are rather coarse so i am planning on putting some Polly fill in them and sliding them into the hob cartridge slot. If it helps the sleeves i am talking about are those that you find in shop vac wrapped around the main filter and it's black.
General rule: Anything made of plastic that isn't perfumed. Other materials rot, or hold water that can grow dangerous bacteria if you just use them for cleaning. Plastic sponges usually have holes that are very similar in size and usually have a slight shine to them, while cellulose sponges tend to have no shine at all and have some very large holes and some very small holes. Plastic sponges are always the same flexibility, cellulose sponges get hard when they dry out. This wasn't about telling you any specific safe sponge since brands vary by store and location, it's just a few hints on how to find plastic sponges in your local stores. You're more likely to find them in hardware stores or discount stores than in places like Walmart.
Any more information about the fibers on the sponges? I bought filter sponge from ebay an the seller said it was for aquariums. Its black, pores are even but big, (I didn't put it in my mouth though) it also didn't say anything about chemicals for mould or anything, was assured it was for aquariums. So I chopped it up, washed it good an used it in 2 of my betta tanks. Wasn't a week later an my bettas in those tanks are now dead 😭 I contacted the seller an all they could tell me about the sponge was that it was made from "original fibers" whatever the **** that means! I am so gutted. It can only be the sponges as I didn't remove any other media from the filter. Any advice? Aside from binning the sponge as that's already done
i have one of the cellulose yellow-and-green sponges that i use to clean the glass (on the inside), but its only in the tank for a short time. will that cause issues too? are the agents going to leach and affect my fish?
I don't feel like it's worth the possible risk. There isn't any way to know for sure what they are using, because they don't publish it, but digging through patents suggests that the chemicals in use are biguanide compounds and the like, which are highly water soluble. No way to know exactly what they are using, or how much they use, so we don't know the safety, only that the manufacturers tell us not to risk it. My opinion is: if you like using a sponge, known safe sponges are $0.50 each so there's no reason not to use them instead.
Angelfish Unlimited i get you. i was going to get one of those magnet glass cleaners, just havent had the opportunity yet (live in the middle of nowhere, yay) so i decided to use what i could find. i will stop using that sponge. thank you
Hi. What’s the best sponge to use for cleaning a plastic tank? I used one that I thought was a no scratch sponge because it was with my fish tank accessories. Unfortunately it does seem to scratch the plastic. Do you have a favorite?
I've had good luck with melamine foam (the magic eraser things), it has never visibly scratched my acrylic windows. I can't say it won't scratch any plastic, though, so if you don't know what kind of plastic it is I'd definitely do a small test area to be sure.
I bought a sponge specifically for aquariums with a wand. I rinsed it out multiple times because I had previously used it on another tank. When I used it on my Betta tank to clean black fungi, it created foam. Lots of bubbles. What is this?
It's "general use safety." Sponges don't work as well for cleaning glass as poly-fiber or those melamine pads "Filter sponge" is usually very narrow and can't be used for a lot of things, like building up surface area for shrimp/scuds, or DIY prefilters for HOB or canister units. Most fish stores in smaller towns also don't carry it except for pre-cut fluval pads, which are $14 for what amounts to $1.50 worth of coarse sponge.
I keep a couple of japanese trapdoor snails in my 10 gallon betta tank, they work pretty well for "auto cleaning" and breed pretty slowly (I started with two, now I have five, in a month I'll trade the extras for betta food at my local pet store) Manual cleaning, I have the best luck with just cutting a bit of filter floss, I buy large rolls like this because I use them for filter media as well www.amazon.com/Aquarium-Filter-Media-Pad-Roll/dp/B01KYS02EG These also work really well, but are harder to get into corners with www.amazon.com/STK-Extra-Cleaning-Sponges-Kitchen-Bathroom-Furniture-Leather-Car-Steel/dp/B01CYTW58Y/ Either of those solutions works far better than any sponge I've used.
I don’t know if I need any snails or anything in the tank. It’s only a 5 gallon and my Betta seems to be a bit more aggressive than other Bettas I’ve had. I am trying to keep the water warm, clean, and filtered but that green stuff keeps piling up. It might be from the filter but I’m not sure.
betta will generally leave the larger snail species alone, and japanese trapdoor generally leave your plants alone. More frequent water changes and less light (only leaving the light on for 6-8 hours a day instead of 10-12) can help, but generally the best way to deal growth on the glass is wiping it off with one of the things I listed above.
Thx. Question, not sponge related. But do you happen to know if Greenbrier International Styrofoam (rough texture, white, small) balls are safe to use? I want to make floating moss balls on fishing line anchored with a rock for my aquariums? TIA!
the best cleaning sponge I have come accross ius simply an air sponge filter cut into bits and glued to a stick or use the sponge filter pads and wrap them around a stick
My whole aquarium with guppies has been devastated it 3 days after I installed that cellulose sponge. Only a single catfish survived. You don't wanna use it definitely. I wish I watched this video before.
Lol i bought some from walmart, and when I before I put it in my tank I noticed it was moist right out of the package, and realized there was some kind of additive in it, even though the package did not say that there was.
Ok thanks. At my school I give out baby platys. U can buy extras and my friend said that she was going to buy a sponge to use for water changes. Now I know which ones to use. Thnx
Do you mean the gross plasticky sponges that walmart sells that are supposed to look like sea sponge? the ones that come on the little rope? I've never seen one in person, but the photos look like they're synthetic sponges, so as long as they don't have an odor they're probably OK, though if you're just using something for tank cleaning the magic eraser (melamine foam) pads work way better than regular sponges
Mischief and Fins ik what ur talking about but no not those ones. Idk how to explain cuz I searched up the company and it said that the sponges were seafoam. They kinda look like that polyurethane one in ur vid but I’m not sure. I can maybe send u the website with the bar code thing which will tell u what it’s made out of for u to check out if u want?
Okay... so when packages say “NOT SAFE FOR AQUARIUM USE”, I thought it meant for handwashing/scrubbing/cleaning. From your video, it sounds like you mean use as a filter. Is this accurate??? What about sponges safe for cleaning???
It tastes like wet concrete smells, more or less. But as for me personally, fossil hunting. Lots of "is this a fossil, or just an interesting looking rock? Press it to your tongue and if it sticks hold onto it for further testing later" goes on in that
I'd soak it for a few days to be sure, but I don't think I'd have any hesitation using polyester luffa. Only thing I'd think is it might plug up a lot easier than pot cleaners.
Most sea sponges leave behind skeletons made of calcium carbonate or silica spicules, which are too hard/rough to be usable for most things. While they'd probably be OK for filter media, they will slowly dissolve (or quickly dissolve, depending on flow). One would affect water chemistry, the other would cause diatom blooms. A few sponges have skeletons made entirely of fibrous material called "spongin" which is pretty similar to horn, and I have no idea how long that material lasts in water before it begins to rot. Properly processed luffa is probably close enough to wood to be counted as such (since it's almost entirely xylem). The big puffy things with a similar name (loofah) are generally plastic fiber, and should be fine, though are probably worse than pot scrubbers for basically anything you'd want.
I feel like using known safe sponges for cleaning is a better practice than hoping the anti-fungal agents wash away. I doubt that using a sponge with additives would cause any damage if it's being rinsed out well before adding fish, I just wouldn't use one in a tank that's already set up.
Angelfish Unlimited, I don't use for filtration, I use plain fiberfill, no charcoal, for that. It's at cheaper, and I get Chrystal clear water, with no plant melting.
I didn't mean filtration, I just meant I wouldn't risk cleaning a tank with one while it's active. Lots of people use razors, sponges, magnetic cleaners, etc to clean algae off of a tank while the fish are still in it. The warning labels on the sponges are to stop people from doing that. thanks for the comment
Angelfish Unlimited, I just use a plain old washcloth to clean my tanks with then give a good rinsing with vinegar water, but with my shrimp, I just clean their sponge filters with declorloinated water and do up to a 50% water cange, don't wanna loose that good algae. Thanks for taking time to chat with me.
If you're talking about polyurethane foam, it's generally fine as long as it doesn't have flame retardants added. The package will usually say, one way or another. Most "plastic" sponges are made of this, either polyester or polyether. Most "aquarium" sponges on the market seem to be just large diameter open cell polyether foam, so it's not really any different from the stuff you find at hobby or hardware shops. To clarify my hesitancy to just say "yes," sofas and beds use polyester foam, polyether foam, memory foam, and latex foam, and they all are pretty likely to have flame retardants in them. I would not reuse foam that has been removed from other products, if that's your question.
What I got from this video: Squeeze, Sniff and Lick your sponges before using. If the holes aren't even, or if it tastes funny, it's made of cellulose, so don't use. If it smells funny, it's got perfume, so don't use.
I now know more about sponges than I ever knew I would.
but what kind of sponge is spongebob?
If the movie is to be considered "canon" then I'd guess cellulose, based on the drying table scene.

Thanks.
2:00 😂😂😂 honesty appreciated.
Is scotch brite ok for fishes?
andrei dolor the more cheap the more safe. Because its polyurethane. Cheap sponge won't use cellulose i think.
Amazing! thank you! Tasted my sponge - should be okay for my turtle lol
Ty for sharing. What about just cleaning the tanks? I always rinse my tanks with vinegar also. Liked n subbed
That was fantastic!
You can always get a cleanup crew throw some apple snails in the tank to get rid of algae
Really good and helpful info
So open and taste them on the store first before buying
Is foam safe?
That question is far too broad. There's dozens of different kinds of foams.
@@MischiefandFins the one we use in sofas and beds ?
@@MischiefandFins its brand new and thanks a lot
Very helpful. Thankyou.
What I got from this video: Squeeze, Sniff and Lick your sponges before using. If the holes aren't even, or if it tastes funny, it's made of cellulose, so don't use. If it smells funny, it's got perfume, so don't use.
