  • A strong neodymium magnet can be used to what probe what types of metals are found in various coins. Example tests on samples of aluminum, iron, nickel, copper, zinc, and silver are conducted. Tests to differentiate between steel, copper, and zinc pennies are also shown. Finally, tests of coins of a variety of compositions are carried out.

Regarding 3:14, prior to 1965, United States Mint Quarter Dollars were made from 90% Silver. However, the Coinage Act of 1965 replaced the silver content in coins with a cheaper composition consisting of a copper core sandwiched between an outer layer of cupronickel. Metallurgists at the Battelle Memorial Institute developed this clad composition in order to mimic the magnetic signature of 90% Silver coins. This metallic composition substitution allowed millions of vending machines & parking meters to accept either 90% Silver coins as well as the cupronickel clad copper core sandwich coins.

It would be neat if someone built a magnet that could magnetize change so he could pick up hundreds of dollars worth of change everyday just driving around 😂

? For anyone ? I have a 1955 penny , gold color in a shiny way , & it will lightly with conviction jump up to a 1/2 " round magnet from about a 1/4 " away . It ways 3.11 grams . More than a copper penny . It looks like about a AU or slightly lower grade . Any guesses on this ? Type of metals ? Maybe a jewlryvsfop could tell me ??
