  • Mexico City is facing a severe drought putting millions of residents on the frontlines of the climate crisis. The rainy season has just begun, but annual rainfall is plummeting and dry spells are increasing along with demand for water. There are even fears Mexico’s capital could reach ‘day zero’ when running water is cut off for huge swathes of the city.
From Mexico City, Randolph Nogel reports on the struggle to access our most basic necessity.

I saw a press conference with the President of Mexico a few weeks ago and he calmly stated that there is no water crisis. This is going to be a massive disaster.

For him personally there’s no crisis because he’s not affected by it.

We've been through strong heat waves here in Rio, but winter and the rain have finally arrived. I wish our friends in Mexico all the best.

Nearly died from the Heatwave here in South Asia this year. Never felt anything like this before in my life. Everything was burning! Can't imagine facing this again next year!

I was there, as well, visiting. I was so miserable that I changed my return flight to leave early. I don't know how most humans will be able to survive in these areas by 2030.

One thing I can say about Mexico. Is there a more family oriented? And they love people more than Americans do my in-laws. We're the best people I've ever met. They definitely are full of love and the ranch and they helped their neighbors. I see more love in 4 years of Mexico than I ever did in 40 years of my life in America. Their hospitality, their kindness, their generosity is amazing and I loved Mexico and it's sad to see that they were deceived as well as Americans. And I just pray that all comes together. Because we all truly are brothers and sisters. And the fighting needs to stop it's very sad.
And I loved helping my inbox with clothes and candy stores. And it was amazing. I just prayed that everybody comes back to christ

The funny thing is, ancient people built there, and had floating gardens because the whole area was a swamp and lake, but it was changed by humans after the takeover.... now some are trying to return to the ancient ways. This is happening all over where people didn't work with nature but tried to control it.

There were less than 200,000 people in Mexico City before 1519. There's 20 million now.

Don’t fall into the trap of “too many people”. If we had built SMARTER infrastructure and systems this would not be an issue. We can use water in better ways no matter what the population is.

I live on a chinampa (floating garden) in the remnants of Mexico City's Lake Xochimilco. We use solar panels for heating. We grow our own food. Most of our neighbours follow these and more sustainable practices. We honour our ancestor's harmonic balance with nature as much as we can. Climate change is undoubtedly taking place. I hope mindset change does as well.

If you search 'population Mexico city' you find that the population is 9 million, or 12 million, or 18 million, or 20 million, or 22 million. Seems to be some uncertainty.

I think I'd start buying dehydrators for my water use. Rainwater collection, reuse the water multiple times. Rain water for shower water. Shower water for dishes and laundry. laundry and dish water to empty the toilets. B
Pee in a Home Depot bucket if you have to with a lid so not to use the toilet empty it once a day with A number two in the toilet. 🤔

Overpopulation is going to make Mexico into
a rougher place as the climate crisis makes water and food more scarce

    • @magesalmanac6424

Overpopulation is a myth. If we build smart systems that don’t waste any resources, we can do anything. But cities have been lazy with how they deal with these resources.

There is a lot of water waste in Mexico city. Why not address that first? It helps.
