It's pretty common with the EV's not sure about other cars. It's marketed as more humane and environmental. I suppose that depends on whether they are cutting down the rainforest to raise cattle to provide the leather or if they are just using the leather form cattle that we are going to eat anyway. I researched it a bit and found it hard to get a clear answer. I'm okay with fake leather if it performs well, but haven't experienced it for more than a test drive so I'm not sure. Nissan uses real leather in it's top trim Ariya and Volvo is using wool in some of its EVs. I do hope it's better than the vinyl we had in cars in the 70s. That stuff I do know.

Your question at the end, should it be more sporty? Definitely not, its a family SUV that will spend most of its life carting about kids and doing the shopping. So the word sporty shouldn't be anywhere near it because if manufacturers want to make something sporty they just stiffen the suspension until the ride is 💩 and that is not for this car or any SUV aimed at the average family

Thanks Nathan, I can live with the front wheel drive experience. Because my partner is 6'3" and on crutches this boxy shape is perfect for ingress/egress. The Air extended range would cover basically all my needs. Great job at pointing out all the pros & cons. I thought about the EV 3 but it really is too small for our family. Great comprehensive object review. Charlie

    Thanks, nice even-handed review.
Actually, I'm looking forward to a time when reviewers consider doing direct comparisons between 'classes' of vehicles (in this case mid-sized SUVs) across the three competing technologies eg: ICE, Hybrid and EV.
The price-gap between the three technologies is rapidly narrowing. This is opening the market to new car buyers who as recently as 5-7 years ago could never afford a full EV or even a hybrid. So regardless of motivation method, a comparison between 'classes' of vehicles could be helpful to many buyers. After all, once behind the wheel and driving a car, surely the features, packaging, dynamics, braking, handling etc etc are what we are all looking for regardless of what makes the car move? Random example: This Kia EV5 is a mid-sized electric SUV, conversely the Nissan X Trail e-Power is an (albeit unusual) mid-sized SUV hybrid (I know, I own one) and the Honda CRV also mid-sized can be had as an ICE. During these rapidly changing times it'd be great to see how the three technologies stack up as an overall driving/ownership experience within each class. Just thinking out loud! 😊

Great review. Would love to see this EV5 with 800V architecture option, ie for faster charging speed. Would then provide a good option for those who want something in between the EV6 and EV9 in size, but still a competent road-tripper - especially for Australian highways... Otherwise, Kia going from strength to strength

So, a real buyers advice is as follows: want to headache and a car + remaining balance for fuel/maintance - RAV4, want a better EV - Tesla Model Y or you just want a fwd EV...then this for you. Price respectively for low models NSW: ~47K / 61K / 57K (as Kia is absorbing the 4K on road to be under Y)

Additionally, RAV4 will have the least depreciation and likely the lowest insurance while the other two benefits from noveated lease. So, in reality, after 4 years, RAV4 is likely be the same 2nd hand price.

So am I correct then in thinking this isn't an eGMP platform car? I like it personally but looking forward to seeing what Hyundai bring out as their equivalent, suspect it will be just a little better in all areas well except maybe the headrests where Kia has nailed it.

In my opinion, if EVs want to unseat Tesla, they need to move toward true Level 3 Autonomous Driving. I have driven the EV6 and the Model Y. The Model Y's auto-pilot is far better. I like the way Tesla shows in real time what's happening around you-whether it's pedestrian or vehicular traffic -- or construction cones. Other than that, the drive of the EV3 was a whole lot smoother and more comfortable to drive.

All these EVs will be next to worthless in a few years when solid state (S.S.) batteries are released. Chery just announced a 1500km range for their new S.S. EVs starting in 2026, and Toyota and Nissan won't be far behind. Everyone should hold off on buying EVs until then.

Nope. solid state battery will be applied to luxury models such as Genesis. NCM batteries will be apply to mid to large size EV from ordinary manufacturers. And Sodium batteries will be apply on small sized cheap EV. And range is not important in EV. Because you can just insert more cells to increase range. So 1500km range of EV from cherry is really nothing. And if you want to read solid state battery market, focus on Samsung SDI. Because they are the most advanced in terms of Solid state battery development.
