I’m happy that you find the videos interesting. I do enjoy repairing amateur equipment and I too am also a fan of the old tube gear. I recently sold all my Collins S line equipment :-( (Cried in my beer for a week HI). However; I do still have my trusty KW-2000B. I am lucky enough to know some of the engineers that used to work at KW back in the day. I do have a number of vids regarding repairs and as soon as I have the time I will post them. Thanks for watching. 73, John M0XFX
Glad to hear you enjoyed the video. Modern equipment needs to be handled in this way due to ESD effects as it is easy to induce faults by poor handling of PCBs etc. Best Regards John M0XFX
i like seeing you work on the radios hope you are going to have more radios to show right not i am working on some old tube radios beed haveing fun with it 73;s kc9kuh
@bbjunkie1023 Hi, Sorry for the delay in getting back to your comment. The test at the end with the voltage setting on the multimeter was to check that the DC switching was present for the preamp circuit. I do have a number of vids with other radios I have repaired however; I need to find the time to edit them so they make some kind of sense.. Thanks for watching. Regards John
Dear friend forgive the daring to write to him on his channel but I would like your opinion technique of the problem of my Yaesu FT-450. Here I explain what happens with my Yaesu FT-450. A few days ago I made the mistake of trying a radio from a friend of mine when my FT-450 was on receiving, they had two different antennas but the separation between the antennas on the roof are 3 meters. When I was testing the radio in transmission I felt a burning smell from my friend and I realized that it was coming from my radio, at the moment I turned it off and when I turned it back on it had changed many things like: - TRANSMIT BUT DOES NOT GIVE ANY OUT POWER IN (AM) MODE ON ANY BAND. - THE SYSTEM (ALC) DOESN'T WORK, NEVER MARK ANYTHING ON THE DISPLAY, BEFORE IT WORKED VERY GOOD. - ESPECIALLY IN 6M (50MHZ) BEFORE HAD 100 WATT, NOW ONLY HAS 10WATT AND WHEN CW OR SSB TRANSFER FEELS MY VOICE OR NOISE IN THE RADIO HORN. - THE INTERNAL RADIO TUNER ANTENNA DOES NOT ADJUST IN SOME BANDS AND HIGH SWR WITH GHOST ANTENNA DUMMY 50OHM ADJUST 1: 1 ALMOST ALL BANDS, I REMOVED THE RADIO TUNER ANTENNA AND CONTINUES WITH THE SAME PROBLEM, THE PROBLEM IS NOT THE INT-TUNER OF THE FT-450. - BEFORE ALMOST ALL BANDS DRAWN 100 WATT CW AND ALMOST 90 WATT SSB. NOW HIM RESULT WITH LOAD DUMMY 50OHM PER BAND IS: 160m ... fm .... 100 watt cw .... 100 watt am .... no carrier no power fonia and digital .. 100 watt ----------------------------- 80m ... fm .... 100 watt cw .... 100 watt am .... no carrier no power fonia and dgital .. 100 watt ----------------------- 40m .... fm .... 70 watt cw .... 70 watt am .... no carrier no power fonia and digital ..40 watt ----------------------- 30m ....... fm .... 70 watt cw .... 70 watt am .... no carrier no power ----------------------- 20m ....... fm .... 70 watt cw .... 70 watt am .... no carrier no power fonia and digital .. 40 watt ----------------------- 17m ....... fm .... 50 watt cw .... 50 watt am .... no carrier no power fonia and digital .. 30 watt ------------------------ 15 m ........ fm .... 80 watt cw .... 80 watt am .... no carrier no power fonia and digital .. 80 watt ------------------------- 12m ......... fm .... 80 watt cw .... 80 watt am .... no carrier no power fonia and digital .. 50 watt When I transmit on the phone you can hear it on the radio horn ------------------------- 10m ......... fm .... 50 watt cw .... 50 watt am .... 10watt fonia and digital .. 50 watt --------------------------- 6m ......... fm .... 20 watt cw .... 20 watt am .... 20 watt fonia and digital .. 20 watt, When I transmit in fonia it is heard in the radio horn. He also seems to be crazy, he makes noise and he seems to have serious problems. I RESET HOME OF THE RADIO AND CONTINUE WITH THE SAME PROBLEM, THE PARAMETERS THE HIDDEN MENU IS CORRECT, THE RECEPTION IS CONSIDERED GOOD IN ALL THE BANDS AND MODES. I CHECK THE BOARDS OR BOARDS AND ALL ARE IN GOOD PHYSICAL CONDITION, NONE COMPONENT SEEMS TO BE BURNED. BEFORE MAKING THE ERROR MY RADIO WAS WORKING NO PROBLEM WITH 100 WATT IN ALL THE BANDS AND THE AUT INT ALSO WORKED NO PROBLEM. I HOPE THAT WITH THESE DATA YOU CAN GIVE ME AN IDEA OR OPINION OF WHAT PROBLEM THE TEAM HAS THOUSAND THANKS IN ADVANCE. note :Now I have realized that when I press the ATT or IPO key that is only for reception it falls even more the power in all the bands, in addition I tested it in reception 6m 50mhz and it has problems also at the reception . Maybe you can help me, my TS2000 is doing this, i thought I was supposed to replace Q705 2SK2569? You replaced Q706? with a 2SB1132-Q ? Then I thought Q12 was the pre amo for the lower bands? What am I missing so I can buy the correct parts
Hi.. Thanks for the comment.. Re: the camera .. It's an old trick of the pros' LOL ;-D.. To be honest I do this all the time as I find that taking photos of the board layout can save a lot of time when reassembling units instead referring to the service information in order to work out where the interconnections go into place. Kind Regards John
My Preamp is doing similar but is intermittent. When it stops working sometimes it will come back alive if i toggle the preamp switch. Other times not unless i power off and remove power from the radio. Sometimes it works fine until i transmit and that triggers the behaviour. I guess its possible the switching transistor is flakey in some way and recovers. Any thoughts? Thanks for your video and sharing.
If the pre amp is coming in and out intermittently I would guess that the switching transistor is OK. I have seen a common problem with these radios where Kenwood have double stacked some surface mount components on the PCB around the preamp area. The components start to make poor contact to the board which in turn can cause these types of issue. I can’t remember the exact components but re soldering them fixes the problem. I hope this is of help.
Hi and Thank-you for responding. I think your right and i suspect now it falls over when on and reaching some temperature . Rather than chasing a difficult one and risking making it worse i opted for an external 6m preamp with a nice noise figure, gain and rf sensed switching. I dont need the preamp on the other bands it supports so a solution for my case. All the best
Finally got my radio back 17-June-2019...Roy Conners took the money of over 30 something people and moved to Florida. Left his son holding the bag...And his son is a Technician. Its a long story how I had to get my radio back. The only problem my radio had was 6 or 7 loose screws that hold down the PC boards that was causing an intermittent problem. But I do think I have this exact problem you are working on here in your video.
@@markwarren7116 you need to look up the story about Cisco in the UK.. he did the same. sold up after being in the trade 40 years, things got too much for him, he couldn't repair so was sending stuff out to be repaired and wasn't making anothing from it, ended up selling up including about $15k worth of equipment including customers radios as well.. a lot of unhappy customers asking where their radios are and Cisco sold them..!!
@@bigpimp347 ...Well Roy Conners is a thief and took over $4000 of his customers money and left all the un-repaired radios sitting in his old empty house and took off to Florida. And then called his son Mark Conners to go get them and left his son sitting there holding the bag. Many people are looking for him. I personally have the Florida State attorney's office looking for him. He took over $300 of my money and didn't even repair my radio. Thank God there is a man close to me that use to work for Kenwood and fixed my radio for me for $20.
Such a shame Yoyo Components, and Communications house are both now ceased according to companies house,. maybe john and his partner threw the towel in or john went back to Icom. who knows but one minute he was there making regular money, now he's gone without a trace.

The test you showed at the end, is this how you initially diagnosed the switching transistor? Great work by the way, keep them coming!
