Despite loving the original movie and the book, I can say I really enjoyed this miniseries. People are so dramatic in the comments, it was not supposed to challenge or replace the original, it was another adaptation of the book. I'm glad the original movie got more attention thanks to this and more room for discussion. It was nice to revisit the Hanging rock in another version!
So... I originally wrote this on another trailer, it is an old post and I wanted to get some comments and thoughts about my experience in case anyone has had a similar experience, so posted here. This is a true story which still kinda creeps me out today. I had no real knowledge of any historical or fictional accounts at Hanging Rock, however, I did know the name of this movie, but not about the storyline, I still haven't actually watched or read the book. Back in March 2017, I went for a hike from Macedon train station (i live in Melbourne) up to the Camel's Hump via the memorial lookout, then down the northern slopes, on to Hanging Rock and then over to Woodend and the train station.... Im ashamed to say, but I had never been out in the area before, having at the time lived in Victoria for 7 years, except for stopping off at Woodend on my way north. So, I caught the train in around 10am and set off. The day was really odd weatherwise, warm and humid, occasional rain, but insanely foggy. The scenery was beautiful, but due to visibility, the going was slow. I can't recall the exact time I arrived at the Hanging Rock grounds, approximately 5.30pm I guess, maybe a bit later, my phone was low on battery, nobody was in the park, but there was a groundsman outside the closed cafe/toilet buildings who said I had just enough time to get up and back before the vehicle gates and grounds were closed for the day. I made my way up the track feeling excited for finally getting there and feeling relief that I got in before gates closed - I had no idea Hanging Rock was in a park, let alone it was fenced off. As I said earlier, I had no real knowledge of it. Upon reaching the summit, I wandered around the rock formations for approx 15 mins, taking it in and enjoying the views, especially looking back to Mt Macedon to the south where I had been earlier in the afternoon. There was a slight fog surrounding the "cliffs", but I could see the sun and the out-laying pastures and vineyards. Then, quite quickly a dense fog rolled in, i noticed it went really quiet, no birds or background traffic/rural sounds and I started to lose my orientation as I lost visibility to about 5 meters in front of me, I started to feel a little uncomfortable, but at the same time was not worried as the plateau of the formation is only limited in size "how could I possibly get lost right??"... Well.... now, Let me explain, what I can't really explain... what happened to me next.... I decided to slowly retraced my track looking for the path going down the hill, i hadn't walked too far from it, but now I couldn't locate it at all. Upon reaching the edge of the cliffs where a wire fence was, I carefully circumnavigated the top of the plateau twice trying to find the pathway leading down... however, I couldn't find it anywhere. I had completely lost the path and got incredibly disoriented. Luckily I managed to remember several formations and had an idea of when I got back to a particular area, just not in relation to the path back down. I am an architect and have pretty good spatial awareness and gasp of orientation - I have also spent many days hiking in forests and and parks, I know how to orientate myself and know how to recognize terrain features and commit a map to memory. For reference sake, I walked the razorback trial (Cathedral Range) in fog on my first go without really needing to reference my map and made it across without any issue. At times, I could just make out the location of the sun through the cloud, so knew where west was... well... some of the time. I was walking around for what I swear was atleast an hour. As panic slowly started to kick in on the second lap, the oddest feeling overcame me, I felt like other people where there with me, not like I was being watched by them and not like they were there that day, but people just there in time, like memories or their spirit, but the feeling of them was, there's no other way to describe it, but really very real and very present. At this point I must explain that I am a true atheist, I am not spiritual and although I can't prove ghosts or spirits or extra dimensions don't exist, I am very much a gimme-hard-proof-first kinda guy and a healthy dose of pessimismto boot. The strangest thing was when walking through the arches and holes and out crops, I started getting something akin to visual flashes of people, memories. I have put it down to an overactive imagination. But... it wasn't just visuals, i swear I heard and 'felt' the presence of people up there, going about their business.... I then came to this hole and ledge that I hadn't been to earlier, as it was more in the interior, there were some names and dates carved into the surface of the rock face, i manoeuvred myself through the opening and down to the lower level, it now started to rain and it was getting darker, my circadian clock was telling me it was closing in on 7pm, but I had no idea as my phone was now completely out of battery. As I made my way along the lower rock edge, I slipped and fell face first, I whacked my knee hard. Great!!! Now I was injured, disoriented, wet and it was getting dark!!! Adjacent to where I lay was a little overhang, which could shelter me from the downpour, so I got up and sat with my back against the rock face to wait out the weather. Now the drizzle/rain felt like it lasted about an hour, In that time i ate 2 muesli bars and re-read a pamphlet I picked up at the mt Macedon memorial lookout, i started getting a little into my head and thought very odd things about what might be happening to me whilst also trying to stay as rational as I could, I didn't feel scared, the whole experience felt kinda safe even though I was now 100% lost and had no orientation of time or direction. The rain finally stopped and I got up and walked onwards, I knew it was getting late, maybe 8 or 8.30pm??, as it was definitely getting darker, my knee was in pain and I was wet, I was tired and felt defeated, I wanted to get out. Then, as I made my way forward about 15 meters into a open area... just suddenly, the path and steps downhill were there in front of me. Clear as anything. The crazy thing is I swear I'd been in this area 3-4 times previously walking around earlier, I recalled bushes and a post and rocks. The path was so easy to recognize now - how could I have missed it 3 times? I started walking down, and as I did, the fog was clearing away and the sun broke though... it was still up as high as when I started my trek up.... 'HOURS' earlier. I heard voices ahead, two guys were walking up the path towards me, I stopped them and said Hi, and asked what the time was, they told me nearly 6pm... I exclaimed loudly... WTF??!!, they said they had to quickly get moving as the gates were shutting soon and were told that they only had a short time left.... I walked off the path towards the buildings, there was no one around, I very quickly walked out of the park, the gates were still open and i continued on to Woodend (it took a lot longer than I'd hoped it would - my knee was not happy) and caught a train back to Melbourne. To this day I can't explain what happened up there, I swear on my life I was up there 2-3 hours, but It was apparently 15-20mins. I can't explain the timing and I can't explain feeling of being surrounded by people's 'memories'. It's so strange and normally I never believe in anything supernatural. Until now, I've only ever told a handful of people about this experience as it makes no sense at all.
Amazing story. I believe one can experience psychic phenomena no matter their belief system. I believe natural formations like that can hold "memories" & sometimes people can experience them like an old film being triggered. If there's quartz in the rock, it could affect everything you experienced up there. Eerie yet beautiful story. Glad you lived to tell the tale!
look up missing 411 or david paulides i think he has a channel now on youtube. he covers a lot of cases involving missing people in national parks. when you said suddenly there was no sound and an eary stillness my ears perked up. this happens a lot to people out in the woods hiking or hunting, its very unsettling, some even claim to have been wondering around for hours or even days only to find a short time had passed. and get this, these things happen a lot around boulder fields or rock outcroppings. ive always wondered if there was a link between experiences like yours and fairies/elves. gained time and missing time are part of that lore as well as ominous rock formations. ive personally have had paranormal encounter in the woods in pennsylvania, i dont think it relates but i know there things out there that havnt been explained.
The original movie is an Australian masterpiece. The pan flutes are so right in that film. What egghead decided to use The End by the Doors instead in this version. Most Aussies would regard this as a travesty and a joke.

Hey all, I just wanted to say that this is my favourite series and to give it a chance because, oh my goodness, will it tug at your heartstrings. I'm a 23 year old Australian woman and this book/movie/series is so fascinating and magical to me. This show is perfection.
For those saying “We don’t need a remake! The original was better!” Firstly, it’s not technically a remake. In another adaptation of the book. Furthermore, it’s a mini tv series rather than a film. I like the original and I like this series. The series wasn’t trying to adapt from the movie, rather a reimagining of the book. It’s like with the recent IT films. They weren’t a remake of the original tv mini series, it was a new adaptation of the book.

I ended up liking this way more than I thought I would. I think switching around character motivations and stories helped. Marion was the kindest, Miranda was troubled, Irma was more snooty but also desperate to find a home, Sarah was younger and more like everyone's sister while she wanted to find her brother, Mrs. Appleyard was not a lesbian like so many fans have thought but a social climber who wanted her man, like a meaner version of the French teacher, who wanted what most modern women have. The guys, I wish I could have had more answers about if they were romantic or not. Marion's story with her teacher was just so obvious and we spend more time feeling for her. I did think somethings like how sexual the scene between two straight girls kissing got were strange, but I think it was also to give them this close moment. In the original movie, I always had this idea Irma and Miranda were best friends, parallel pretty girls and Irma wanted Miranda's perfect girl label but also loved her too much to take her crown and it was more painful that she was gone for that reason.
@@beth5529 I was upset about the aging down at first, but then I just liked the show. I do worry about romanticizing student and teacher relationships, although for this show, maybe at that time the age wasn't so bad. I actually really cared about them and did think they had chemistry, but maybe it was just so different, I went with it. I did have a feeling they meant Albert and Mike to be romantic, but it still felt like Mike might like Miranda and that that was his bigger goal. Maybe, he's bisexual or he saw in her something he connected with, but bisexual men are barely represented. To me, I think the story of Mike and Albert could have used more development, like a real statement of what they were. I'm used to them being straight and friends. In the book and old film, I just thought it was an intense friendship. I've had intense friendships and it can look romantic, but maybe the author did think of them as loving each other. I always felt Mike did love Miranda or his idea of her and in the film, especially, I felt like Albert might like Irma and she may have felt something for him, but Mike is rich and she needs that, so she went for him, once she was away from the rock. Albert holds Irma so desperately when she is found and I always wondered if on the rock they didn't feel their class and maybe she was aware of what was going on.
Watched this series recently and loved it, mostly because of the character Albert, played beautifully by James Hoare. What a great talent he is. Stunning scenery too.
The only reason I like the original is it’s recorded in the 70s so the cameras and audio they used made it really feel as if they were in the 1900s era despite they didn’t have colourised cameras but it just had that nostalgic old feeling that I can’t explain.
I don't think it's necessary to remake Weir's film, most of which exists -- as it should -- in the imagination only. Weir created a framework and made suggestions, no more than the thinnest of deer trails that one is not sure are even there. It should be left at that.
The original film is such a masterpiece, why attempt a remake? Purely to make money I imagine, not to enhance the work in any way because that can’t be done.

You can't remake perfection. Picnic at Hanging Rock is my favourite Australian film. 10/10, and should never have been touched. Why don't you remake Citizen Kane while you're at it?

they did! last time i went to the rock, they were filming (and we got a few pics :D), so everyone was getting into costumes, and they were shooting scenes, and when they'd do this, they'd tell us to stay back.
@@pinkprincezz31 That's the whole point; you're not supposed to get it. I'm not sure if you've seen the original, but it is never stated what happened to the girls and the mystery is never solved. People either loved the movie or hated it - those who love it, love it because they can put their own interpretations on it, and go back and read symbolism into nearly every scene - and those who hate it, hate it because they just want to know the solution to the mystery - and of course, there isn't one.
Did these people even think about what they were doing? What a piece of crap! They should be embarassed and the producers prohibited from making further films. The original has mystery, atmosphere and was simply a truly great film. This is worse than bad from script to actor. If you had anything to do with it I am embarrassed for you, especially since money is all you care about.
The reason people believe it to be true was because of how the novel was written. Joan Lindsay hinted that it was based on true events but she also left it open to readers' interpretation as to whether it was real or not.

Is there any explanation as to why on Earth three young and sound girls disappeared so completely from the scene?... Any continuation?... Any investigation?... I presume there is at least a bit of truth in this story. Perhaps there is at least one more chapter added by the Author to her story with some explanation. This new adaptation from "Picnic at Hanging Rock" novel is a totally nonsense! Where's that creepy peaceful and supernatural atmosphere? The mistress of the school looks like one of her schoolgirls and the girls look and act madly! This film looks like a mixture between a common horror film and a music video clip, nothing special, and completely different also from Peter Weir's sensitive artistry! Really disappointing!
A remake is being shown at a film festival? Don't they usually focus their attention on new and original films? Artistic integrity is sorta dead now, isn't it?
Australia was still a fairly young colony at the time. So people some still would've maintained an English accent if they hadn't been in the country for very long.
Sorry. This has all the charm of an enema. They totally failed to capture the atmosphere and character. Trying to virtual signal and use modern sensibilities tends to do that to modern movies.
but of course "Marion Quade" has been race swapped and is now an aboriginal woman which makes total sense and is in no way purely an ideological current year casting choice, just surprised she's not playing Miranda. Maybe in the next reboot/remake.

pinkprincezz31 I really liked it, but found it hard to follow. I felt it was too long as well. I did really like the cinematography and the location filming. I would watch it again.
An example how an incident which became folklore in Australia can now become an over-commercialised horror story just for the benefit of it's backers and the front office. Nicely done but personally i think in bad taste. I wonder, if any of those actually affected by this incident in 1900 knew it would eventually become selected as the latest round in what passes for modern entertainment in the questionable 21st. Century....i wonder what they would make of it. Poor old Mrs. Appleyard who wanted nothing but the best for her girls and who lost everything so much that she eventually committed suicide after main hullballoo had finished up amongst the rocks of the title....i wonder what she would have made if it. Then again, it could be said that the public must have their fun and nothing should get in the way of commerce (what do i know).

After watching the beloved original, I was curious about the remake. After watching the trailer, I'm no longer curious about the remake.
This isn't *the* trailer.... It's something a random fan made. I would've thought music by The Doors gave that away 🤔

Well said. Nothing could take away from Lindsay's or Weir's masterpieces and this adaptation is worthy in its own right, I think.

I ended up liking this way more than I thought I would. I think switching around character motivations and stories helped. Marion was the kindest, Miranda was troubled, Irma was more snooty but also desperate to find a home, Sarah was younger and more like everyone's sister while she wanted to find her brother, Mrs. Appleyard was not a lesbian like so many fans have thought but a social climber who wanted her man, like a meaner version of the French teacher, who wanted what most modern women have.
The guys, I wish I could have had more answers about if they were romantic or not. Marion's story with her teacher was just so obvious and we spend more time feeling for her.
I did think somethings like how sexual the scene between two straight girls kissing got were strange, but I think it was also to give them this close moment. In the original movie, I always had this idea Irma and Miranda were best friends, parallel pretty girls and Irma wanted Miranda's perfect girl label but also loved her too much to take her crown and it was more painful that she was gone for that reason.

I do worry about romanticizing student and teacher relationships, although for this show, maybe at that time the age wasn't so bad. I actually really cared about them and did think they had chemistry, but maybe it was just so different, I went with it.
I did have a feeling they meant Albert and Mike to be romantic, but it still felt like Mike might like Miranda and that that was his bigger goal. Maybe, he's bisexual or he saw in her something he connected with, but bisexual men are barely represented. To me, I think the story of Mike and Albert could have used more development, like a real statement of what they were.
I'm used to them being straight and friends. In the book and old film, I just thought it was an intense friendship. I've had intense friendships and it can look romantic, but maybe the author did think of them as loving each other.
I always felt Mike did love Miranda or his idea of her and in the film, especially, I felt like Albert might like Irma and she may have felt something for him, but Mike is rich and she needs that, so she went for him, once she was away from the rock. Albert holds Irma so desperately when she is found and I always wondered if on the rock they didn't feel their class and maybe she was aware of what was going on.

Easy folks, it's just a TV series.
Watched this series recently and loved it, mostly because of the character Albert, played beautifully by James Hoare. What a great talent he is. Stunning scenery too.
The only reason I like the original is it’s recorded in the 70s so the cameras and audio they used made it really feel as if they were in the 1900s era despite they didn’t have colourised cameras but it just had that nostalgic old feeling that I can’t explain.
Hateful dread to imagine anybody dared to remake such a masterpiece. Blasphemy.
I don't think it's necessary to remake Weir's film, most of which exists -- as it should -- in the imagination only. Weir created a framework and made suggestions, no more than the thinnest of deer trails that one is not sure are even there. It should be left at that.

they did! last time i went to the rock, they were filming (and we got a few pics :D), so everyone was getting into costumes, and they were shooting scenes, and when they'd do this, they'd tell us to stay back.

People either loved the movie or hated it - those who love it, love it because they can put their own interpretations on it, and go back and read symbolism into nearly every scene - and those who hate it, hate it because they just want to know the solution to the mystery - and of course, there isn't one.

Did these people even think about what they were doing? What a piece of crap! They should be embarassed and the producers prohibited from making further films. The original has mystery, atmosphere and was simply a truly great film. This is worse than bad from script to actor. If you had anything to do with it I am embarrassed for you, especially since money is all you care about.

King Lizzard hanging rock is a real place and girls went missing there
The reason people believe it to be true was because of how the novel was written. Joan Lindsay hinted that it was based on true events but she also left it open to readers' interpretation as to whether it was real or not.

This new adaptation from "Picnic at Hanging Rock" novel is a totally nonsense! Where's that creepy peaceful and supernatural atmosphere? The mistress of the school looks like one of her schoolgirls and the girls look and act madly! This film looks like a mixture between a common horror film and a music video clip, nothing special, and completely different also from Peter Weir's sensitive artistry! Really disappointing!

but of course "Marion Quade" has been race swapped and is now an aboriginal woman which makes total sense and is in no way purely an ideological current year casting choice, just surprised she's not playing Miranda. Maybe in the next reboot/remake.

An example how an incident which became folklore in Australia can now become an over-commercialised horror story just for the benefit of it's backers and the front office. Nicely done but personally i think in bad taste. I wonder, if any of those actually affected by this incident in 1900 knew it would eventually become selected as the latest round in what passes for modern entertainment in the questionable 21st. Century....i wonder what they would make of it. Poor old Mrs. Appleyard who wanted nothing but the best for her girls and who lost everything so much that she eventually committed suicide after main hullballoo had finished up amongst the rocks of the title....i wonder what she would have made if it. Then again, it could be said that the public must have their fun and nothing should get in the way of commerce (what do i know).
