After reading your comment I've just re-watched the tutorial to check I was clear on explaining myself, gotta say I'm not sure if I could have made it clearer what this tutorial was all about. I say from the very start that this tutorial is about workflow techniques for the FM matrix, so quickly loading up some pre determined FM matrix routing, saving us the time of turning individual operators on and applying various routings, and I also explain why this is useful as a time saver. And the same again for the tips about using the easy/morph page. What is it exactly you're unclear about?
what is the fm matrix? how does it work? and why does it work that way? these are elementary questions coming from someone who hasn't used FM8 yet, but this tutorial seems like it's for beginners. are these questions answered in another video? if so, perhaps mention it. i've watched hundreds of tutorial videos over the past few months and most people mention up front what knowledge is required to get the most out of the lesson, and point to another video if they've made one. thing is, this tutorial does show how to make different sounds, but if i don't know why, it's hard to apply the knowledge on a larger scale in my own music. i'm more or less left with the ability to make the sounds in the tutorial... yes this is just an opinion, but i've noticed tutorials from dubspot or sadowick take a lot of time to explain the theory behind the techniques, where this video jumps right into it, which isn't as useful for myself.
MNINE Ah ok, I'm with you now. The FM matrix is where we route operators (usually called oscillators in other synths) into one another, one operator acting as a carrier, the other as a modulator - this method is called FM synthesis (FM stands for Frequency Modulation). And it's in the FM matrix where we apply this, using the frequency of one operator to modulate another, this will create different timbres, and as you can imagine the creative possibilities are almost limitless once you start stacking up all 6 operators in FM8. So yeah, FM8's quite a deep synth, and we're trying to unearth some stuff that people maybe haven't covered with the synth, rather than say copy these settings and make this Skrillex bass sound - where people may just copy those settings, but don't get into the how & why. Maybe I should have introduced this video a bit more, but the problem with this is people will then complain there's too much talking at the start of the video before I get stuck in. I always point out, that if you subscribe to the fm8tutorials website and the adsrtuts youtube channel, there's tons more video's on FM8 (and all the other synths we do), we even did a 4 part series on the 'How & Why in the FM Matrix', maybe watch that series & then come back & watch this video. I've watched a few FM8 tuts over the years and never really understood. This has really helped, thanks
these asdr tutorials aren't good at explaining "what is happening" and "why is this useful".
