Would love to see a video on your opinion on the ball difference from MLB to NPB, since a lot of people don’t really know that the Japanese ball is slightly smaller and has a little better grip than the ball in the MLB.
The balls aren't smaller, they just have lower seams. Combine that with them being pre-tacked right out of the box you can see why the splitter has become a staple in everyone's repertoire.
defiantly. many Japanese pitchers struggle with MLB balls in first time. they all mentions the difference is kind of huge. also they always mention about the mound as well.
I wondered about the NPB ball. It brings back memories of the nightmares of using Rawlings balls after throwing almost exclusively w/ Diamond D1 balls in college. Huge difference for me. The diamonds felt smaller and had higher seams. I could throw nasty stuff w/ the Diamond. I don't have a particularly large hand and I secretly struggled w/ the rawlings balls.
I'm also curious about this. There is an opinion that MLB balls are too smooth, and that they should change the ball before cracking down on sticky substances. I would like to hear Mr. Bauer's opinion by comparing it to NPB balls

One small tip: Move your bottom hand up the bat a few inches. Holding it at the handle gives slightly less control and allows the barrel to dip more. Plate coverage shouldn't be a problem as long as you stand close enough to the plate... easier said than doing when facing 90+.

Soft hands! I remember taking infield with a piece of plywood velcroed to my hand. We used to do it all the time at practice. Teaching soft hands to the people who didn't have them. The first time I took a grounder at 90+mph was interesting lol.
Eventually, we all were playing "normal" ball with paddles strapped to our hands. Pulling double plays and all.

Best advice my travel ball coach ever told me, is “catch” the ball. Don’t exaggerate the hands at all just angle the bat and catch it. In Junior Olympics I batted 2nd the whole tournemant. Every time our leadoff hitter would get on he’d steal and I’d put down a perfect bunt for a hit to get us 1st to 3rd every time. I ended batting 575. With 8 bunt for hits that tournemant 😂 it was wild I had that role but it was only cause no one could bunt to save their lives. And I could and I was fast so. It worked out well haha

Point your feet so you are facing the pitcher, this opens your hips and keeps the bat out front. Do this early to get in position before the pitch. Bend your knees, keep the bat at eye level. Rest the barrel between the pad of your thumb and finger tips of your right hand and think about catching the ball with your right hand.
Yeah, I'm surprised this hasn't been mentioned more. Turn with toes facing the outfield, "squared" with the pitcher. Gives a different perspective as well- easier for bunting imo.

Different league. He would face Sasaki in a bunting situation only about once every 4 years (during interleague play + at home stadium + Sasaki's turn in a 6 pitcher rotation).

Couple quick things to fix your bunt game:
1) don’t
2) hit dingers instead
3) come back hitting better than Shohei
The bat should only move on one plane, so up or down. You shouldn’t push it out or pull it in, just let the bat essentially catch the ball.

Practice, practice, practice. You Don't want to embarrass yourself out on the field during a game. A minimum of 100 bunts a day until your season starts. Once the season starts, set the pitching machine to the guy you will be facing and do 100 bunts pregame. That kind of work ethic will impress your Japanese teammates. Good luck in Japan.
That work ethic is amazing, but they didn't sign him to bunt, they signed him to pitch.

I wouldn't wrap those fingers around the bat if I was you. Thumb to index finger right behind the barrel, this will also help with accuracy as you will now be "catching" the ball. You already usually keep the bat flat which is good, when holding the bat on an angle you're much more likely to take the ball in the face.
Got to get the upper hand fingers behind the barrel or you're bound to take one of the throwing hand. Eric wasn't kidding, he doesn't know how to bunt lol
