I was born 1990 and I grew up watching these. They had a damn good lesson. When I started playing around on the internet as a kid I got addicted to a mmo game. RuneScape. I made a lot a friends from all around the world but what shocked me the most was people asking me about the house hippo and if we really have them in Canada. That they would make an amazing pet or there sooo cute looking.. I couldent get over the idea people truly believed this was real. I distinctly remember someone getting mad at me because I told them house hippos are fake and calling me a liar that we Canadians just wanted to keep them to our selves and not share them.. I remember thinking why would we want to keep something that bugs our pets and eats our chips???

Thanks for your great comment! I enjoyed reading about your house hippo experience. I have to say if they were real, they would be awfully cute... even if they do want to eat our chips.

its funny because hairless guinea pigs, also called skinny pigs look like house hippos!!! and they originated in Canada.

I just looked them up - wow do they ever look like little hippos! Very cool that the breed was developed in Canada. Thank you for the information!!!

Just fyi, there was no puppetry or models used in the original. The hippos were cut out of National Geographic footage in a frame by frame process called rotoscoping and inserted in to the kitchen footage. Simple rigs were used to move the lint and ripple the water as the hippo moves around in it.

I have to show this my friend In Saskatoon! She’s the one who told me about this commercial and is gonna be completely dumbfounded to learn that there are people who thought they were real! 😂😂

It would be wonderful if you share our video! I have to say I was pretty surprised to come across that info while I was doing my research!

Given that hippos irl are the deadliest animal of all responsible for hundreds of fatal attacks each year, if house hippos were real they'd be kind of terrifying. That cat in the commercial would be very dead if house hippos had a similar temperament and bite force as a real hippo.

I was around 30 when the first ones came out and thought the commercial was brilliant.
The fact some millennials didn't get the fact they aren't real though is disturbing...

It might have helped if they had shown how they made the images, like a peek behind the scenes. A picture is worth a thousand words, and kids especially might not notice the words.

I swear this was on in the early 80s or late 70s

@@monapalaschak220 that was what I originally thought too (from the 80’s). But when I started to research the subject realized my memory was wrong. Thanks for watching!
