I am impressed by all the Christmas carols you know Rod. I have to admit I don't know them all, but it's great to listen to something you haven't heard before. This is another wonderful carol that i enjoyed listening to..🤩👍👏
Hi Michael, three years ago my son gave me a book of Carols arranged for the tin whistle as a present on my birthday. I've posted a selection from that book every Christmas since then. I've got a bit of practising to do before next year because I've recorded pretty much all the well known tunes from it, but there are some lovely tunes in it that you don't hear quite so often so next year I think the midweek theme will be some less well known Carols on the whistle.
Hi Ian, I love this Carol too. I intended to record the midweek carol from last week on the McManus as well. Now that I work a night shift I only have Sundays to play acoustic instruments so I did them all on the same night and it was getting a little late by the time I started that one so for the sake of family harmony I transposed my backing and picked up the G whistle which is nowhere near as loud as the McManus. There's another on the McManus next Wednesday.
Hi Ekaterina, the whistle I'm playing here is a fantastic instrument. It was a present from my friend Ian. It's handmade from African Blackwood by Roy McManus. McManus whistles are considered to be one of the best there is, so I'm very lucky to have this beautiful instrument. It's a joy to play it.
Hi Cal, this is my favourite whistle, I've never picked up another D whistle since my mate Ian sent it to me a couple of years back. It's the whistle equivalent of a custom shop Gibson!!! I'm very lucky indeed to have such a fantastic instrument. I have my dream whistle and my dream guitar now. This year Santa might have a problem deciding what to bring me, if I'm on the "nice" list.
Hi Graham, my friend Ian who plays harmonica with me sometimes gave me this whistle on my birthday a couple of years ago. It's the whistle of my dreams. It was handmade by Roy McManus in Ireland. James Galway plays McManus whistles during his concerts so this whistle is far better than my simple playing really deserves. I felt like I'd just won the lottery when it arrived.
@Reeldin58 ...sounds great...I just play a Sweetone one which was about £10....I have one in C and one in D but I do love the sound they produce ..🤗🎵🎶💞🎄🎅
I have a Clarke "Celtic" D whistle which is a "Sweetone" with a celtic symbol printed at the top, apart from the paint job it's exactly the same whistle, it sounds great and plays really well. I would never part with that one. It's the whistle that I take to the pub if there's a folk session going on. I take the odd percussion instrument too. They often go off at 100mph and my whistle playing doesn't go that fast!
I have one of those too but I can't say that I'm very keen on either. If you're ever having a click around ebay and come across a pre 1983 Generation whistle they are well worth picking up. You can tell them apart from the newer ones because there's a line that runs up the middle of the mouthpiece due to the way they were moulded back then. I think they have an authentic traditional tone to them. If you look at old footage of The Dubliners ect it was always a Generation whistle back in the 60s and 70s. You can pick them up for very little money when they crop up, so trust me on this one it's well worth a shot.
Thanks Sam, I love this particular whistle, it was given to me by my mate Ian who plays harmonica. McManus whistles are rated as one of the best there is, it's the whistle equivalent of owning a custom shop Fender. When it arrived on my birthday a couple of years back I felt like I'd just won the lottery!
It was certainly a great tune. The whistle playing fits the song well. MERRY CHRISTMAS

@@Reeldin58 ...I also have a Clarke whistle which has a wooden end piece but I find the sound too whispy..
