A podcast about knitting, spinning and other nonscents!
Today I'll be reviewing the Daedalus Starling, which is a carbon fiber and 3D printed ABS plastic e-spinner. I've been having a lot of fun spinning on this lil' cutie, and I hope this video helps anyone considering purchasing an e-spinner!
***Please note that the rear bearing (the removable metal ring placed behind the bobbin) should actually be sitting in the magnetic portion of the rear maiden and not flush up against the bobbin. To my point about the owners being super concerned about user experience and support, they were kind enough to point that out. How awesome are they? Makes me love my wheel even more!!

Your podcast just came up in my you tube feed. It is very helpful all the same. I just got a starling via mail order and had a couple questions. I think that you covered all the bases. Thank you!
You sold me fellow Long Islander!
We met one year at SSK. Nice to see you. Didn’t know you had a podcast.
Hi!!! I'm soooo glad and I know you will LOVE the wheel!! We have a KnitScents Podcast group on Rav and I would LOVE it if you post and let us know what you think when you receive the wheel!! Are you going to Rhinebeck this year? Would love to see you! :)
Please check the position of your rear bearing it should sit in the magnets on the rear cup.
Yes! Thank you for pointing that out. I realized later 'cause I was looking at it virtually upside down in the monitor. You just totally proved my point about your total commitment to your product and making it a user friendly experience!! I'll make a note in the comments above. Thanks again!
@Rebecca Giles I rewatched the video on the website and I think I found the source of confusion. I'm not sure if it was an earlier model, but the video shows a bushing being pushed up against the bobbin. I think that's where my confusion came from. That bushing was rubber and it sounds like the previous rear maiden was leather?? Thank you for clarifying that on this version the bearing sits in the metal rear maiden. Spins like a dream!
Great review! Thanks for pointing me in your direction. That thing is SUPER quiet!
Thank you so much!! I'm so glad you liked it!!
Right? All my wheels make varying types of noise which drives me nuts, but this one is a whisper!! I'm so glad it was helpful! 🥰
This looks great. But I would prefer the speed control be rotated 90° to face forward so that it turns in the same direction like the scotch tension knob. That way, we can see where it is set to. As it is now, you have to guess.
Where is the external controller?
Asking in December 2021.
Maybe it has been upgraded since then?
Did you get an answer about the tension nob? Is it supposed to be that loose?
I actually haven't followed up with them because I noticed that the play in the knob doesn't actually affect the tension itself. I have very little tension on the brake band and the play in the knob doesn't change that. If I increase the tension I've noticed that the play again doesn't seem to affect the tension I have set. I will try to follow up and if I get a response I'll be sure to post it here.
I can say that I've been very pleased with the wheel and I'm so happy to have my spinning mojo back!! LOL
@@Knitscents Thank you for the detailed review it helped a lot. I would suggest putting a note or some such in the video when you bring up the nob play and what you've discovered since playing with it a bit more. :) just to finish off the review on it.
I've been doing research about the materials he uses and the design of the wheel and he's really done a fantastic job!
its 12v or 24v
Hi! I believe it is 12v. :)
thank you
