Thank you for making this video. As a single mother I do a lot of maintenance on my own. In this case, I had a nail hole in my galvanize roof. So flash band and a blow dryer did the trick. And hi from Trinidad 🇹🇹
I used some of this today on my shed roof. I've installed torch-on underlay and then shingles and was looking for something to seal the ridge as an extra waterproofing measure before applying ridge shingles. I remembered this video and got some of this from Screwfix. I used the primer following the instructions and it was really sunny today so it stuck incredibly well. Fantastic! Thanks for the video.
I have just used some of this in France to repair the sides of one of our pool skimmers, which now has vertical splits on on both sides, due to pressure from above because of the weight of a terrace which has dropped, good stuff it works, thanks!
My first time to use this today mines not sticky at all. Hair dryer managed to hold a few bit's but I give up to find out is it meant to be very tacky sticky or completely unsticky.. help..using it on roof tiles on the inside of my attic, 170 year old roof,,never been repaired before..is my mistake that it's upside down yet mine completely no glue on mine.so annoying costs a lot..
It really needs to be applied in warmer weather. Once the winter months set in, you will struggle to get it to stick. It’s a bit like painting outside, it should be avoided in cold weather!
I use this and seal with a blowtorch. I find if I don't do that some areas may lift off. Only problem I have now is the flashband is silver while my roof is red. Is there any way to paint it?
I'm not sure, you might be able to prime it using Zinsser Bullseye 123, then paint it using some red paint. (I have never tried doing this, but Zinsser 123 can be used to prime most surfaces, including glass)
Hi, my garage roof has corrugated sheets with a slight slope, but there is no overhang (DIY job before we moved in) so rainwater runs down the wall rather than into the gutter, so could I use flashband all along the edge of the sheets so as to give the overhang needed?
I guess you could try it, although it might just sag down. Perhaps you could use some roofing felt and slide that under the sheets, then add a gutter to take away the water. Thanks for the comment 👍
Hi great video. Can you advise me i didnt wait for the primer to dry up and stuck the flashband on top straight after applying the primer. Does this mean the flashband would not have stuck. I cant check as it is a rented home.
Great real life demo as usual Mr UHM! If you have to do it again how about slipping a small length of copper tube or similar over the roller frame? All the pressure but none of the dragging ;-)
It should do, providing the paint is in good condition and not flaking 👍 I’m sure it will stick better if you prime the area fist using flash band primer.
@@ultimatehandyman Thanks for the advice, I thought the primer was for porous surfaces? This is the side of a semi detached house, sand and cement wall that has several layers of paint, surely that is not a porous surface?
hi handyman. i got a question. for a start im not handy lol. i have a flat porch roof. its started to leak into the hall. i was wondering coud i use this to patch the repair and then use thompsons roof seal to cover the whole of the porch roof. and if so would i be better applying some of the roof seal over the main damage to counteract the fact that the surface is pouroce or would that hinder the performounce of the flashband. if ya get a chance i would really appreciate it if ya can respond. cheers
Is this tape ok for going over a vapour barrier so when I screw the entire warm flat roof down the tape prevents moisture around the pierced vapour barrier?
Would this be suitable to fix a sheet of roof lining (in the loft)? The whole section of sheeting is falling down at one corner! Or is there a more permanent way to mend it myself? Thank you :)
Cool vid! I have a felted roof that has walls round it that higher than the roof and the felt is stuck onto these walls. Some of the felt stuck to the walls has come loose and is letting in water. Would this flashbanding work as a solution?
Hi,Im about to use this on a field shelter roof, and im going to be using primer. My question is,do i let the primer dry first? The instructions are a bit vague, but seem to suggest that. Thanks.
Yes, if I remember rightly you let the primer dry first. A seam roller is handy for rolling out any air bubbles (I could not find mine when I made this video-despite owning about 6 of them LOL) If its done on a hot day the flashband will stick like sh*t to a blanket ;-) Thanks for the comment.
Thanks for the reply. Ive put the primer on and going to leave it overnight now. I will probably use a piece of round cane to smooth-havent got anything else!
Hi, I've just had a summerhouse built and the felt roof is in strips so there are 6 strip lines across the roof where it is leaking. The she people come back and painted the split lines with bitumen but it seems quite thin and has started leaking again in one spot. I'm now looking at painting whole roof with that ronseal 10 year water sealant paint. My question is would it be better to put these flash bands on the strip lines before painting it or will sealant paint alone suffice?
Ultimate Handyman well no guarantees as such. I had a pro roofer come out to inspect and he said they had not torch felt it on. I must admit I didn't see them using a flame, just nailed it. The shed people claim they only torch felt corners not the whole thing as it doesn't look good aesthetically. As far as I'm concerned they didn't torch felt anything. They've now agreed to come out again this week and re do it. What should I be asking them to do? Torch felt the laps? Or all of it? Only one layer of felt was applied. The pro roofer said a summers house should have two layers for better longevity.
Ultimate Handyman I agree. They're now saying the felt they use Has had many complaints from customers. They're now going to torch felt a new brand of thicker felt next week. Thanks
Hello sir i was wondering. I use the flashband in my roof but there’s a process that i need to use silicone sealant and then i put the flashband but i notice on the box that there’s an instruction like this ‘Flashband is bituminous and must not come into contact with silicone sealant’. I was wondering what will happen?
I used silicone on a bitumen painted shed roof and the silicone within days turned a green colour, started peeling leaving a soggy bitumen beneath. Just this evening I have flashbanded all the felt joints and added no nonsense roof and gutter sealant for extra measure
I don't see why not, but the OSB will probably need the primer applying first as I can't see the flash band sticking to OSB very well. Thanks for the comment
i dont think i was clear enuff there. sorry. i meant would i be safer applying roof seal to the main damaged area and then applying the flashband on top and then of course reapplying the roof seal over that again
Lead flashing is better, although I do know a guy that used this to cover between the wall of a property and a conservatory and that's still fine after 10 years or so.

I’m glad you found the video useful!
I think you are the first person to comment on any of my videos from Trinidad 👍

Flashband is great in warm weather as it really adheres to almost anything it touches!
Thanks for the comment

I was wondering where you'd got to lately so it's great to see another video uploaded.
And as always, it's top quality advice.
Thanks very much!
I get the old heat gun on till its bubbling.press it onto surface and slightly squidge out.brilliant
👍
i used this to repair a cracked radiator in my car it worked well for a couple of months then i had to get a new one but it made a good temp repair.

Flash band is one of the worst products out there for roofing
Hi great video. Can you advise me i didnt wait for the primer to dry up and stuck the flashband on top straight after applying the primer. Does this mean the flashband would not have stuck. I cant check as it is a rented home.
Not sure about that, as I have never done it 🤔

Thanks for the video, what are your thoughts on painted masonry? Will flash band stick to painted masonry?
It should do, providing the paint is in good condition and not flaking 👍

It's worth a try I guess, but I don't know if it will work for certain. As a temporary fix it is worth a try ;-)
Is this tape ok for going over a vapour barrier so when I screw the entire warm flat roof down the tape prevents moisture around the pierced vapour barrier?
Not sure, but you can get special "vapour barrier tape", I would use that to be honest.
Thanks for the comment 👍

I have used it to repair roofing felt from the inside in the past- th-cam.com/video/q-vg10iUzmE/w-d-xo.html
It will stick to most things ;-)
Thanks for the vid. Also good to know that I'm not the only one trying to do DIY with a toddler chirping in the background... :)
Yeah, the kids often chip up when I'm doing DIY.
Thanks for the comment ;-)
Hell yeah , I'm off out to my shed to fix that roofs gonna be looking mint :)

To be honest it sounds like they have done a bodge job.
A brand new summer house should come with guarantees?
Ultimate Handyman well no guarantees as such. I had a pro roofer come out to inspect and he said they had not torch felt it on. I must admit I didn't see them using a flame, just nailed it. Nice one as always uhm, have just purchased a dewalt heat gun off amazon, the reviews though are very mixed at best, how do u find it pal???
Can you use this to seal OSB joints then use a roof felt adhesive over it to apply felt?
I don't see why not, but the OSB will probably need the primer applying first as I can't see the flash band sticking to OSB very well.

Hi, I need to join a corrugated roof to a flat wall which is higher than the roof. Is flashband malleable enough to do this?
komodosp
Yes it is very malleable, it will easily form to the ridges of corrugated sheet and it's available n several different widths.
would you advise using it on a lean too with corrugated sheets or use the traditional led flashing?
Lead flashing is better, although I do know a guy that used this to cover between the wall of a property and a conservatory and that's still fine after 10 years or so.
+Ultimate Handyman thanks for reply 👍
You are welcome ;-)
DOes the area need to be smooth before applying? I'm assuming the smoother the better?
Andrew Lees
It sticks to smooth surfaces better, although you can also use a flashband primer which makes it stick much better.
Is it safe even when its summer and hot? Just wondering
It depends how hot it gets, in the UK it is fine in summer.
Thanks for the comment 👍
Will it be ok as a temporary repair on a ridge tile
Yes, no problem at all.
You might struggle getting ti to stick in cold weather though, so it might need warming a little ;-)
Great video. Just what I needed to see. Thanks mate
You are welcome
Thanks for the comment 👍
good demo
