But does it play lead? Rickenbacker 360 vs. Gibson ES-335

  • A Rickenbacker is for rhythm, right? But what about lead? How does it stack up against the mighty 335? Three comparisons: 1. Bridge pickup - 60s beat. 2. Middle position - blues. 3. Neck pickup - melodic pop.
Here is a link to the first song: drive.google.c...

I’m shocked at how close these are. Ricks are severely underrated. They are definitely different but are so close to eachother at the same time. I love es guitars but ricks are always a dream. How is it to play? I’ve only ever heard they have narrow chunky necks with low frets. I’ve got big hands so I’m curious. I love the sound btw that 360 is lovely

For me, if you close your eyes, and use your ears to 'see', they sound pretty much the same. Ricks often get a bad rap for their versatility or lack thereof, but, I think that particular guitar myth has been exposed here. Some great blues riff/lead playing too - which again belies the oft-cited claim that Rickenbackers aren't very good for playing blues/lead guitar (on) - Thanks for uploading.

Thank you! My hot take is that a Rick is more similar to an SG than to a 335. Just to explain: For raspy, gritty riffs I find myself reaching either to the Rick or the SG, for smooth leads or snappy funky rhythm stuff I prefer the 335. For sparkly cleans, either the 335 or the Rick, there they are pretty close.

My Rick 360 is much harder to solo on than my Gibsons. (But I guess it's what you're used to, plus set up etc.) I do find that the fingerboard feels really flat compared to my SGs. I have a 350 too, which is a longer neck version of Lennon's 325. I've recently devoted a couple of weeks to ONLY playing that because it's really hard to get used to. I'm beginning to get some results. The narrow Ricky fingerboard takes some getting used to I guess. Totally love Ricks though. They look and sound so darn cool!
