...Thanks for the exposé Dr Ann. It takes courage to tell such. However, the 2.2 assumptions people have are very wrong, as exams are not always the true tests of knowledge. Many people had 2.2s and went on to be great in life, even as spectacular academics. True to the facts, the 1st class and 2.1s get better opportunities. However, an undergraduate study program shows how teachable a student is, not necessarily how intelligent. Many independent minded students do not do well in the conventional university study process...It was based on stuff like this I went the whole hog, bagged my Doctorate and currently work as a research scientist/university lecturer. Many of my students who were average in their undergraduate days with the right nudge, eventually go on to be successful in many fields even in academics. These kinds of students make you know how good you really are as a teacher/influencer. They really challenge you... On the other hand, the sexual assaults are really disheartening, and some of us have vowed to turn the marks, even if it is one step at a time. Academics and sexual favours are totally incongruous. With a more positive mindset, things will gradually improve. Thanks for telling your story. Cheers!
Thank God I stumbled on your videos and channel today. I'm inspired and as a man, I am emotional right now having watched about 5 of your videos. I had a 2:2 and have always felt I wasn't "good enough", I love research because I'm inquisitive. I've spent almost 8 years of my life working in the field though I have a strong desire to further my education in a research area. I have started taking that step and I thank God for you. Ann, everything you said on this video is so accurate. It's like we went through the same thing. Plus we were in the same fellowship as well. Our experiences are pretty similar, I graduated by a hair's breath after having an extra year but when I moved to Canada I breezed through a post degree diploma and earned 2 Masters degrees in the space of 3years. This goes to show that the educational system in ABU and Nigeria needs to be restructured. Learning conditions are terrible and ineffective
I can relate to all of these, attending public universities in Nigeria can be really traumatizing, for someone who really likes to learn I saw myself always saying "school Na scam" after university, but just going through the process of my postgraduate application makes me so enthusiastic about learning again and I'm so grateful for that. I think I was in primary 2/3 in 2004 ASUU was not a problem for me then 🤣
Hey Ann! I love you. I am in 200 level in ABU, zaria. The time i have spent in this school has been the most draining. I am from lagos (state of origin and residence) and till date, i don't know why i chose to go the school 😂 I can totally relate with your story. ABU keeps admitting students that their lecture class can't contain. Every class i had in 100level was filled with torture. Pushing, fighting, pulling and all of that. Times i finally get to gain access to the class, i am tired and gasping for breath. I am asthmatic. Sighs. When you finally get into the class, one's unable to hear a thing from the lecturer. It is almost like a waste of time. In that same not conducive class, a lecturer gives tests that determines the good part of one's result. It is serious! I am on a 2.1 at the moment(3.72) The weather, the hustle and bustle for the class, every of these reasons affects my health. During tests or exams, the crowd alone is enough to make me pass out. I am a very reserved person. Sighs. A lecturer almost assaulted me too. Lecturers are evil in public schools. Thanks for sharing your story. But it is indeed the reality in the developing countries. Victims are punished while the perpetrators thrive. Things in my country are eerily similar. We need a good number of lecturers in the system who are morally right to be able to curb these nuisance. If as an individual lecturer you try to defend student rights, you will be a target. So we need the right people in the education sector.

Oh Lord!I'm so sorry that you had to go through such abuse by a university professor. Did you ever talk to anyone about this? follow another Nigerian youtuber and, she recently spoke about the issue or rape in Nigeria and how no one is being charged. It's very frustrating that women have to go through this and not even get the help they need. God knows how smart you are ans you were robbed of your university credits. I'm so glad you are were you are now.

The two sets being combined did happen. It was due to an ASUU strike that prevented students from graduating in either 2002 or 2003 (no longer sure). This led to an automatic repeat for all the levels and a backlog of admissions.
Here in Nigeria, Lecturers have the power and no one can speak out, those that speak out becomes scape goats. Students are so stingy with knowledge. It is just heartbreaking what happens in Nigeria universities.
I went through a lot in ABU Zaria. I got my 2:1 though but I should have had a much better grade if the treatment was better sincerely. I was depressed throughout my five years of studies and I can't even explain what really happened to me there because they are too much to mention but I can confirm that the worst lecturer I ever met there was rumoured to have no master's degree which I believe was true at that time because I personally saw his name on the MSC admission list at that time and funny enough, he hated me personally for some absurd reasons and he made sure he gave me bad grades in most of his courses from 200 level to 500 level. I still get mad at him whenever I look at my transcript. How can you guarantee students that half of the class will fail your course and then you make sure it happens in the first and second semesters and you still repeat that every year while the Department says nothing about it? ASSU treats students the way the government of Nigeria treats them and with what I saw in the system, I wonder if they are really fighting for the students as they claim. We cannot continue like this.
@Ann One day, I'll will share my story on how I also finished with a 2:2 from FUTA but studying a PhD at Imperial College London as a scholar. My 100-300level experience wasn't too different from yours, I was young and indeed that was my first experience in a public school. On Sex for grades, it was not until my 500level that I started to hear about such stories. Being a Guy I didn't have a personal experience though.

I was held with the only course I failed in uni, a GS course that I had to write for 4times before they could give me a D on a spill over year. Okay, it wasn't an automatic repeat per se. Let's just say, students spent about two years for that academic session.
