    Here’s little about me!
    My name is Meghan Arriola and I live in Texas with my husband Jaime, where I dedicate my time to taking care of exotic and domesticated animals on my farm. We run a rescue and sanctuary for animals like alpacas, birds and reptiles. I do animal education presentations for groups and schools. Our alpacas also do events where we are able to teach people about these unique animals. I have used service dogs for medical needs for over 10 years and I am an advocate for assistance animals and mental health awareness.
    I am an animal educator that brings science related ideas to an audience from around the world by presenting fun and interesting topics in a family friendly way. Animals touch our lives in unique ways everyday as simply being our pets and companions, but how can we make their lives equally as special now that they live in captivity? My TH-cam channel and blog explore ways to meet this goal by tackling things like animal behavior, human-animal relationships and veterinary medicine. Animal science is a great way to teach people of all ages that education is fun and nerdy is cool.
    My previous animal related work experience includes working in veterinary clinics, private zoos, training horses and volunteer work in wildlife rehabilitation, rescue/foster/adoption programs and therapeutic horsemanship for children with disabilities.
    When I am not working with animals, I am working at the health care clinic owned by my husband Jaime and I, where we provide services to low income, minority neighborhoods. We have been on the frontlines fighting covid19. I also have a passion for art and I am an award winning painter and photographer and published author. I am naturally very introverted but I am extroverted about sharing my passions and doing my part to make the world a better place!

    I would like to add to the guinea pigs x rabbits myth. Guinea pigs and rabbits both carry bacteria that can be harmful to the other! Keeping them together can be dangerous because of fighting and illnesses. Its always better to keep a pair of pigs on their own!

    I love your measured, level headed approach to to rabbit care. So many bunny channels and pages make these blanket statements and basically call you a monster for doing anything different. I’m an experienced rabbit owner who’s had rabbits for 16 years and I’ve broken many of the common bunny “rules”, but not without careful thought and consideration for our circumstances at the time.

    I also have two unspayed bonded female rabbits. It really bothers me when people say you CANT bond a rabbit pair unless they are spayed or neutered. I do believe there are some reason to get your bunnies fixed but this is not one of them. Some pairs do better than others but it is not a steadfast rule. 🐰❤️👍🏻

    I was told by my vet(s) that female bunnies are at a really high risk for uterine cancer if they aren't spayed. I've also heard this from people in my FB bunny group who had theirs spayed later on and found existing tumors. Can you speak on this? I've had both my girl and my boy spayed and neutered (my boy bun was getting aggressively amorous with her and spraying her constantly, which was affecting their bonding a lot), but apart from that I do think it's what you feel is best for you and your bun.

I made a video about it, giving different facts and opinions about desexing surgery and encouraging people to make their own choice based on what works best for their situation. 🐰❤️ I will be getting my boys that are not fixed fixed in December as to pre ent pregnancy, because that’s what’s best for my situation. 😁👍🏻

    This really helped me. Thanks a lot!❤ it is true that kids can be taught to be quiet and disciplined. I have 3 younger sisters (btw I'm 17 yrs old that's why I appriciate this video so much), a 12yr old, a 8yr old, and a 2yr old. Before I got my rabbit they were loud and they are hyper. But when I got Bonnie, he was a 1month old. So tiny and sensitive. I got him from an illegal breeder(I'm not proud of it but I did that to save him). So when I took Bonnie home they immediately fell inlove with him and adores him so much. So I told them that they need to be quiet and move accordingly so they won't scare Bonnie. They are willing to change so that Bonnie can be comfortable and they did. Now Bonnie is 3months old and they are still gentle around him. It is true that kids can be taught to be gentle and quiet. And it is true that when they want something they are willing to change and be responsible. So don't go out stereotyping kids. Because personally I grew out to be quiet and be sensitive around my surroundings.

    my rabbit was unexpected. it was a gift from my mom’s friend and i was scared for a bit. I started researching about rabbits since i fell in love in with him. Many people said that neutering a rabbit will prevent them from urine marking, will improve littering training, and make them less hormonal. When he was growing he did start to try to hump me, but now i can walk across from him and he’ll still chill. He also used to circle around me a lot but i haven’t seen him do that in a long time. (He’s about 1.5+ years old). He never urine marked (i have carpet flooring so if he did it would been easy to see and you wouldve smell it once you walked in my room) and he’s been a pro at using his liter box since day 1. After doing tons of research and hearing other people’s situation with their rabbits i’m not sure if i want to neuter him now. Rabbits are social but i feel like when i’m bonding my rabbit with another rabbit(male)he’ll start to fight. still gonna do more research tho. great video :)

Other wise the rest are not spayed. You had great answers for the myths. I’m seeing a ton of comments on cancers in female rabbits but my big issue is I want to see the studies . Do these studies talk about the kinds of foods these rabbits eat ? I feed my rabbit only organic GMO free food and I’m luckily an herbalist so I have lots of calendula , plantain , and dandelion growing … How much of the hay is sprayed ? People feeding toxic foods to their animals which are also causing tumors/ cancers . But we don’t hear about that . I’d love to see you do a video on toxic animals foods . Love your Chanel ! Ty for being so brave to speak out .

  • @aliceb17

    My only main point to add (in terms of whether rabbits are cost effective) would be that another potential big cost is emergency vet bills. It’s always good if you can to have some money saved up for this purpose. You may not need to ever use it, and a lot of vets offer payment plans if you can’t afford their bill immediately, but if you can it saves a lot of trouble.
    Secondly, on the veterinary subject, although it is less of a requirement in the USA, in other countries such as Australia you should also factor in the cost of vaccinating your rabbit(s), which needs to be done regularly. We have vaccines for most Calici strains here and even if your rabbit lives indoors which I believe they always should, the virus is mosquito borne and anyone that lives in Australia will tell you that mozzies will find their way inside the house no matter what you do so regular vaccinations are essential for rabbit safety.
    Otherwise, this is a great, well balanced and non judgemental video ☺️

    I feel like the most common thing is over feeding nuggets. Hay should be around 80% of their diet with the last 20 being a mix of fresh vegetables, nuggets and foraging. Feeding rabbits too many nuggets and not enough hay is going to cause bloat, this is when the rabbit doesn’t have enough fibre, from hay, to move food along their digestive track which causes a blockage. This traps gas and causes them to bloat which can kill them if untreated. Another thing I see a lot is people not vaccinating their rabbits against RHD 1 and 2, and myxomatosis. Both of which are lethal if contracted. These vaccinations need to be done once a year, especially for outdoor rabbits.

    I watch other great TH-camrs such as Lennon the bunny and they say that neutering and spaying decrease the risk of certain illnesses and are great for when you are at a time when litter training is an issue. They also say rabbits shouldn't be kept outside and usually get less attention that an indoor rabbit would. I'm stuck on who to listen to, any more input from the viewers?

      I just got my rabbit spayed (she is about 9 months old), and they found out she was already developing uterus cancer and had ovarian cysts. So I’m really glad I chose to have her spayed. She also completely stopped biting us and stopped pooping and peeing everywhere. But I agree to consider this in a case to case basis. In the past I didn’t spay my females rabbits - and they were just fine!

    • @BeautyStar4EVER13
      @BeautyStar4EVER13 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This is a hard topic that defiantly depends on the owner and the pet. I have done tons of research and there are findings that have shown female rabbits have a significantly increased risk of developing uterine cancer if they are not spayed. I think everyone should do their own research and talk to their local rabbit vet to make the best decision!

    I have two female rabbits, born in July of this year. Should I get them spayed now or wait ?
    Also you recommend getting them spayed together or weeks apart from each other?
    If they are both spayed at the same time, is it best to keep them separated for a few days?
    How long it takes them to heal?

    • @BrittanyOglesby23

      I would recommend getting them spayed. And definitely keep them apart for at least two weeks. It takes a week or two for female rabbits to heal. I would do weeks apart to see how the first bunny recovers.

      Rabbits can take some time in order to be comfortable around new people. Some things you can do to help would be to let your rabbit come to you when he is ready. Just sitting near him and talking softly to him can get him more comfortable with you. Don't try to pet him or pick him up until he feels more safe. You can try to entice him to come up to you with some treats- I recommend dried carrots or freeze dried fruit in small quantities.

      Please spay your female rabbit when you get the chance, it helps with bonding, litter-training, hormones, territorial issues and reduces the risk of cancer which is high in females. Also it shouldn't really alter your rabbit's personality if she's friendly :)

      I go with rabbits to a very good vet. I did an ultrasound scan for my 2-year-old rabbit. She is healthy and so far there is no need to spay her. Narcosis is always a risk, and I'm not going to put her at risk unless it's necessary!!!

    I have got 4 rabbits they are all girls and sisters and they live outside in a big shed and a big cage connected to the shed and they live great they love it and in the summer I put fans in the shed to keep them cool but in the winter I put heaters in the shed and they live perfect so I don't know why people are saying that rabbits must be inside and PS my rabbits are litter trained and not neutered and I am 13 years old

      Happy Tails no need to be rude. I understand this is based on breeder point of view. How ever i show ur vids to my vet and there many health advantages by spayed. About spayed the male only, are u sure? I work for rabbit rescue for 5 years and the female are leader of the colony, female will attack new bunny as soon as they see it. How ever the male are more compromise but they will battle with pee and pup to mark their space. You also generalize rabbit, others breed like holland loop and anggora need a lot of work and maintenance.

    Knowing rabbits the way you do, I gotta ask do you think female rabbits live longer if their spayed? Also what type hay is best for them?

    • @typicalpixel8228
      @typicalpixel8228 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Female rabbits have an 80% chance of developing uterine cancer by 2 years old, so i personally think spaying them is a good way to have them live a long and healthy life. If you are going to do the procedure just go for it, nothing to be afraid of :) As for the hay, i recommend 2nd cut Timothy hay for rabbits over 6 months. You can also mix it in with some Orchard grass hay to keep them up and active (Ofcourse only for rabbits over 6 months of age)

Do u think I need to neuter them? I’ve seen a lot of rabbits. Get fixed and there personally changed and they became mean! So I’m scared to do it! Please let me no what u think!!

    Just speaking from personal experience, my four-year-old is an absolute dream with our rabbits. She’s quiet and gentle with them and loves to help and do my chores like making the salads and cleaning out the hutch that I choose to get for them. She loves to sit with them in the grass while they’re free roaming. Basically the only things I don’t let her do are cleaning the hutch and clipping nails. Besides that, she’s an amazing helper so it drives me crazy whenever people say that rabbits are good not animals for young children. She was always good with animals but our rabbits have taught her to be even more loving, gentle and caring than ever before.

    I agree with your spaying and neutering point. Even just 5 years ago all vets were telling responsible dog and cat owners to spay and neuter their animals, and now we're finding out that it's harmful to spay them so early. I had rabbits growing up and they weren't fixed. They lived perfectly long lives.

      I think there needs to be more research done into this subject. I have been trying to do my own, but the scientific research is not very concrete, and has not been done over a long period of time. No actual for real studies have been done on this. One study I found was done in a colony of rabbits, where the scientists monitored them. 79% of all female rabbits who died between the ages of 5 and 6 years old had uterine or ovarian cysts, but the scientists were not sure if the cysts even caused their deaths, or what even caused the cancer. There are certain breeds more prone to cancer than others, like Havanese, Dutch, and French Silver. These breeds have the highest chance of developing cancer according to scientists. I feel that more studies and research need done to say that people should spay their rabbits to avoid cancer. It took vets years to figure out that early spay and neuter causes cancer in dogs.

      It’s Sarah no it is not fine. just because your “breeder” kept their rabbit in a hutch doesn’t mean it’s fine. did you know that breeders aren’t always correct about everything? keeping a rabbit outside in blistering heat and cold winters is straight up abuse. while you’re inside with the a/c or heating on, your rabbit is uncomfortable and lonely outside

    • @saraht124

      akima hill well, how do you think wild rabbits survive? Where I live, it doesn’t get extremely hot, or cold, so I think that it just matters on where you live. And I took mine inside everyday and played with it, so it wasn’t lonely. (I’m talking about my rabbit, I do realize that other people can be selfish, and not treat them the kind way I do.) and just for your information, it would not be abuse, because wild rabbits live in worse conditions, so don’t you think that these rabbits are fine? Some (I’m not saying all) rabbits enjoy being outside, especially mine. Hope you have a nice rest of your day!🙂

    @johannasvanedal5300 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I 100% agree with all of this myths. I just want to ad that the bigger the rabbit is, the bigger is the chance it wouldn’t survive a castration or spay. I know a veterinarian that doesn’t do castration or spay because most of them die.
    I have one castrated male because I wanted to have a buddy to my female. He is a small Rex and he hade some negative side effects. Rabbits are sensitive to operate because their heart can stop. But also after the operation their tract don’t want to start. That happened to him. I hade to help him start eating again by feeding him a sort of pap every four hour. He started eating after a couple of days but it’s common that they will die.
    I just want people to know what risk it is. 😊

    • @mlive12398
      @mlive12398 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Most outdoor rabbits, especially in the United States, are kept in very small hutches or wire cages. This exposes the animal to all weather elements- wild rabbits would be able to find shelter in order to deal with the weather. The cages are also inadequate for rabbit exercise requirements, and the rabbits receive less interaction and are often forgot about. For these reason most people suggest that rabbits live indoors because their needs would be more likely to be met. That's not to say that they couldn't be met in a suitable outdoor enclosure. Erin's Ark on youtube has really good care for her outdoor rabbits if you are interested!
