My Gosh I wish I'd discovered Joyce Didonato 7-8 years ago when she was singing all of this and the Venezia material, her voice is just brilliant and effervescent!!.
That has to feel so good. It's like being in the night club in your mid twenties, & your song blasts through the speaker after you've had a couple of drinks, you think, "Oh SH*!, that's my song!" Then you make your way to the dance floor as the core of your being is cradled in the midst of seemingly ordered rhythmic mania. Yeah. I just love those last names together too, DiDonato Pappano.

2 years later, and Joyce has still not sung any German opera parts other than Octavian and the Composer, but some songs, certainly. Her German diction is amazing. In master classes I've attended, she's successfully helped students w/ their pronunciation. Her father was a voice teacher, by the way.
+137Newton That's sort of not what she's saying though. What she means is that these songs are to them (people grown up and educated in America) what the Schubert-repertoire is to Europeans, in terms of "inheritage" and the context these songs were/are performed in.

+Alison W Ames That's what I took her to mean. Justin Bieber is Canadian and Adele is English anyway. I'm sure they're nothing compared to Schubert either! Schubert songs are a minority interest in both England and America. I would have thought this minority would have similar views in each country about it being "their" heritage. Schubert never came to England either. Don't you think Irving Berlin is a simpler, more popular taste? He appeals to people in England who would struggle with Winterreise and have probably never heard of it.

These two work very well together. Both very energetic, both American background but wear that heritage lightly when they approach European works.
