This is One of Two Hospital Ships in the Mercy-Class Maintained by the U.S. Navy

  • Detailing the development and operational history of the USNS Comfort (T-AH-20) Medical Support Vessel.
The USNS Comfort is one of two hospital ships in the Mercy-class maintained by the United States Navy. Hospital ships in service with the USN were originally assigned two mission sets that continue to this day: firstly, they serve as a large, mobile floating medical facility that provides surgical acute care in support of US military forces when operating in hostile theaters; secondly, their mission is to serve as a floating hospital for use by a number of government-supported agencies in assistance to victims of natural disasters while also providing international humanitarian relief. Comfort makes her home in port at Baltimore, Maryland, while her sister ship, USNS Mercy, is docked on the West Coast.
Comfort was originally built as an oil super tanker in 1976 in San Diego, California, and christened the SS Rose City. When purchased and delivered to the US Navy in 1987, instead of being used as an oil tanker, she was put into the yard and converted to a hospital ship as the second of such in the Mercy-class. The ship is adorned with large red crosses to distinctly and obviously paint her purpose while protecting her crew and human cargo against attack in hostile situations. The Geneva Convention protects such hospital ships if they carry no munitions or weapons and any country that fires on them is charged with an international war crime.

I was privileged to be part of the concept and preliminary design team. It was actually a competition... there was a competing contender that responded to the NAVSEA solicitation. One of the best projects I ever worked on... very proud to have been a part of it. I was a journeyman naval architect at the time and it was a thrill to work with doctors and nurses that specialized in the design of ashore hospitals. It was sobering to learn about all of the hazards the medical personnel could be exposed to such as un-exploded ordnance and chem/bio residue, which drove the layout of the patient receiving spaces. I had never worked on the design of an air-capable ship prior to this project, so it was neat to learn about NAVAIRs requirements for helo decks and associated lighting. Lots of trade-offs to work through since these vessels were conversions of the San Clemente-class single-hulled tankers owned by Apex Marine. Apex was motivated to offer the vessels up for conversion because new USCG regulations were coming into effect that required phase-out of single hulled tankers for replacement with double-hulled tankers. (This was after the Exxon Valdez disaster). I get to see these ships occasionally and when I do it brings back fond memories. I hope these vessels can be maintained for a long time... and it is likely that they can because the hull scantlings were sized for tanker service, and are very thick steel, compared to hulls that are used for other types of service. God bless the ships, their crews, and the patients that sail aboard them.

    I have a theory:
I originally thought the ship would be used as a prison ship. Now I feel that it could serve as a stop gap place for the rescued children to stay as POTUS hinted. Then once the children have been presented to the public, they can be moved on to more suitable accommodation where they can be Ivan help within a stimulating and comforting environment whilst being helped to recover from their traumas. I expect their stay on the ship to be as short as possible. Then the ships would be free to be used for other purposes eg prison ship to Gitmo. People to be arrested or already under house arrest could then be rounded up under darkness and shipped off to Gitmo, face a quick military trial and put down. Any thoughts?

I seem to remember a landing ship from WWII. It was huge, had some sort of bow ramp. It ballasted down the bow and ram ashore to unload. Then to pull off it would blow the balasit tanks and back off using its props and tractor treads on the bottom of the hull.
This would be a great design starting point for a purpose built replacement. IMHO

We should have at least 6 of these ships. Help Americans during the worst of times and on call to help the world when in need. I don't like taxes, but I'd be okay with handing over a few more bucks each moth to help.

They can do 300k gallons of water desalination a day ... we should have 10 nuclear powered ships like this .. these ships are 45 years old time to up grade .. with the new nuclear reactors I’d bet you can pump out a million gallons of desalinated water per day ...can act as back up power stations during black outs or a cyber attack and obviously as floating hospitals ... these ships are awesome but upgraded ones would be even better !!

No, it's not equipped with any munitions. It's specifically painted white with a big red cross on it so that in times of war it (hopefully) doesn't get fired upon. Any country that fires upon these types of ships are guilty of international war crimes.

And one day soon one will come to NYC!! No, really ....we promise you folks, its coming! The hospital ship just has to be refitted as a hospital ship before it can address the immediate emergency going on RIGHT NOW where people are dying in NYC. Just let them get a few hundred contracts assigned and awarded, and it should be arriving....any week now, we promise!!
