Well done Micael, the glass shards came out great, light is key. I rarely get artifacts with Zerene, I had compared the two. When you pay for Zerene, it's yours also.

A very interesting and informative video. I've been stacking myself for over 4 years now. I use Chinese macro rails for about $ 70. And I have enough of them for 7:1 magnification. I can't get more with my lens. These rails are very good, but too expensive in my opinion. You can find no worse for a price 3 times less.

Great job. You should do more focus stacking to compliment your non stacking work. You do a great job plus you already have what you need. It gets much faster over time. With a little more light and aperture you can get your stacks way down. Stacks of 10 to 25 photos can produce awesome photos. No need to have everything in focus. Use it to widen your macro dof as well. Hope to encorage you to explore that side of macro more.

There is an unofficial Focus-Bracketing App for Sony Cameras. You just need a supported Camera (Alpha 6000) and a MacroLlens with Focus Motor (not a manual Lens).
Sadly Sony removed App support with the a6400 :-(

Those are very nice shots. I've been using an older mini mill table (for metalworking) to which I mount my camera. It's a manual operation, so it's time consuming. If I'm careful I can consistently move a tenth of a millimeter per shot. I don't have a stacking software, but PhotoShop works well enough.

I was doing some stacking when your post came up. I use photoshop to process and I hate it.... Takes ages. Tried Helicon and am tempted. Maybe winter is the time to buy a small pond net and take your daughter pond dipping. Dragonfly larvae can be put into a white tray and photographed. Even when it is cold. Caddis fly, too

Digicam software has focus stacking. Just connect any dslr to your laptop and software conttols everything you desire, even focus stacking at any increments
    And it’s free

I follow your youtube and Instagram channel and I really notice that you don't like stacking focus photos very much, I believe I admire your photos more precisely because of that because it gives the impression of having focus where you really need it

I've been constructing my own version of this type of automated stacker, (both mechanical base and controller) for the past year and only completed it two months ago.
I can say that given the RnD needed, the parts cost and the niche application, sadly 500$ are more or less justified for something like this. And I built my own because the cost seemed high at first...

The bokeh looks a bit strange on a few of those stacked images. It does look cool tho and what you can create.

    Thanks Michael!
I have been wondering about which of the two approaches to focus stacking is preferable - if it matters. The one where you change the focus of the lens, or the one where you move the camera? When you move the camera, the size of the image will change, but that can of course easily be corrected for. But what about the changing occlusion of background, as you move the camera? Is that a worse problem with 'camera movement' than with 'lens focusing'? Or, perhaps focus breathing is so significant in practice when you you lens focusing that in practise you end up with much the same problem?
If this makes any sense to you I would love to hear your thoughts!

    • @MicaelWidell
      @MicaelWidell  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yeah you have a point. On high magnifications I think you pretty much have to move the lens+camera, as you will not be able to turn the focusing ring with enough precision. Also I wonder if most macro lenses don't have enough focus breathing at high magnifications so that it doesn't matter? I have a hunch that it will be the same either way. The changing occlusion of the background I think will happen in either case - but I haven't tried. I think this is what sometimes gives you artifacts and "weird bokeh". And yes, the size of the frame will change. You simply will have to take it into account and preferably do your composition when the focus is the farthest away, as that will be your final framing.

Looks like a lovely setup you were evaluating there. Thanks for posting.
Perhaps you should have a brief look at one of the cheaper focus rail-stack/close-up rails + lightroom? I don't have the same magnification levels you have (yet), but I do get some great results. All the rail requires is the user just incrementally turning the movement dial on the slider. I am guessing it is a tedious process for some, but it's certainly cheaper ;)
