  • Husky sockets are junk. *UPDATE* As I stated in the video, I took these back to my local Home Depot and put these issues on display. I didn't even need to ask, they didn't expect me to keep them acknowledging the issues with the manufacturer. They agreed to notify their district manager and set them aside to be reviewed by other management. That said, to my local Home Depot and their great employees, thank you for handling this with out question.

    I bought the 270 set from HD a few years back when it was on sale for like 100 bucks to keep in my truck. Most were chromed but some weren’t. I called HD and they told me to bring in the set, show the ones that weren’t chrome plated and when I did they literally gave me every single one that wasn’t chromed or polished as you mentioned. Anything that had any defect they would go through the store and exchange it. No questions asked. Lifetime warranty. Can’t beat it. Been using them for a long time now, for what I do it’s served it’s purpose and I take care of them so hopefully they’ll last me a while. Also lastly, use impact sockets on impact guns. Simple strategy.

    1) Husky tools have a lifetime warranty. Break something? They'll exchange it no questions asked, no receipt needed.
    2) I hear this nonsense repeated a lot that if something is made in China that means it's junk. I've had plenty of shit US-made products and the bottom line is that if the company orders a product made at lower quality, that's what you get. If they order a higher quality with better material, then you get that. That doesn't change regardless of where its made. I have plenty of stuff of perfectly fine quality that came out of China. I don’t have a lot of experience with buying new tools (I mostly used older tools of my grandfather) so I admit I am not an expert authority on it but I did buy husky tools specifically because I thought they were a little better than the competition and now I’m not so sure (there were some issues in my set as well). Do the other budget brands have as many issues on a set of the same size? It looks like this guy has several major issues on a set that was like 40 pieces.

    Arrived at this video trying to figure out what tools to buy now. It's a mess of a landscape, very hard to tell what to buy since nothing is made in the USA except for the most expensive tools. I think the problem is inflation. I looked up an old Sears catalog from 1989 and Craftsman sockets were about $3.00 per socket, or the equivalent of $7.50 per socket today in 2024 when adjusted for inflation. Husky sockets in kits are only around $1.00-$2.00 per socket. So that's where the quality difference is coming from... if we want quality, we have to pay more than 2024 dollars for sockets and tools.
    I agree, nobody is listing country of manufacture anywhere on the tool, it's a nightmare, a lot is made in India now, and the prices for those tools aren't the cheapest, either. There are a bunch of YT videos online of how tools are made in India and you wouldn't believe it, it looks like the stone ages.
    As an example of inflation, in 1989 a Craftsman 15-pc metric wrench set was $47.99. That's equivalent to $120.88 today. But on Lowe's right now, a Craftsman 15-pc metric wrench set is $49.98. So if we want 1980's Craftsman quality, we pretty much need to go up to Milwaukee set which is about $140 or maybe an Icon 14-pc set for $120. I guess there's no way around the fact that the dollar is worth a lot less than it used to be.

    I’ve been buying newer husky tools specifically sockets for the past year or so. Yea I admit they aren’t snap on and have some imperfections but I’ll tell you they do hold up pretty well. I broke a breaker bar trying to remove an axle nut walked in about 2 years after purchase walked out with a brand new one under warranty. No cost. And I’ve used all my chrome sockets on air impacts. Hell not even electric ones I mean snap on air guns. And not a single one has broke. I agree sometimes quality isn’t the greatest but they last and they honor the lifetime warranty. I had a small toolbox lock not release on the bottom drawer home depot broke into the toolbox and replaced it and the sockets in there for free. They could’ve just handed me my sockets but they said they would warranty the box and it’s contents since it was filled with all husky items.

    Recently got one of the similar sets that comes in the stackable case. Ratchet is great. Slim. Low back drag. But those sockets….I can forgive the weird chrome at this price but they literally dangle off the anvil of ratchet with the set. Trying the sockets out on other ratchets, they felt decent on the quick release 90t Tekton 3/8 but they were still resting on the end of the anvil. On non quick release ratchets (an SK, Carlyle and Snapon) it fit pretty well on the f80 snapon. The SK LP90 (HORRIBLE lol) and Carlyle both had the socket “try” to snug up but then rested back onto the end of the anvil if that makes sense.
    Anyway, at the price of the set I got I’ll just keep it in one of the vehicles as a spare kit. It does have a nice case and the ratchet is a good one.

    This video is a year old but a few things I wanted to mention. The mfg defect socket, you could have walk in the store and have it replaced. You also probably could have returned the entire set for an exchange or refund. About the socket with the deep dished drive end you mentioned about leverage because the socket is further out causing more leverage. The ratchet would handle it the same way if using an extention on the ratchet. Agree huskey quality has gone way down after home depot bought them out. Same with Dewalt, I just had a drill driver bit separate from the hex shank because the crimp failed. These bits really needed to be spot welded in place.

I agree those are garbage, but they don't reflect the brand of husky. At that time they just had a shifty manufacturer for the sockets. I'm guessing quality has been fixed.

      I have some old husky pro wrenches too. I think Ive had them at least 12 years at this point. They are great wrenches. It was tools like those that made me order the Husky sockets....Ive sence discovered Tekton. Ive ordered every socket they offer and I am shocked at the quality to cost ratio. Ever looking for some tools, check out Tekton.

      From my experience, it is a hit or miss on the warranty knowledge of the employee you encounter at customer service desk. My first time warranting a single tool from a set. The employee told me I need to turn in the entire set just to get warranty on a 1/4 ratchet. Customer service gave me a hard time since I only had the 1/4 ratchet. Nothing special about the ratchet. I did not expect to be told to turn in my entire set for one ratchet. I did not want to do 2 trips so I just bought another 1/4 wrench and returned the broken one. I just told them it broke. (I know it is not the right thing to do but I was given a hard time over lifetime warranty.) Spoke with the .com site and they told me they should not have given me a hard time like that, specially for a tool that is likely sold as a single tool in stores in stock. My second experience, this time I was more informed. I grabbed the husky tire inflator off the shelf and brought both to customer service. She told me I had to call for warranty. I showed her the label on the back side stating, can be warrantied by call or in stores. She did a one for one swap. She still said next time I have to call for warranty instead.. In my mind I was shaking my head. She was firm about me calling next time even when I showed her the fine print lol Last week, I did the same, brought exact off the shelf tool and my broken tool, customer service just did a one for one swap, no issues. She just asked me to cut the zip tie off the new tool so she could use the tag with the broken tool to return.

      @@PJ-po1dk I use to work service desk at home depot, if you came in with a husky tool I'd tell you to go get the same one from the department and i would swap it out for you. You dont need a receipt or anything just the broken tool. Most of the time we carry the tool by itself, but if I had to open a case I would. Bit usually didn't need to.
      I may be bias because I worked there but I love husky tools. Also if they try to give me lip at home depot, I just tell them I worked their and I know the policy and the warranty.

    Lowe’s doesn’t own Craftsman. I’m not sure why Lowe’s has a stronger association with Craftsman than other Craftsman retailers, like Ace Hardware, but the actual owner is Stanley Black & Decker. They also own DeWALT, Porter Cable, etc.

    When Lowes was discounting Kobalt tools to make room for Craftsman they were the made in Taiwan Kobalts tools. Now I see a lot of the Kobalt tools they still stock are Made in China. Bummer! Any tool I've held that's made in Taiwan is a grade or two better quality than any China made tool. That's why Tekton is a good choice, they're mostly made in Taiwan, with even a few things made in USA on their website.

    I know this is an old video but I just had to say, to all the people saying they have a warranty and you can go back and get replacements, you shouldn't have to go behind them and do their quality control for them. You should get what you pay for and use the warranty when something goes wrong. Having a warranty is great but you shouldn't have to use it as soon as you buy your kit, everytime you buy a kit. The original poster is absolutely correct....pure BS!! And all of the posters saying it's ok because it has a warranty, is exactly the reason they can get away with it... because you allow it.
    Also, if I'm running back and forth using the warranty as quality control then I'm not making money.... Time is money, and their time isn't more important than mine....

    You aren't supposed to use Chrome sockets on impact wrenches, Impact sockets are a softer metal specifically designed to handle the "impact". Chrome sockets will crack or shatter after long term use or just a few attempts. Bad review after complaining Chrome sockets don't work with impacts I don't care what you used 25 years ago it's wrong.

  • @adamcastillo1951
    @adamcastillo1951 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Why do people complain about something cheap they buy. You get what you pay for, I'm a diesel tech and work on ag equipment so I have many brands. For one I don't use chrome sockets on impacts even if they do work. Second if I break one tool twice I buy it from somewhere else most likely it will be snap on or matco. Even then I've bought crap stuff from all companies. I'd be pissed if this happened on my snap on sockets. But like I said if I paid 65 for that set it wouldn't bother me one bit since it's a cheap set. If you got a problem with that socket that's upside down then take it back they should exchange it.

    • @fillupread
      @fillupread  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have plenty of other Husky tools (which are made by multiple different companies and supplied by different suppliers) and I have had great luck out of all that I had bought....until I ordered these. They are not available in the large sets in the stores so you have to order them. You expect the large sets to come in looking like what the smaller sets are on the shelf....but they are not. These larger sets of "husky" sockets are imported by Apex Tools of Apex NC. Sockets from the same set are from 3 different forges in China...which is why they were so different and inconsistent. The point of the video is to keep someone else from buying these "home grade" sockets when there are much better options out there.

    It happens. I was going to buy a Craftsman wrench set that's made in China from American Freight (use to be Sears). A guy posted on their website how awful they were. Noticed the workmanship right off when removing from box. Didn't even bother to try them out. Sent them back. I decided to pass. I really have no need for high end tools so Snap on, MAC and others I'm not going to buy. Just some decent tools to do some car work. But I don't want junk tools either. But don't expect quality sockets for $69.00.

Easy to warranty out, they usually always have them on the shelf, and I don’t have to wait on a tool truck. They also are extremely cost effective, and they go on sale throughout the year.

    I made a similar mistake myself when they started carrying Craftsman at Lowe's, hot garbage! The original Lowe's Stanley Craftsman sockets were the same pattern and broaching as your Husky. I gradually upgraded to brands like Proto, Williams and Wright. You can definitely feel the difference in the steel. I work as a maintenance guy at water treatment plant and I homestead. You know right away if you have junk. It will Fail! I am yet to have a Williams, Proto or Wright tool fail on me. All USA made stuff. I have been reading the comments. A lot of you are very critical and skeptical of USA made products. My question is have you actually used a "Professional " or quality USA made tool other than your father's Sears USA Craftsman or Channellock brand pliers? I am here to tell you nay sayers once you handle and work with an American made Professional tool you'll Never go back. I'm not bashing all Foreign made tools. Knipex makes sweet pliers. Wiha and Wera make damn good screwdrivers! If you are a Harry Homeowner, shade tree mechanic or hobbyists, brands like Tekton, Gearwrench, Craftsman V series and Icon will also get the job done, I consider those brands entry level equal to the old Sears USA Craftsman

  • @n8ram413
    @n8ram413 ปีที่แล้ว

    This is infuriating. I bought one of the larger husky mechanic sets a few years ago and admittedly I don’t do a whole lot of mechanic work so I have only used it a few times (and shamefully, I don’t think I ever inspected these tools too carefully). I actually used to mechanic a lot with my grandfather but I guess I never had much trouble with tools probably since all his tools were ancient. Lol. This video got me curious so I took a look through the husky sockets I own but haven’t used very much and there are at least a few with these chrome issues. The taper where the socket enters is also too deep on most of the larger sockets. Extremely disappointed. I guess it may not be an issue since I barely use these tools anyway but I guess I will probably get a nasty surprise when I finally get a little carried away with the right socket. Probably not going to buy Husky sockets again. I guess some people might think that chrome is really an aesthetic issue but it’s a sign of bad quality control. And if they weren’t too concerned about obvious things like chrome, then what other qualities of their products did they neglect? I hope the steel is actually hardened.
