As a singer you could hear the respect Patti Labelle has for Aretha in how she sung the song. It was beautiful. There were parts I thought she was going to go other places, but she showed much respect and love. You could also tell she really practiced, which I've never felt that before from her. I'm not trying to tear down Aretha! I want to acknowledge that first they are two different artists and they convey two different types of emotions in their voices. Aretha is unmatched with conveying genuine sorrow and deep conviction in her notes and Patti is just an insanely vocally talented artists with a chest voice that literally doesn't need a mic in a stadium filled with thousands of people. And I swear this is not an effort to pick one over because I legitimately don't want to do that. I know they're both so great and if I'm honest I prefer Aretha's voice. But what I will say is Patti vocally did Aretha in this song. I am drunk perhaps I'll feel differently about it tomorrow but in watching this performance after hearing that Aretha herself ask Patti to perform this number and her tribute Patti's vocal range assassinated the song and that's not a surprise. Frankly it's more of a surprise that Aretha would even ask her to given her legendary pride and knowing her vocal range but I digress
