I knew you were a Canadian boy when I fell in love with this channel! By now, I assume it's safe to say Congratulations is in order! Enjoy your precious babies while they're little, because before you know it they'll be 22 and moving 6000kms away. Love your work, from smack dab in the middle of nowhere, Nova Scotia!
I love watching a "real person" doing a video. By that I mean, what you see is what you get, and no embellishment for the sake of flash. You show all the processes, not just the highlights. The fact that you are an immensely talented and creative wood artist is a major reason to keep watching your videos. Keep doing what you are doing, and I think your channel will go far.
I love the attention to detail even though you don't have the biggest, most expensive tools in the shop. (Or a drum sander) If most people just watched the last 3 minutes of the video or saw photos of the finished product, they would think you're using bigger and more expensive equipment than you are. Well deserved thumbs up.
I so glad that I stumbled across your creative channel! As a fellow Canadian (and BC expat) I am happy to support you on your TH-cam adventure! As I wind down my first responder/military career I look forward to ramping up my woodwork game. Your amazing woodwork process is something I hope to one day be able to achieve! You have taken my mind out of the dark past and opened my eyes to a happy and challenging new world to focus my mind on. Thank you!
Thanks for not joining the clickbait and craziness bandwagon. I neither appreciate nor respect that kind of thing and am always glad to subscribe to channels who hold themselves to higher standards.
That's absolutely beautiful! Good choice in doing this full time. I TOTALLY loved those cutting boards with the purple. I love the pictues you find within... like how cloyds sometimes look like things. You are such a talented artist. AND... Congratulations on the baby.
I’m so glad I found your channel. I’m a 20 year old girl who is interested in woodworking but I don’t have many resources but you gave me inspiration. Thanks 🙏 I hope you have an amazing day today!
You're just like so many of us that don't have the best tools or the right tools or even THE tool but what you do have, that is sometimes the BEST tool and something we all wish we had, is all of that room that you have! Good on you, love your board and now onto more of your vids!
Spinningly cool! Just found your channel and have been surfing through your videos. So much respect for your aesthetic sense and creativity, and your crazyamazing work ethic! I'd love to see this technique applied to other things, maybe a front door or fireplace mantel or even just a handrail on a stairway. Cheers! 😊
Found your channel randomly watching videos because I'm interesting in woodworking as a hobby (and cutting boards looks cool to do!) Finding a fellow B.C. person doing this is great! Fun videos and love your work.
I’m a metalworker by trade but I love to make everything myself weather it’s metal wood resin or any other material, I love to watch other similar minded people doing the same , I might even attempt one of your patterns as handles for the knives I make , great channel keep it up
The fact that there is no other piece like this in the world says it all...this is the 2nd time I'm tuned in n I'm blown away by your creativity...much love n respect to you...blessings to ur fam
Superb, Theresa lot of time in that with all the glue ups etc. Thanks for sharing. Love the space in your shop and the wheeled bench is great to move from machine to machine. Andy UK
allow me to say that first: MAZAL TOV! this is GOOD LUCK in Hebrew. second: this is by far one of the top three cutting board job i ever seen. well done
love the vids man...keep it up anyone who watches these dont care its long. thats what skipping is for when your looking for specific part. I watched the table video and its was crazy amazing. keep them coming
Love the design you use for this. I've watched loads of chaotic board videos and was thinking why has no one used diagonal cuts to put even more chaos in, something I wanted to try, glad to see the thought can work 👌✌️
Your process is the same as what a quilter does in piecing together that the pattern, cutting this to fit this, so that their pattern turns out the way the quilter expects it to turn out. If one row is wrong, the pattern won’t be correct. And so on and so on. I can totally understand what you are going through every day. Good luck in your chosen craft. And I keep watching🤩
feels like half that was a philosophy class and half a cutting board. woah. nice board. you should consider making a tapering jig to do that end grain bandsaw/jointer angle cut on the table saw instead. probably save a lot of time in the long run.
The nice thing about the drum sander thing is that when you eventually do get one, it's going to seem like Heaven. Take it from someone who used to flatten end-grain boards like you do. lol
I very much enjoyed your content and channel. I just subscribed. You really should consider a drum sander….especially with end grain cutting boards. I got one a couple of years ago and it was one of the best purchases I’ve made for the shop. Makes a huge difference….especially with end grain. Keep up the good work. JB from Texas.
G'day Ryan. I came here from your 3d coffee table. First video of yours I have watched. I wasn't thinking of subscribing but I got caught up in your personality. So much so that I had to actually go back to the start of the video because I had been paying attention to you, not the build. I am saying this because although I subscribe to channels because of value of content, I also, more often than not, subscribe to the value of the person. I almost said content creator but that is a little bit cold. I like your personality, openness and honesty. Don't get too big of a head. LMFAO. I don't do social media because I am not interested in celebrity or vapidity. I look for education, inspiration and relaxation. Your videos seem to fit the bill. Anyway, I wish you all the best and I am liking your creativity. Take care mate. Joel. PS. That Purpleheart is astounding. Gave me something else to look up and learn about.
I would love to have even half that shop space. My shop is 8x12 feet. I built carts for all my big machines so I can roll them outside to have room to work.☺
Very cool design. I've made some end grain cutting boards, but none with the 3D look and none with fine intricate designs like yours. Am looking forward to making some like these sometime. Just as a tip, when you're running the flat side of your board over the jointer, as soon as it passes over the out feed side, put your pressure with your push block onto that side. This way you're not angling your board. Pressure on the middle creates an angle effect on the board and then its not true flat.
Great work, and congrats on the baby. In this video you reference another video that you plan on releasing in a month, the table. I was interested in seeing it, and I did find the video, but if it's possible, I'd recommend going back into older videos like this and updating them with a link to the new video, so it's easier for people to navigate your content.
I’ve watched tones of your videos! You’re really excellent Ryan! I love your setup and the glue up table! now for a drying rack to hang your pipe clamps while the glue sets and you can get air circulation all around.
Your channel is awesome. I’d love to learn more about the jig you use for glue ups. Also what is that material you put down on the boards under the cauls? Keep up the inspiring work!
I got so distracted from your speech, even after skipping ahead twice, that I missed the beginning of the build lol, but I see you my wood working friend making it big on here in the wood working community sharing your ideas and growing the interest as a hobby for me and a hustle for your family. I’m gonna have to comeback and rewatch all over again too lol 😂 Thanks for showing us how to build your cutting board. Still so puzzling tho 🤔
Wow! It started to look like you were losing all the purpleheart, but it certainly shows in that final configuration! Amazing work (I just found your channel last night!) And you have, sir, chosen a very classy maker's mark -- the meaning suits your hopeful attitude in these weird times in which we find ourselves!
found your video through my youtube recommended and subscribed 5 minutes in! I'm not a woodworker myself (yet! maybe when i'm older/more income... too many creative hobbies and too little time as is) - but I always appreciate creativity and good design. the thumbnails and unique pieces drew me in, and it's nice to see someone chatting about their process in a thoughtful and down to earth manner. maybe i'm in the minority but i don't mind longer videos - a video should be as long as it needs to be for the project. i do appreciate that you're considerate of our time and your explanations were clear, kinda makes me curious what your previous job was... don't worry about the filmmaking, you will find your groove over time :) if I can offer some suggestions though - for your process, I would just say 1) think about subtitle placement when framing your shots and 2) when filming, focus on what actions or things to capture are relevant to the narrative of your process. i have found that very helpful when shooting with minimal planning, or when getting b-roll.
love your work. Is there a special reason you use your bandsaw to cut off the ends of the boards. I would use the track saw. Keep up de the good work. Love 2 C more of this.
Greetings from Abbotsford fellow BCer! I just discovered your channel today and I'm hooked already! You do amazing work. I love these ones! P.s. adorable doggies!!
Well, I can see that you have to use the bandsaw for some of your cuts. Bandsaws have terrible infeed and outfeed tables, okay, they don't have any. If you can figure out how to extend the tracks, you could make a sliding table for straight enough cuts so that you don't need to run them on the jointer. Some of your cutting boards are too thick to do on the table saw. I was a production bowl turner for 25 or so years. My preferred finish is walnut oil, specifically from the Doctor's Woodshop in Oregon. Walnut oil will soak in and then cure and harden. Mineral oil provides almost no protection, and is pretty much gone shortly after you apply it. The walnut oils in the store are not the same thing. Worth looking into. Always had bad results with a belt sander, too much up and down. I do like your router with a planing bit on it. I know you can do that with a radial arm saw, and get a 3 inch wide bit, maybe bigger. I would want to square the board up and chamfer the edges a bit first. The drum sander is a nice addition, but the glue messes up your abrasives, unless you use the planer bit first. I did see the one where you did the cutting board out of the white oak wine barrel staves. There were visible lines, which may have been glue lines. If you run the boards through a drum sander before you glue them up, you get a much better fit than you can get with a saw blade edge/surface. Nice work!
Really nice! Are you taking very light passes on the end grain with the jointer? And how does the purple color in the purpleheart hold up? Or does it go brownish over time? Stay safe!
Very light passes! Like 1/32". The purple will darken over time. I've yet to find a way to preserve that bright purple short of encasing it in a clear epoxy, which wouldn't really work in this application.
I really really love these cutting boards. I bet they will be super fun and entertaining to make. If I sell cutting boards like this people, or my friends or family members I bet they would really love these type of art cutting boards, and I would definitely make a lot of money if I sell a ton of them. 🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩
Outstanding, especially given the short time you have apparently been woodworking. Love the vibe. I did notice that you are occasionally without respiratory protection. I couldn't tell what kind of mask you were using when you did have one on. As a physician (and woodworker) whose full-time regular job is occupational lung disease, I would recommend a P100 mask at all times whilst in the shop, irrespective of good dust extraction. An excellent, very comfortable model is the Miller LRP-100 half mask which you can get from most welding supply companies on-line. Strong work!
Appreciate the reminder on safety. I’m typically pretty good with the protection but sometimes fail to take the few seconds to throw on a mask for a few cuts. It’s those few seconds that could come back to haunt me later on in life. The masks I do have are N95, but I’ll be checking out the one you recommended. Thanks for watching!
@@ryanhawkins Cool. Yes, if you look up the specs for N95 - most of which are relatively uncomfortable and poorly fitting vs. the Miller - you will find that they filter around 90-95% of particles 0.3 micron in diameter optimally, and often much less when not worn properly. KN 95 is worse. Shop dust particles generally range in size from 1 - 100 microns so this may sound pretty good except their number is enormous, so you still inhale significant amounts when 1 out of every 20 or 25 gets thru the mask. The P100 is 99.5% plus and the fit is awesome. I frequently wear mine 8 hours or more per day, and find it quite comfortable. I adopted the discipline after 25+ years in the shop and now regret it. It sounds like you have many years to go, and, trust me, you don't want to get pulmonary fibrosis.
Howdy, I always enjoy your work! Question. I have a DEWALT planner like your old one that broke. I always seem to get a little cupping at the ends even though I’ve made a longer table for the wood to ride on. Any ideas? I was wondering if my tension rollers are bad???
It’s called snipe and happens on all planners, it’s why you see ppl feed boards in one after another right behind the board in front of it, that way you only get a little snipe on the first board and potentially at the end of the last one. It can be hard to keep up with if the boards are short, helps to have 2 people - one feeding and one catching them as they come out
its a exotic species called Purple Heart. It is from south america, if you're looking to grab yourself one, your local hardwood store should have some :D
Great job again! Subbed with your first video. Do you throw away your roller after the glue up? Ive seen people keep it in water but wouldn't that water down the glue on the next board!
Thanks so much for following along from the very beginning! I clean my roller with soap and water after glue up and let it air dry before using again. I agree that keeping it in water between glue ups would absolutely water down the glue. Not sure I can recommend that storage method.
I'm loving the content. It gets me so inspired and I learn bits and pieces from every video. I hope that I can get my own workshop going in a year or two, and that I some day can make boards half as beautiful as yours. I wish you all the best for the future, and I'm looking forward to coming along for the ride here and on Instagram :)
Great channel bud, awesome content. Out of curiosity how much do you sell those cutting boards for? And do you have a website where one can shop around what you build? Thanks.
I love your work. Long videos? I can think of a lot worse ways to spend 30 minutes! I am also an avid wood worker and I enjoy seeing your techniques and how you make these patterns. thank you for sharing. I also build guitar amplifiers and I am imagining an amp cabinet with that brick pattern. That is going to be beyond cool. I just have to do it. Thank you for causing me work!! LOL.

2 thumbs up for not being yet another clickbait video. Absolutely love your videos and find it enjoyable to watch and learn!

I so appreciate this feedback!
Great job.... The sacrifice board while doing the finger grooves made this vid worth it alone.... I NEVER thought of that. Thanks
Glad it helped!

Thank you from a Canadian to a fellow Canadian . I just love woodworking, endless to your imagination 💭
Cool boards. The purple heart really makes it pop. Thanks

Nice to see someone from home. Your space is HUGE (I’ve the opposite problem, all the tools, no room).
Found your channel randomly watching videos because I'm interesting in woodworking as a hobby (and cutting boards looks cool to do!)
Finding a fellow B.C. person doing this is great! Fun videos and love your work.
Thanks for watching neighbour!
AWESOME JOB RYAN!!!! Thank you so very much for your help!!

Thanks and right back at you!
WoW! Super cool, and beautiful! I had no idea so many different types of wood were food safe!
It's not a cutting board. It's a Master piece.
Awesomeness. A big table would be great, but seriously a rolling clamp rack. That would be a great help. Keep up the great work 👍 👏 💪
Thanks for watching Kevin!
Ridiculously time consuming . . . and worth every damn minute. Outstanding. Fan-freaking-tastic!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Man, I appreciate you! I'm back on my grind. More vids coming up!
Love the design you use for this. I've watched loads of chaotic board videos and was thinking why has no one used diagonal cuts to put even more chaos in, something I wanted to try, glad to see the thought can work 👌✌️

I appreciate that!

The nice thing about the drum sander thing is that when you eventually do get one, it's going to seem like Heaven. Take it from someone who used to flatten end-grain boards like you do. lol
I so hear that. The novelty will not wear off soon.
На мой взгляд это хоть и не сложная работа ,но самая выразительная и шедевральная! От души поздравляю ! Привет из России !
Good job Ryan, thanks for sharing.
Glad to see your name in here, Martin. Thanks for watching :)
That cutting board is so pretty I wouldn't want to use it for fear of ruining it!
WOW!!! Thank you for sharing your creativity!!!!!❤
Great work keep it up! I just made my 3rd end grain cutting board over the weekend
Nice! It becomes an addicting hobby real quick.
Seriously, WTF is up with thumbs down? I mean, jealousy??? DAMN, this is some good stuff!
I love your work and I can’t tell you how jealous I am of the space you have to create in. Great job on the video.
Cheers from Toronto
Thanks for watching!

Ok. You earned my sub with this one. Beautiful work! Best wishes on becoming a family man.
Appreciate the sub, Dave!
I would love to have even half that shop space. My shop is 8x12 feet. I built carts for all my big machines so I can roll them outside to have room to work.☺
Amazing cutting board and congratulations on your 1st 👶
Thank you!
This board is WILD!!! I love it! The one with the juice grove must be up in the $500 range? Keep up the good work, you've earned my subscription!
$560 to be exact. Thanks so much for watching!
You did a wonderful job, I was very impressed.

Keep up the inspiring work!
Ridiculously beautiful! :D
Great stuff Ryan. Can you do a video or explain in your next one about your little glue up rig there with the pipe on top of the lumber
Love your content! Can't wait to see you up amongst all the other woodworking "all-stars".

Super nice cutting board amazing amount of hours and money you have invested in it
It was a fun build for sure!
I really love your videos and the results are incredible

Holy crap I'm excited to see the table build video.
It was a wild build, can’t wait to get it out there.
Happy with the TH-cam suggestion: good content also to the point commentary. The music, less so.
Great video, congrats on the family. I did share and like on my Facebook page
Thanks!

Hello from the East coast in Nova Scotia. I like the unpolished stuff. less time spent polishing and more time making saw dust.
Duly noted.😉
Excellent!! Nice work!
Priceless masterpiece 👍
You are a artist
It's nice that you've some three guitars and two amps in the background ...! ;)
The board is awesome!
Love watching yer videos keep up the awesome work!! Ya keep inspiring me to make a cutting board of my own I've always wanted to!!

I really really love these cutting boards. I bet they will be super fun and entertaining to make. If I sell cutting boards like this people, or my friends or family members I bet they would really love these type of art cutting boards, and I would definitely make a lot of money if I sell a ton of them. 🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩
I’m jealous of all your stash.
Awesome work, very dedicated, bought the plans from MTM, just haven’t tried yet , thanks for the inspiration.
Another excellent video top job mate ignore the negative comments
Howdy, I always enjoy your work! Question. I have a DEWALT planner like your old one that broke. I always seem to get a little cupping at the ends even though I’ve made a longer table for the wood to ride on. Any ideas? I was wondering if my tension rollers are bad???
It’s called snipe and happens on all planners, it’s why you see ppl feed boards in one after another right behind the board in front of it, that way you only get a little snipe on the first board and potentially at the end of the last one.
It can be hard to keep up with if the boards are short, helps to have 2 people - one feeding and one catching them as they come out
What kind of wood is the purple stuff?
its a exotic species called Purple Heart.
Думала он никогда не остановится , так и будет клеить- пилить, клеить- пилить... Сколько времени человек убил на эти эксклюзивные доски?
I'm loving the content. It gets me so inspired and I learn bits and pieces from every video. I hope that I can get my own workshop going in a year or two, and that I some day can make boards half as beautiful as yours. I wish you all the best for the future, and I'm looking forward to coming along for the ride here and on Instagram :)
I really appreciate you following along and all the help with the algorithm. 👊
You are amazing, love your channel, thank you
Great channel bud, awesome content. Out of curiosity how much do you sell those cutting boards for? And do you have a website where one can shop around what you build? Thanks.
You can check out my shop here: www.westcoastboards.ca/shop-1
Super work
I love your work. LOL.
