Fun fact is that part of the reason they started editing out his smocking habits was because it was also becoming quite public knowledge that smoking was bad for your health. Smocking was going out of fashion.

Bravo for reacting to The Reluctant Dragon! This was actually around a fair amount in my childhood long ago! They showed it once in my elementary school as a special Friday-afternoon treat, and it was aired on Walt Disney's Sunday-evening TV series (undoubtedly in shortened form). I"m very grateful that you stepped out of the Classics list for this! You should probably skip Victory Through Air Power, though. :)
I think certain departments were all-women because they were considered to be good on picky little details. Men had minds that were, you know, above all that....

I just checked to see if Victory Through AirPower was on D+ because I’ve actually never seen it!! But from what I’ve heard… you’re probably right! 😂
Love hearing the reasoning behind the all female departments… I’m guessing that wouldn’t fly today 😂

Disney actually did do something similar for his television series - about the making of a documentary in his True-Life Adventure series involving a squirrel named "Perri". The thing that impressed me about it was that he actually explained some of the logic of putting a story together.

Ooh how interesting! I’ve not actually seen any of the true life adventures and only really know of them because of the whole lemmings fiasco.

I can't believe you did The Reluctant Dragon! Fantastic! I love that you got to go behind the scenes on all the magic💖 Btw the wife wasn't just being lazy when she said she was choosing to go shopping instead-- she was forcing her lazy husband to be ambitious. Ah the struggles of a middle-aged wife in the 40's lol Oh and Walt and his team were the first major company to hire women to train women to do these skills such as animating, sound effects, and chemistry in order to make the ink and paints. They were still brand new to the work world because of WWII and in school they weren't trained for careers other than nurturing, teaching, and possibly nursing if they wanted to be trained for it. Oh and I know, I was upset about Timothy Q. Mouse but then I realized that Dumbo was still in production so knowing Walt, he didn't want to give away the details yet. And fun fact: Sir Giles' voice is the same as Ratty in The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad.

Yh, putting your mind into the context of when the films of this era came out is so important. Although I have to say, my world history is not as good as my Disney history, so thankyou for the extra knowledge on the 1940s housewife!! 😂

I remember reading in Jerry Beck's _The Animated Movie Guide,_ that besides it being an inaccurate depiction of the atmosphere at the time, some of the supposed "employees" shown in the film actually were just actors who never worked a single day in the studio.
The Baby Weems short looks like it would have been good if released, but unfortunately a thing that drags it down is some of the world leaders being blatant racist caricatures, with the Haze Codes not helping. And with those Haze Codes, serously, (like seriously, do they think kids are going to go crazy and kill each other if they see one's bellybutton? And also, they wouldn't allow "white slavery" but had no problem showing black slaves?

@@EdizAndBen it was definitely a very interesting film, sort of made me think of saving mr banks, part of it being set at the disney studios but it was cool ot features walt disnry himself! I'll admit I found the film a little strange because it wasn't really like other disney movies I've seen-even fantasia which is moree music wasn't much like this-but I found it quite cool! I always thought this film was entirely animated before watching the movie so it was super interesting to see! I think i agree with ediz and u about the animation, u can sort of tell the film had a tigher budget, bit the dragon os a cool character imo! I do appreciate the fact that it gave sneak peeks to upcoming fil s tho i agree on a whole ot wasnt that great but certainly interesting nevertheless!! And I love all the facts Ben! That's why Disney is not smoking in Saving Mr Banks. If Tom Hanks lit and smoked a cigarette on screen, it would
have turned into a R-rated movie. But Disney's smoking habit is portrayed in the film though. You see him holding a cigarette, putting out the ashes, coughing, etc.

Second, The Reluctant Dragon is definitely underrated but probably for a reason 🤭😆 I’m glad it has one of those warnings at the beginning before it plays if you watch it on Disney+. But I’m Ben’s side when it comes why Walt Disney is iconic for who he was not matter through all the controversial stuff. He definitely stayed true to the very end. Plus, I think Walt was one of the reasons why I never wanted to get into smoking 🥲🥺
Can’t wait to watch your guy’s start of the silver age cause Saludos Amigos has some iconic moments from that moment.
