    Verte Anaconda was strong for three reasons. It's summoning condition is very easy to meet, requiring only two effect monsters (which virtually every deck can manage). It's able to turbo out Destroyer Phoenix Enforcer easily. DPE destroys one card you control and your opponent controls, and is able to revive itself after being destroyed the next turn, basically giving you a free card pop every turn. Verte sends the fusion spell Destiny Fusion to make DPE, making it so you do not have to draw the fusion spell or act under the fusion spell's restriction of being unable to special summon monsters other than HEROs after its use.

      Then there's dragoon, that has an omni negate and can destroy one monster your opponent controls and and deal equal to the the original attack. With how easy to get verte anaconda to the board, you can send red eyes fusion to immediately summon him.

    • @YukiFubuki.
      @YukiFubuki. ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@TheBulkheadwhat makes DPE so much more scarier is that its effect to destroy other cards is a quick effect as in it can use its effect in response to almost anything else essentially meaning 2 attempt is necessary to get rid of it for it to be successful since it can easily dodge the first attempt while taking something of the opponents with it
      even its own revival effect has a layer of nuance to it in that when it does revive itself it does so without starting a chain because mechanic-wise the way it works is that it activates its effect to queue its revival the next turn when its destroyed but this effect does absolutely nothing on the spot and because it does absolutely nothing it limits what cards can even possibly be activated in response to counter it because its not like you use something in response to an ability that does nothing then next turn only right after the turn player draws for turn does it revive itself but its not activating its effect’s again, its simply resolving a previously already activated effect so it does not start a chain meaning when it happens it just happens without giving a chance for the opponent to respond to it
      the card is by no means some invincible wall or overbearing juggernaut but its nature as infinite suicide bomber that resurrects near instantly means the longer its not dealt with faster the opposing player will be made more and more disadvantageous in card resource since DPE can trade them card for card each and every turn

    Important thing to note about Yugioh and why it developed in the way it did:
    Kazuki Takahashi (RIP) was primarily a writer and manga artist, not a game designer. He made certain cards because they helped with the pace and excitement of the duels in his story, not because they were balanced or fun to play. Cards like Pot of Greed, Graceful Charity, Card of Demise, and Card of Sanctity exist purely so that his characters wouldn't run out of cards to play during a game. But these cards, with those effects from the story, would all be absurdly broken and absolutely destroy the game's balance. In fact, some of them did. In early OCG, Exodia was essentially a Tier 0 deck because everybody could play 3 Pot of Greed and 3 Graceful Charity and 3 Swords of Revealing Light. And there weren't enough defensive cards to stop that from happening.
    This doesn't really happen anymore. Cards nowadays (presumably) go through a more intricate R&D process, but the intent of the original design still sort of creeps into the modern game regardless because Yugioh doesn't use standard rotation, and all cards ever printed are legal unless they are banned.

    Funfact: The idea of Ash Blossom being recurred in a control deck is actually something that had happened.
    Salamangreat was once a top competitive control deck in Yu-Gi-Oh that allowed you to recur Ash Blossom, since it is a FIRE Attribute monster, via the effect of Sunlight Wolf.
    The entire deck revolved around a constantly repeating 2-card combo that lead to 2 interruptions, constant resources, and some protection.

    • @TheBulkhead
      @TheBulkhead  ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Very cool. How did it win?

    • @NytoDork
      @NytoDork ปีที่แล้ว +17

      @@TheBulkhead The Salamangreat deck won by negating important combo pieces. Most combos of the deck lead to a card that will negate one card of the opponent. Most YGO decks at that time simply lost when a single important card is negated.
      What made Salamangreat so good was the fact that it can constantly repeat the lines of play that lead to a negation. So if you didn't deal with it the first time properly, you had to do it again the next turn, this time most likely without your most important card.
      The deck was hit by the banlist to reduce the consistency, but it's no longer a real threat as decks are able to break Salamangreat boards. And once the board is fully broken, Salamangreat struggles greatly with recovery, especially if you set up your own interruptions.

    • @TheBulkhead
      @TheBulkhead  ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@NytoDork When you say YGO decks fold to one piece of interaction, is it because their game plan falls apart and they deck themselves eventually? Sounds like a very combo heavy meta.

    • @NytoDork
      @NytoDork ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@TheBulkhead The majority of decks has been capable of ending games within less than 3 turns for a while now (by reducing the life to 0).
      If you lose out the momentum of a single turn, that can be the end of the game.
      Salamangreat at its peak was capable of stopping the momentum of a deck every turn rather consistently.
      Also, because YGO doesn't have a mana system, everything revolves around combos of varying lengths and complexities.
      Outside of extreme stall cases, every deck plays some kind of combo in order to gain an advantage.
      So being able to accurately stop the combo at the chokepoint is key. And being able to do so for multiple turns, safely and consistently, was what made Salamangreat amazing.

    It's funny how cards specifically created for the anime/manga either end up being incredibly overpowered, or having hyper-specific effects that are very impractical.
    For example, Pot of Greed (I believe?) was originally created by Kazuki Takahashi to solve a problem where characters were running out of cards in the hand, making the later parts of a duel harder to write. Turns out that the card ended up being inherent overpowered and was later banned, but there's been tons of "retrains" of Pot of Greed that have costs or stipulations attatched.
    And Relay Soul, I believe, is another one of those cards created specifically for the anime, to increase the tension of a certain duel. I feel like it was just printed out of obligation LOL.

    Figured I might as well cover Verte Anaconda, since it's an interesting one. At first glance it seems like an interesting piece of Predaplant support, allowing you to pay 2000LP a "Fusion" or "Polymerization" spell from deck to graveyard, in order to copy that spell's effect. The _intended_ target for this was likely "Super Polymerization," which synergizes with Verte's ability to make an opponent's monster DARK-attribute for the turn - then, you could send Super Poly from deck to grave in order to fuse Verte with that opponent's monster.
    The problem, though, is that Verte can send ANY normal or quick-play spell that has "Fusion/Polymerization" in the name in order to copy its effect. This includes a few archetypal fusion spells that allow you to fuse _using monsters in your deck._ Add on the fact that Verte was incredibly easy to summon (2 effect monsters means basically any deck could play it), and Verte became a part of various "engines" where it was used to summon an extremely powerful fusion monster. You didn't even need to DRAW any of the cards used in this engine to summon these!
    In particular, there were 3 extremely powerful monsters of note. Practically ANY deck could summon these thanks to Verte, as you simply needed to include the spell, and the 2 materials:
    -Rainbow Neos (Elemental HERO Neos + Rainbow Dragon + Neos Fusion)
    -Red-Eyes Dark Dragoon (Dark Magician + Red-Eyes Black Dragon + Red-Eyes Fusion)
    -Destiny HERO - Destroyer Phoenix Enforcer (1 "Destiny HERO" monster + 1 Level 6 or HIgher "HERO" monster + Fusion Destiny)

      6 months late, but I used Verte anaconda in my cyber dragon OTK deck in master duel to cast overload fusion, which actually banishes monsters from your graveyard as material... and it summons rampage dragon, which can blow up spells/traps on the field up to the amount of monsters banished, and can also attack 3 times per turn if you send monsters from your deck to the graveyard
      Edit:meaning you can summon 2 effect monsters, use them to link Verte anaconda, then use those same monsters as material to summon rampage dragon

    Broken Bamboo Sword is an FTK enabler, producing combos that make it so your opponent loses before ever getting a turn. The only reason things like that currently don't see play is because Ash Blossom is staple.
    Solemn Judgment is NOT a quickplay Trap, there is no such thing as a quickplay Trap. It is a "Counter Trap", and how Counter Traps work is that they are "spell speed 3", which means anything that isn't a Counter Trap cannot respond to the activation of it, so only counter Traps can respond to counter Traps.

    to explain it in the most mtg way possible:
    Verte anaconda, 2/1
    -cost 2 lands, but you can also sacrifice 2 monsters as long as it's not vanilla or tokens (so even a monster that only has lifesteal or first-strike in its text also counts).
    -it's from the extra deck, similar to commander, it is always accessible, but it is not re-occurring and will stay in the graveyard if it is killed
    -effect: send from the deck/library to the graveyard 1 non-monster spell (instant or not doesn't matter) that summons a monster from the deck, this monster effect becomes that sent spell
    -if the non-monster spell effects to be activated require sacrifice/discard or lands to be tapped, you send said cards or land from the deck to the graveyard instead to fulfill its condition, causing your monsters, enchantment, and lands on the field untouched
    -so since it can target 'ANY' spells, you can just choose the spell that summons the biggest monster with all its unkillable and overpower shenanigans without having to set up lands to pay its mana cost or anything, although you will be sending lots of cards and/or land to the graveyard (6+ cards/lands in mtg maybe?), MTG Definitely has ways to get them back or just send cards that are fine being discarded to the graveyard.

    With Bamboo Sword it's used primarily in OTK decks, as part of it's own draw engine, while being fuel for another draw engine.
    It's played at 1 copy alongside a better Bamboo equip card at 3 copies, and golden bamboo sword at 3 copies. There's also a new one that facilitates the engine so if you play that at 3, it takes up about a 4th of your deck, making it very consistent wit all the draw power.
    Also taking up 1 of your Spell/Trap Zones is hardly relevant in the majority of decks as most commonly used Spells, and Traps don't stick around after their effect resolves. The only exception is with Stall/Control Decks, Pendulum Decks(which basically only get 3 Spell Trap Zones due to theur core mechanic), and the few Decks that are based on specific Archetypes(Archetype being like a family of cards like Dark Magician, Skull Servant, etc that all revolve 1 card or a group of cards) that heavily fill the Spell/Trap Zones.

    There are also cards that sound really good on paper but are just ok or plain awful in Practice.
    Here are some examples :
    Blue Eyes Chaos MAX Dragon : This is a Level 8 Ritual Monster with 4000 Attack and 0 Defense that can be special summoned with Chaos Form. It cannot be targeted by nor be destroyed by your opponents card effects. It also deals double piercing damage ( piercing means your opponent still takes damage if the attacked monster was in defense position and Chaos MAX doubles the damage ). What makes this card so mediocre is that it is 1. despite it's protection vulnerable to alot of other forms of removal ( like non targeting banishing or just sending it to the GY without destroying it ) and 2. its another Brick if you have no Ritual Spell or way to search said Ritual Spell. There are much better, less bricky cards Blue Eyes can run that offer more than just a big Beatstick.
    Ursarctic Radiation : This is a continuous Spell that places 7 Counters on itself when you activate it. Everytime you special summon an Ursarctic Monster from the Hand or Extra Deck you can remove one counter from it to draw a card. It also lets you shuffle one Ursarctic from the GY back into the Deck once per turn. On Paper this card sound broken since it lets you go Plus 7 in Card Advantage just for playing and even recycle Urarctics for Future use. The Problem is the fact that it is tied to Ursarctics one of the worst archetypes in the game, which chews to much cards for mediocre plays that you are lucky to get go neutral in card advantage. This is a rather memed card since it would broken in 90% of other Archetypes , but is still awful to being an Ursarctic Card.

    well, this was an amusing watch. I know everyone else explained it by now, but im having a night so ill explain Verte.
    Verte is a general fusion support card that lets you send a number of the fusion cards directly from the deck to the graveyard to then resolve the fusion summoning as normal. the reason the DPE play was so good is because the card verte would send to summon DPE is a fusion that draws materials from the deck, so BAM, summon a boss fusion monster right off of this thing. and it's a good one. notably, it could destroy any card on your field to do the same to the opponents, including itself. the trick is it would revive itself each time it was destroyed in a manner like that, so you could infinitely bring it back. where it got crazier was in a set up called "scythe lock" whereby you'd also set a monster to the magic/trap zone called Artifact Scythe (Artifacts all can do that as their gimmick) if Scythe got destroyed back there then it would summon itself, and then lock out the opponent from doing anything from the extra deck for that turn. that meant no extra deck summons at all (Fusion/synchro/exceed/link) and you could easily make that happen with DPE, shutting down most decks tempo wise enough to make up the difference if you set it up.

    Really should have put Maxx C after exposing them to couple cards that are good for their special summon effects.

    If you do a video like this in the future, I'd do a bit more research. They're were some things you started that were not correct. Ex. Maxx C is banned in the TCG, raigeki is at 3, and there are no quick play traps. Also let them come to a conclusion before you give the answer after the 3rd one you were giving the answers before they had clearly decided

    Gawd the creator doesn’t even know 2 sacs are lv 7+ and 3 sac rule was removed so irrelevant but it was 9+. And broken bamboo sword is part of many MANY ftks which makes it good in any format where ancient fairy dragon and other support comes back, literal 90%+ consistency ftk if no ash

      It sounds like Matt mostly had knowledge from the online game Master Duel. It's legal at 3 because that platform has a banlist closer to the East Asia OCG format, but the content pool is behind releases in both regions so it gets to be its own format. Maxx "C" has been banned in the main TCG format for years but it's stayed at 3 in the OCG, so it was a bit of a culture shock when TCG region players tried Master Duel. Oddly enough though, it debuted in the TCG first. (both regions have separate balancing committees and R&D for stuff that debuts first in one place vs the other)

      @@HaxDotCombo Matt definitely jumped back into YGO when Master Duel came out, especially since the whole Magic community was like, "why isn't Arena like this?!" So it makes sense that he woulda made that mistake. So are there multiple formats in YGO and then different banlists for specific formats as well?

    • @HaxDotCombo
      @HaxDotCombo ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheBulkheadThe banlists are mainly split by region/platform, any other sanctioned ways of playing the game are either very-temporary events or complete game-mode swaps like how Commander uses different rules from 60 card Magic. Instead of maintaining more than one banlist based on power levels and format philosophies there's basically only the one regular constructed format per region/platform. In paper, alternate format events are usually just people playing past historic lists.

    Pot of greed is banned in all format wrong: Not banned in Traditional format(this does not mean play by old rulling it simply mean everything that is banned is limited to one copy in your deck for every card that is banned. Pot of greed is allow in goat format ( this is play by the old rulling and the banned list of that time, pot of greed and gracefully charity was not banned at this time) Unlimited format ( does not mean play by the old ruling and neither meant play by the other older rulling) This mean banned card, limited card, and semi lemitited card are allowed 3 copy in your deck meaning no limitation only card mark not allowed to be used in a duel is the only one banned in unlimited format. Booster pack rules will allow more then 3 copy of any card, and in booster pack rules if you get a card that says cannot be used in a duel, you can used it in booster pack rules even more then 3 copy.
