I climb these for a living.. spend $30 on some seat belt material and $20 each on some wide mouth/gate climbing rated carabiners (2 each) and make swiss seats and your own lanyards at the very least.. its way too easy not to have some excuse of safety gear. hell even cheap cable grabs are only like $40 if you start climbing radio towers that have a cable running up the ladder. *(Edit* the "rigid track" is not the same thing as a cable grab system for a radio tower, they employ different systems which i briefly discuss ahead but I ultimately suggest that you you have SOMETHING that provides a way to take rests and prevent falls.. I've used the rigid track systems on 300-400ft towers and they get hung up so much that they're hell.. they're supposed to make life easy not having to click in and out, but they hang up so often and have NO way to remove except form the top/bottom meaning if you're halfway up you're forced to keep using it so you can remove it, so I just stick to using two wide mouth carabiners (lanyards) and click in and out every few rungs at a time so you're always attached and take care to observe what is known as a "fall factor" basically if your safety system is 6ft long, only make it so about half the length can take the fall and never make it longer than your height otherwise it can break far easier than you'd expect from what we call "shock loads" and this is not a general truth depending on the material YOUR ROPE is made from, hence suggesting a material with what we call a safety factor that's generally speaking gonna be okay, typically you want 10:1 safety ratio so if you weigh 200lb, the ropes work load limit should be at least 2,000lb, and really you want 5,000lb hence use seatbelt material.. otherwise that 6ft lanyard connect at your feet will mean you fall 6ft before it's eye level, and another 6 ft before it catches you.. that 12 ft fall can generate 2000-3000 lbs of shock forces that will snap an ordinary rope. and not all ropes are equal. Static = rope isn't stretchy so it doesn't absorb energy and thus the entire shock load hits at once and dynamic = it stretches 8-20% which can save your life in a nasty 2 factor fall as described above. but this is all educational and not actually intended to be used.. you can die*)* In that spire it looks like a rigid track and they are NO FUN to climb with the safety and we always end up rigging straps to hold the safety in the right orientation or they lock up a TON.
