Great video! A question from a Mandarin student here. At 1:08, we see a classical past negation with 没 - 我们没买衣服 (we didn’t buy clothes). All’s clear here. But in the next sentence, we see 中午我们不想回家吃饭 (at noon, we didn’t want to go back home and cook). My question is: why are we not using 没想 but 不想 to express a past negation here - is it because of the 中午 at the beginning of the sentence (which serves as an indicator of a past situation), or maybe the verb 想 just isn’t used with 没 in general?
Thanks a lot for your question! It is because in Chinese it is not possible to say 没想 alone with the meaning “don’t want to”, so the negation in this case is always with 不想. It does not change whether we are talking about a present situation (今天我不想学习), a past situation (昨天我不想学习) or a future situation (明天我不想学习). A different case is the usage in the collocations 没想到 (我没想到你的中文那么好 “I didn’t expect your Chinese to be so good”) or 没想过 (我没想过你会离开我 “I didn’t think you would leave me”).
