You guys are cracking me up talking about how unsafe it feels. My first car was a 1947 CJ2A. No roll bar no seat belts, wheeled it every weekend and drove it as fast as it would possibly go. Too funny, great video though. More people should see this stuff. My father was a 3 war veteran WWii, Korea and Vietnam. I love the military history. If you get a chance, check out the Patton museum in Fort Knox Kentucky.

I have a 1948 Willys CJ2-A restored since 1996 , I am 6'4" and have no problems at all driving the jeep , but the guys with the big guts , have trouble fitting behind the wheel !! I am the 3rd owner , bought it in 1995 from the 2nd owner.
the second owner George Bartosh bought it in 1956 from the original owner. as teenagers we would go down to George's Mobil station in Berwyn Pennsylvania and haggle with him to try and buy the jeep & a 1948 Dodge power wagon tow truck .
George would always run us out of there stating those vehicles are garage kept & cared for !! I sell them to you kid's you'll take them out in the woods & beat the crap out of them !!!! The answer is " NO " now git on out of here , I got work to do !!!!
20 years passes by, a cold snowy Sunday, taking the wife & kids to the King of Prussia mall , had to pass the old Mobil station,
it was now closed & rented out to a Enterprise car rental. But , George & family lived back behind it up the lane. I knocked on the door , & talked to George , both vehicles were still there, & as good a shape as I remember as a teenager !!
I made a deal with him on the spot , and promised to give them both a good home !!
9 months later, I had the JEEP completely restored to like new condition , I contacted " George " in hopes of taking it down to show him , his wife answered the phone & I explained my reason for the phone call , " sadly " she informed me that George
passed away 3 months ago. She did say however that she knew that George would of been very happy to hear that.
Today I have relocated to the Daytona Beach area, from Pennsylvania and I take the red 48 Willys to New Smyrna Beach on
occasion , as we are aloud to " drive " on the beach down here ! after all these years , these old JEEPS still get a lot of attention by young & old !!!
THIS STORY IS DEDICATED TO THE MEMORY OF " GEORGE BARTOSH " WHO FAITHFULLY & LOVINGLY TOOK CARE OF " 2 " AMERICAN ICONS & PRESERVED A PIECE OF HISTORY FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS .
THANKS GEORGE COULDN'T OF DONE IT WITHOUT YA !!! Paul

So I joined the Army national guard when I was 17. We all had HMVVs at this time but we travelled to an Army base for my first weekend drill and had to use borrowed equipment there. We got in at night and my platoon sergeant pointed at a vehicle and told me to drive him. It was a Jeep exactly like the one you drove in this video. I couldn’t believe the thing was still in service, and I had never driven a stick shift before in my life. After about a mile and much cursing from the SFC platoon sergeant, I figured it out pretty quick! Memories….

You guys driving that Jeep reminded me of a 1940s Willis Jeep that was converted to a fire vehicle. It was a civil defense Jeep used in WWII. It was fun to drive; however, with the water weight you did NOT want to go much over 40 MPH! It could go many places off road and did really well fighting brush fires.

What I've learned working in a military museum is that when the three companies submitted their prototypes to the War Dept. they like certain things of each one, but didn't like other bits and pieces of each one as well, so they decided to put out their "wish list" and for reasons that I don't know Willys got the contract (more than likely, they were the lowest bidder). Willys was a very small company and could not meet the demand of the hundreds of thousands vehicles requested, so they came up with a plan: They also contracted Ford and Bantam to make the parts that the War Dept. wanted from each company, plus Ford and Willys would split the manufacturing of all the tubs, engines, and suspension parts, so that way Willys would only have to make about half of the demand, Ford would make the other half; Ford jeeps' were called GPW and Willys's were called MB. That way Ford and Bantam would also get a piece of the pie. Win-Win for everyone at home, so we can Win-Win (Europe-Japan) overseas as well!!!
It's been argued by some that the word "Jeep" came from what the Soldiers informally called the Ford GPW... "Hey, get the GeeP ready to go!" But Willys would never accept that theory...
Great episode, you guys. Full of history and pride.

    • @bennmustang1
      @bennmustang1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Little more history for you. Looks like they frankensteined all three to make the final version. If you look at the side profile it more closely resembles Ford with the flat sides vs Bantam and Willies. Ford went so far as to stamp F into their bolts to differentiate their higher level of quality over bantam and willies cheap low quality stuff. Maybe even the first easter eggs belonged to Ford since they were forbidden to mark Ford on their parts but they did it anyway.

Cool episode. I've driven a 42 GPW many times. I took my later best man, Vic to buy his in 1975. Originally Navy, It currently has Army Air Corps markings to match his dad's outfit. His dad was a tail gunner in a B24. Engine swapped to a GM V6, same as Jeep did in the late 60s through the 70s. 33 x 12.50s seem huge on it. It's been doing Moab trips since the early 80s. Lots of its parts have Ford logos on them, so we know it's a GPW, not an MB.

wait you own jeeps and have never driven a flat fender? i have wheeled in almost every version of the wrangler made and my favorite is actually a flat fender there is somthing you get in a old tiny jeep that these newer jeeps cant recreate even like a cj5 feels nothing like it. i would encourage everyone that likes these giant 4 door monstrosities to go wheeling in a 2 door jeep at least once... not a new 2 door i mean a real 2 door jeep, just try it out and see what jeeping actually is.(not trying to knock on newer jeeps but it isnt the same its like saying that new bronco's are like the old ones, they just aren't)

At winter jamboree, they were trying climb the line to the left of the Middle Monkey! They were so fun to watch. Even with 3 men pushing, they could not climb it... they sure gave it their all... and then they were off to the next adventure. So so so fun to watch. There are youtube channels that feature people in those old little jeeps wheeling all over Moab and going through and over obstacles that only the most built-up modified modern Wranglers or Tacos would consider traversing, so maybe a Lite Brite old school jeep would add some cool content to your channel.

On a sidenote, the shovel and Axe on the side of the old WWII Jeeps, are actually pretty good.
I've used one of those axes for many years, and it still have plenty of life left in it. 😁

Kevin! Question... your front frame chop bumper. I see it's not painted or powdercoated. What do you do to keep it looking good with the raw steel finish all the time? Clear spray paint?

“Was the first jeep made by ford?” No, it was made by Willys, but they were not able to manufacture them as fast as the military needed them, so FMC was contracted to manufacture them alongside Willys.
However, Henry being Henry, every single panel in a Jeep built by fmc was stamped with the Ford Logo.

Got to be a passenger in my friend John Rambo's 1944 Certified WW2 Willys MB bone stock unrestored ( It needed to be ) back in 2007 , he brought it to Rausch Creek PA , and I couldn't believe how capable it was , it went everywhere, did everything we pointed it at an obstacles and she did what Jeeps do , great memories and I gotta find it but I have a picture somewhere, John would wear exact WW2 uniform ,including Helmet! And I'm in Camo and my friend who I grew up with in Queens NY is wearing a bright red Jersey, looked so odd 😆 and even though I have a Toyota with a jeep front axle, I'll always be a jeep guy, they really are insane offroad machines! On road, not as much, fun fact, after WW2 the Mitsubishi company copied the willys jeep and other willys vehicles, my friend just found a 60s Mitsubishi willys wagon clone here in long Island, it really nice but he's such a jeep guy ( Has a 46 flatly @tested46cj ) he won't buy it , $6500 great deal
