Well, after the last marching video I made, I got tons of requests to watch these two videos so here's another look at my firsthand reaction to these amazing performances! Thank you to everyone who suggested to watch SCV 2018 + BD 2017, I can't wait to watch more cams and full runs. As always, if you have anything you'd like to see on this segment, head to www.adamtanpercussion.com/submit :) Thanks for watching! #TheStudioFamily
It my not be a marimba video but this is probably another part of the marching world that you might not even know exists, people would really wanna see your reaction to this video th-cam.com/video/TtG17t_ZbP4/w-d-xo.html
The show "Metamorph" is a show about how Blue Devils has grown and changed over the years, with tributes to past shows. Yeah, only the Blue Devils can do a show about the Blue Devils, the biggest flex. There's usually like 4 to 5 movements in a show: The Opener, sometimes starts out with front ensemble only (sometimes its a "pre show" with choreography), the 2nd movement (aka the meat and potatoes), The Ballad (usually third), a short percussion feature (where you see the snares, tenors, basses get a solo), then a Closer that's Fast and Loud.
60th anniversary - "diamond" - the voice is the founder, Jerry Seawright, recorded at the corps' very first performance - past, present, future - hence the window in the corner, representing the future ... enjoy
Man, when I saw this show at Allentown, I shed a tear after hearing his voice. I've seen all of the BD shows( video) and this show captured everything about the Blue Devils. I had chills.
I marched in 1977 and Mr. Seawright was a friend, mentor and a really bad cook - his voice and pride (as a Marine) were unmistakeable...they don’t make ‘em like that anymore so he expected us to make ourselves...good leaders do that....
Older concert percussionist here - great to see your fresh-eyed perspective on DCI stuff! I’ve been gaga for Drum Corps ever since I was in high school at the tail end of the ‘70’s and early ‘80’s, and realize now that I’ve seen the whole latter-day artistic age of the activity form in front of my eyes, right from the years when it started to happen. Mine was probably the first generation of fired-up teens to accept it eagerly as an art form, not just a pseudo-military pageant, and accept things like flowing movement and dance, sideline percussion ensemble, and advanced concert music repertoire. Me and my band classmates devoured DCI World Championship LP’s like other teens rocked out on Kansas, Yes, and Procol Harem, oohing and aahing at the sophisticated sonic wonders of Santa Clara Vanguard, and the mindblowing roar of the Madison Scouts in their prime. We spent our school days trying to cajole our marching band director into more of a cool “drum corps” mentality, begging for drum carriers (trash the straps!) and new uniforms in the current cool drum corps style. Only regret? My music school training at Indiana University crowded out all the summers I might have been able to spend playing with the now-legendary Star of Indiana corps, which was in its first couple of seasons right there near campus. What a trip, man. 😎
It's so much fun to watch you watch this and appreciate it. These musicians and dancers are filling local theatres and orchestras annually. For perspective, performing after you know you've won must be one of the most liberating feelings a professional could have. It's all about showing off and style at that point, isn't it? I won a state championship in the Indiana State University stadium. Whatever the hell it was called. "Biggest assemblage of aluminum bleachers in the state", or whatever. Last year anyone won a state championship there. "We burned that fucker down!" ;)
14:50 when you asked why their cheering, theyre cheering because dci brass ensembles are so strong that you can feel the sound hit you when all the brass plays at once, its an indescribable sensation
In most of these drum corps they are world class, meaning you have to be really really really really *inhales* really really really really good, even for wind instruments
Fun fact Adam, Lucas oil stadium is partially designed for sound just for drum corps and that’s also why there’s a huge black curtain in the background (and the blue devils tag before the last note is from an audio recording of their very first dci performance in 1972!)
Hello Adam! I loved this video of you reacting to drum corps. For more context of the Blue Devils 2017 Show, it was to celebrate their 60th “Diamond” Anniversary. You might see their reference with “Shine bright like a diamond” and “Crystal” -Trumpet Section And the show is called metamorph to show their change throughout all 60 years of Blue Devils. This is shown with the ballad section of “Everything must change.”
Also the context of the show is basically the whole story of the blue devils. The person talking at the start of the show is the exact recording of the first blue devils show and as the show goes on it progresses through the years to now
Also, this show is about essentially the corps itself. It's also in celebration of their 60th year anniversary, and there are a lot of diamond themes in the show, like that triangle formation!
Dude the live sound from these corps would BLOW your mind. It’s insane. I’m a high school assistant band director for a very competitive marching band on the east coast. Every year we get to go to Annapolis Maryland to see a DCI show. The kids always loose their minds. It’s seriously AMAZING. We have had a few kids (including 2 staff members) go through the Cadets Corp. it’s really an amazing activity and performed on such a high level. Actually got to see this blue devils show live at that competition. It was 10+ minutes of goose bumps 😂
idk if you know this, but what makes DCI even crazier, is the fact that the age cut off is 21. So these are a bunch of kids sounding this good and being this precise. Its absolute astonishing
2017 was the 60th anniversary of the corps, and the show was meant to represent how they had evolved over the years as a group. The whole show is an extended metaphor, and was (literally) showing a metamorphosis from a caterpillar to a butterfly at the end of the show. That’s why flight of the bumblebee was included, and the color guard had wings towards the end. Also, the “concord, blue devils” line at the end was (I think) the voice of an announcer from the first DCI finals that BD participated in, or at least something similar to that. I’m glad you enjoyed this show, it’s personally one of my favorites
The voice at the beginning and end was BD director Jerry Seawright at their very first competitive run as a drum & bugle corps in 1971..2 years before they ever left California on tour. Nice to see Jerry get a ring as a performing member (after he passed in 2004). The wings are also from the early 80s....we used them in the 84 show.
All these bands practice 12 to 13hrs a day 6 days a week for about 3 to 4 months. Being in a drum corp is the ultimate dedication to music and performance. If you get a chance to come to america come during july/august so you can wath some corps
2017 was the blue devils 60th anniversary and their show is about how DCI has evolved as an activity and the direction it may head. You can see that in the shift from more traditional marching onto the field with the full uniform and shakos (hats) into the more modern more experimental uniforms/visuals/music. The ballad section where the brass all goes right in the front is called “everything must change” by Bernard Ighner and the show uses the concept of metamorphosis (hence the name metamorph) as a central theme.
That's actually the 4th time they ran the show that weekend. Preliminary round, semi-finals, finals, and then their encore run! fav marching performance of all time, The Bluecoats Drum & Bugle Corp 2014 show called "Tilt" it will blow you away!
Video is of course SCV '18, finals week at Martinsville HS. I was there quite a bit that week....there is a recording of just the battery and front ensemble made during finals week that is quite good. The whole package was phenomenal, and was clearly world champions that year.
There are so many diamond references (their first formation in the beginning with the big hit, the Rihanna "Shine Bright Like a Diamond", because that show was the Blue Devils' diamond anniversary (I think 75 years)
Don't know if anyone mentioned this, but these are all students in their teens and 20s. So, yeah, these are America's best brass players...of that age. I'm always amazed at what these groups can do!
Fun fact the trumpet part after the first bumble bee section was played in 2016 by a Japanese highschool marching band which was taught by one of the music writers of the blue devils I foind the vid on YT a while ago I can never find it now but it's there
If you would like to watch another high school marching band. I go to Tarpon Springs and we are a little bit different then the typical marching band. Just look up Tarpon Springs marching band 2014 or 2018 I was in the 2018 production and that was the best finals run we have ever had! Another great marching band in high school is Broken Arrow!
The first clip (SCV) was possibly one of the most interesting and 'flex' shows i have listened too. During the closer, the mello section do a 15 second sustain. So yeah, its not just percussion doing it. Its possibly one of the best overall shows.
The best brass players in the world usually have so many years of experience on them. The maximum age for a member of a DCI corps is 21 years old. So the oldest person marching on the field is probably midway through college whenever you see a show. Once you’re past 21, you’re not allowed to march anymore. Also, you watched the entirety of the Blue Devils 2017 show entitled “Metamorph”. And it was their 60th Anniversary since the founding of the corps (or their diamond anniversary). That’s why a lot of the field formations are in the form of a diamond, and that’s why they use the “Shine bright like a diamond” line a lot. The term “Metamorph” refers to the change in not only the corps, but in the activity of drum corps itself. They pay homage to the more rigid, militaristic style of drum corps back then, to celebrating what it currently is now, to finally looking into the window of what drum corps could further evolve into being. Which is why as the show goes on, you’ll see the drill/visual style on the field go from more symmetrical formations to more abstract formations. I was there live for the performance you watched. And watching it live is just breathtaking. We do applaud that much because it’s just so amazing. Lastly, watch it again and look for the uniform change 😉
The crowd is going crazy in the first “triangle” set (actually a diamond) because the brass is so insanely loud your ears bleed. It is so hype being in the first few rows. I was in the 3rd row for dci San Antonio this year and after blue coats went I couldn’t hear anything!
- -14:23 Butterfly larvae pop their heads out before retreating. By the end they (meta) morph into butterflies 22:50 - -14:40 The hornline is in a diamond shape for their diamond anniversary. - -15:50 Flight of the bumblebee symbolizes taking flight. - -19:00 Flags have butterfly imprints. - - 19:59 Diamond formation again - - 20:00 Shine bright like a diamond by Rihanna fits well with the formation - -20:12 The staircases make diamond tops for their diamond anniversary. just saw this video and i hope you see this for the background.
The Blue Devil's show was about the development of the blue devils since the beginning, hence the name Metamorph. There's a lot of callbacks throughout the show. Some cool parts of this show that are unique: the entire drumline plays snare at the start of the show, all of the solo parts were improvised by those players in the ballad, the mellophones all picked up trumpets at 20:50 so that's why the trumpets are so crisp there, and there's more too but that's just a few.
Metamorph was the Blue Devils 60th Anniversary show which is why they had the tag at the end and also the voice over from their first show ever at the beginning. Their ballad was one of the most hyped up ballad hits of all time and they won their 18th World Championship title with a score of 98.33. They also won every caption. The show's name Metamorph is derived from the term Metamorphosis or to change shape and the show reflects their metamorphosis from an awkward insecure A band into the 19(then 18) time DCI World Class drum and bugle corps. They also won their 19th world championship title in August 2019 with their other throwback show Ghostlight which featured hits from Metamorph(2017), Felliniesque(2014), and their 2008 show whose name i forget right now. If your trying to get a sense of what DCI bands are like, then I would strongly recommend Ghostlight or Felliniesque.
The dci summer is so crazy it's practice all day long then comp then bus ride then repeat for like 2 and a half months with many audition camps before in preseason and many other camps
Metamorph from the Blue Devils actually is supposed to show the history of the Corp by taking bits and pieces of some of their shows and making this beautiful show out of it.
I was in my high school's marching band. The teacher and his son (who was actually in a DCI band at one point) agreed that DCI is "marching bands on steroids". I'd recommend watching Fact Fiend's video about marching band culture in the states as well for some context and tidbits of fun facts.
Blue devils are known for their visuals Carolina Crown, is known for their brass, which is consistently the best SCV is known for their percussion, which is also consistently winn in g in that department. If you want a show to watch, I'd suggest Carolina Crown 2016... but honestly, there are so many good shows that you could watch it's hard to name them all.
Crown 2018 has some pretty knarly percussion parts,it’s also one of my favourite shows! Seeing and listening to Babylon made me want to audition in the future
Well, after the last marching video I made, I got tons of requests to watch these two videos so here's another look at my firsthand reaction to these amazing performances! Hey the marimba cam is good BUT THE XYLO cam by michael tan is AMAZING
watch xylo/bell cam from michael tran from blue devils 2017. its god tier.
The show "Metamorph" is a show about how Blue Devils has grown and changed over the years, with tributes to past shows. Yeah, only the Blue Devils can do a show about the Blue Devils, the biggest flex.

Adam Tan Ok if you liked these ones you’ll LOVE Cavaliers 2019 Marimba cam. It’s INSANE
blue devils are amazing
seeing this stuff in person is 100 times better. you feel the power these corps can push out and its amazing.
Big chords, big chills, never doubt
They already won, it’s an encore performance. That’s why so much applause… BD strong.
60th anniversary - "diamond" - the voice is the founder, Jerry Seawright, recorded at the corps' very first performance - past, present, future - hence the window in the corner, representing the future ... enjoy

2 of the best ballads in DCI history
Two best shows
Metamorph is literally my favorite show
Older concert percussionist here - great to see your fresh-eyed perspective on DCI stuff!

I recommend Crown 2014
Yay that marimba cam is our pit tech
It's so much fun to watch you watch this and appreciate it.

the drumline is more than just the snares my man
It’s just so much better in person
They’re cheering because that was an impact moment for the show
DCI culture is something else man. People go absolutely nuts, going to shows are some of the best musical experiences I’ve had.
14:50 when you asked why their cheering, theyre cheering because dci brass ensembles are so strong that you can feel the sound hit you when all the brass plays at once, its an indescribable sensation
In person its even better, more enjoyable being on the field apart of it
SCV 2018 ballad and closer tho! Goosebumps every time
In most of these drum corps they are world class, meaning you have to be really really really really *inhales* really really really really good, even for wind instruments
performing in this stadium is an honor, i went my freshman year of hs it was the coolest experiences
Drum Corps shows in person are so far different than in person. You feel it in your bones, the perfect brass melts your ears.
blue devils 2019 and 2014 are must watches imo
Honestly Babylon is the biggest flex in all the sections
Fun fact Adam, Lucas oil stadium is partially designed for sound just for drum corps and that’s also why there’s a huge black curtain in the background (and the blue devils tag before the last note is from an audio recording of their very first dci performance in 1972!)

AmaZinG
Yes they are color guard
Really enjoying your reactions to these shows
Ah yes, a man of culture.
I’m a senior in high school and I’m playing the contra tuba, one of my instructors is in blue devils !
The Blue Devils show you watched was the first show I ever saw in person. It was unbelievable,
2017 was the 60th anniversary of the corps, and the show was meant to represent how they had evolved over the years as a group. Tyler is the marimba to the left of the person in the SCV 2018 cam
My band director marched this show:D
All these bands practice 12 to 13hrs a day 6 days a week for about 3 to 4 months. Being in a drum corp is the ultimate dedication to music and performance. If you get a chance to come to america come during july/august so you can wath some corps
In Sydney Olympics 2000, my band teacher led the whole olympic band.
My favorite marching show isn't much of a precision showcase, but I still love it. Bluecoats 2014 Tilt
this video made me so happy lol.
Sparticus by the phantom regiment
Thank you for helping popularise and getting the word out for this activity
I still remember watching scv fe warmup last year before finals
Metamorph is the biggest flex of all for existing
2017 was the blue devils 60th anniversary and their show is about how DCI has evolved as an activity and the direction it may head. fav marching performance of all time, The Bluecoats Drum & Bugle Corp 2014 show called "Tilt" it will blow you away!
Awesome.. all of it. I'm generally not of fan of non-marching instruments, but this was really good.
This video gave me life
Video is of course SCV '18, finals week at Martinsville HS. I was there quite a bit that week....there is a recording of just the battery and front ensemble made during finals week that is quite good. The whole package was phenomenal, and was clearly world champions that year.

I'm in the Battalion drum and bugle corps. And I write some front ensemble music for my local high school marching band and it is so much fun
You have to watch BlueCoats 2016!
Metamorph was the reason why joined Blue Devils pit
I never seen anything like this before
literally my 2 favorite shows ever
Don't know if anyone mentioned this, but these are all students in their teens and 20s. So, yeah, these are America's best brass players...of that age. I'm always amazed at what these groups can do!
Wasn't sure if you know or not but all of these performers are all 21 years or younger, so they're all this skilled so young
I'm in the broken arrow pride and I was on the indonapolis field 2021 and we won with a score of 98.25
congrats on the win!! im from hebron i wish SO BAD we couldve came to grand nats
I wish more orchestral/classical percussionists would approach drum corps with an open mind like this!
SCV has amazing percussion. This year I they had a really good percussion section too.
Blue coat sousa right here!!!!!
Fun fact the trumpet part after the first bumble bee section was played in 2016 by a Japanese highschool marching band which was taught by one of the music writers of the blue devils I foind the vid on YT a while ago I can never find it now but it's there
one of the vibraphones first 2018-2019, marrisa bowler was a tech at my school for a season. it was super kick ass. she was a good tech
My personal favorite DCI Show of all time has to be Bluecoats 2012 "Unmasqued"
I saw the 2019 finals and it was so much better in person
that chick on marimba from the beginning was PHENOMENAL! OwO
im so proud of adam for bearing with and appreciating the brass flexing. lol
I’d recommend watching bluecoats 2015. Hands down the cleanest percussion section on the east coast that year
I love that you say that they must have the best brass players in the country when the age range is 16-21
bablylon live was the CRAZIEST thing ever i sat right behind the DM finals weekend
If you wanna hear high brass watch the full video of SCV 2018
The first clip (SCV) was possibly one of the most interesting and 'flex' shows i have listened too. During the closer, the mello section do a 15 second sustain. So yeah, its not just percussion doing it. Its possibly one of the best overall shows.
It amazes me that these groups are all around the age of 21 lol. Some ridiculous amounts of hard work
The show is about how they evolved as a corps over the many years of the activity
The best brass players in the world usually have so many years of experience on them. The maximum age for a member of a DCI corps is 21 years old. WATCH THE BLUE DEVILS 2017 Marimba CAM!
I mean we have marching percussion in Australia and competitions from optimum percussion but it is for high school kids
if you want a few more cool marching percussion things, check out Cavaliers Marimba Split Runs in 2011 or 2014
I highkey recommend Carolina Crown 2016 marimba cam

hey! for the metamorph performance, search up the marimba cam, then there you go!
Drum core is fugals and percussion
Blue devils are known for their visuals
Carolina Crown, is known for their brass, which is consistently the best
SCV is known for their percussion, which is also consistently winn in g in that department.
