    Thanks to Trav for joining me on this one - it's been a video we've had in the works for about a year now, but stuff just kept getting in the way for each of us. I'm glad to finally share the result with you! Make sure to subscribe to Trav too, if you're not already: th-cam.com/channels/zmECGDexdpx2FxNoRy8-_w.html

      Interesting, I managed to snag a Mint copy of Exhumed (the EU/AUS release of Powerslave) for $50 on eBay as soon as I saw the Digital Foundry video on it and went onto eBay straight after 🤷‍♂️ btw Night Dive Studios did a GREAT job Remastering and Combining the good aspects of both the PS1 and Sega Saturn Versions as Powerslave Exhumed and released like 3 days ago, it is available for like $20 on PS4/PS5, Xbone/XsX, Switch & PC

    Underrated game that flew under the radar somehow. Still holds up incredibly well to this day!
    The cringey cheap cutscenes are even charming and endearing as a throwback to that era.

    • @TheGoldenBolt
      @TheGoldenBolt  ปีที่แล้ว

      A fun little fact here: My face was a common sight in the first like...five "seasons" of TGB! Not every video had my mug on it, but most of them did until COVID, when my set and everything wasn't easily accessible for every video. As the videos got more involved, I got less and less interested doing all the work setting up to film like 2 obligatory minutes of live footage, setting up a different microphone and everything, having to sync the video and audio afterwards - and on top of that it all took so much longer because I'd try to script my live lines and take forever to actually get a good take.
      Now I'm a lot better about nailing it in a couple takes (partly because I don't script the live anymore, I just let it flow), but unless there's a really good reason for me to be on camera, it's just more work than it's usually worth, at least until I have a dedicated set area where I can just leave my equipment all set up and ready to go!

    I actually remember this game! A friend of my uncle's rented it once, but that was back when I had just discovered Tomb Raider. Those first two TR games owned my life for awhile, but I still checked out the back of the Disruptor box to see what it was all about and seen a grizzly bear that just looked cheesy to me at the time. Also, Cathrine Hardwick may have directed the first Twilight, but I choose to remember her for directing the movie Thirteen, an indy film that was pretty fantastic as well as quite depressing. Great video!

    "The other, better Doom 3."
    *ooh, spicy take.* Side tangent, but personally, I'm on the fence about that one. It made adjustments that - while fan requested - undermined the core design philosophy of the title. The gun flashlight in particular, but I believe there were others I'm forgetting. I only played the classic.
    The core balancing I would have preferred to adjust were the imps and melee mutants that were almost guaranteed to hit you. Maybe tighten the spread of the shotgun a bit. It usually works fine since you're in claustrophobic environments mainly using it against enemies you get close to in the first place, but the inconsistency of the damage does get annoying at times - a blow only softened by making the plasma gun of all weapons the workhorse of the game instead.

    This game is the best fps on the PS1. Its way ahead of its Time. Its like a early Bioshock game. Its one of the first games that has a dynamic Soundtrack and not only a set of the usual weapons but also special abilities you can use in combat. Its very cinematic and diverse in level design and presentation. Calling it a Doom clone is almost like calling Doom a Wolfenstein Clone.

    Disruptor was a fun game, but it could really use better enemy variety. You usually fight 2-3 enemy types on every level, some are even reskinned.
    They had pretty cool weapon designs though. The ammo was scarce af so you could rarely use them to full potential... But the psionics were awesome!

    The level geometry looks like a Saturn game ported over to the Playstation. Which shouldn't be too surprising, since 3DO's graphics hardware is fundamentally similar to Saturn's VDP1.
    Both VDP1 and 3DO were blitters with sprite-scaling capability. The key difference to Playstation is not only that Playstation has triangles, but that you can freely place the texture on the polygons, so not every poly has to use the whole texture. So there is a lot of "interesting" texture warping in this game - independent of affine warp, induced by the hardware - that for example where there's a round door or opening, the world textures wrap around that. However because it's all quads, they can also use quad-splitting on the Playstation to correct the affine drift on near textures at least somewhat.
    When you say "elevators open behind you" the illustrative footage at 14:00 is funny, because it's you turning around and away from where the elevator will open... this doesn't need any rotating platform or anything, but maybe better visual clues or something. This was always the case in Doom because the map must make sense when seen top down with no overlapping parts. Even when you lack such constraint, this was actually considered good design at the time, especially if the game was going to have automap - and this one does. Turning was pretty tedious back then before the mouse and analogue stick controls too. Of course on the next elevator you show, the elevator uses the same door that you came through in when it arrives, so i understand the confusion.
    The only positive thing about the 3DO is that it's a failure? Well unlike Jaguar, it's not an engineering trainwreck, though it's not as powerful as Saturn or as elegant as Playstation.

    • @TheGoldenBolt
      @TheGoldenBolt  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The elevator clip was the easiest one to show off the issue: That was only level 5 I believe and I was already trained to turn around for the exit because elevators had been all over the place prior! As for the 3DO prod at the end, I mean that more in the sense that had the 3DO been even _slightly_ more successful, Insomniac develops the game for that platform and potentially shuts down after just one game - meaning we never get Spyro, Ratchet, Resistance, Spider-Man, etc.

    I bought Disruptor when it first dropped because I am and will forever be an FPS junkie. I too have played every type of Doom WAD and game you can think of...However, I do not see Disruptor as a Doom clone. It was far to inventive for that. It definitely didn't look like it came from Doom's engine either. It was far too clean for that and this was long before the many mods that attempt to bring the original Doom and Doom 2 up to modern standards. Not even Doomsday Kickstarter is that old. Great video.

      Difficulty aside, I think with the cheats to give you a leg up in the less-than-fun sections, this is worth grabbing if you can find a copy for around $20 or so. Complete copies usually hit $40-60 it looks like nowadays, so I can't recommend it at that unless you really want to collect it!

  • @MrRhysReviews

    I've always been fascinated by this game and how everyone seems to think Spyro 1 is the beginning of Insomniacs long history, glad I managed to snag a local Australian Copy in Mint Condition FINALLY about a year or two ago... Another great, overlooked Doom Clone FPS was Exhumed or Powerslave (depending on Region, Exhumed here in Aus) and it's an AWESOME game that is kinda Metroid Prime but years earlier, with Upgrades/Abilities you obtain as you progress (like longer/higher jumping etc.) which you can then go back to a previous Level to find a different Exit to a new string of Levels etc. etc. it's slightly different on PlayStation and Sega Saturn (and most say the Saturn Version is superior but who the hell has one of those 🤣) but the PC Version is just meh and was built off the Build Engine from memory (and is more of a straight up Shooter as opposed to a Metroid Prime style "First Person Adventure" so skip that, I believe a fan project has brought the PS1 Version over to PC so go with that 👍)

    I used to play this game a lot at maybe 5 or 6 years old and I can't even say it was THAT hard, I only remember dying a few times at that weird psionic brain-themed level with no weapons and the last mission, which was more annoying than hard with those shitheads spawning behind you all the time. I would just say the difficulty mostly depends on your ability and will to dodge and constantly generate psi for the better abilities
