Appreciate your sharing. I was brought up in Canada in a home where our income was lower than "middle class" (that term had not been invented then). However, my parents budgeted and TAUGHT us how to live WELL on what we had available. I am so grateful for that. Many people have not been trained in ANY area of how to manage their home. When I married in 1968 our couple budget was $10 per week at the grocery store, including all household expendable needs. To think we ate 21 meals a week EACH, with variety, is a blessing. Gas was 17 cents a gallon and our car got 8 miles per gallon. The principle of making my menus AFTER buying the week's sale items, was actually a joy for me. I hope people will find a blessing in your tips. Just have grace for those watching you who are trusting you with their time and trying to learn. A tone of teaching without acting like those without your skills are just stupid, lazy and incompetent will go a long way toward helping your viewers. I do have all of your books, having started years ago with your mom's book about how she took care of a family on $500 a month! I remember the attention it got while I was reading it on a plane heading to see my mom for her birthday and Mother's Day. (I could have sold a hundred of them.). LOL. Keep up the good work. We are attentive! Love and hugs from Tennessee.💟

While watching this clip I took a bag of 1/2 price organic apples, peeled and cored apples to make applesauce. I then took the peels and cores, put into (2) 1/2 gal canning jars with sugar and water to start apple vinegar. When vinegar done my dog will eat the peels and the cores will be given to birds. No waste.😊

Now at 80 my mom is aggressively demented, almost as if the devil was in her. There is no more hope that one day she really loves me and would show it. In Jill's eyes and look you can see every minute how proud she is of Tawra and how much she loves her. That is motherly love! Thank you to show me, that there IS love between mother and daughter!

While I appreciate that Jill eats on only $20/week, it's not fair to compare her to, say, a hunger teenager. I have 3 boys ages 12-15 and they are ravenous. What I am trying to avoid is things like unnecessary snack or convenience foods, but it's so hard to keep them fed on a modest budget. I am grateful though that they mostly appreciate foods like beans and rice, and try to stretch things out with extra pasta/rice/bread when I can.

@@LivingOnADime I understand that - I just think it's hard to hear someone say that they can live on $80 a month when talking about rising food prices and feel like you should be able to do the same thing. So you are saying that for you it's $100/month per boy? Or all 3? It's been hard for us because I do feel like prices have gone up at least 30-50% and we have hit the teenage boy phase at the same time where they are eating more. Milk used to be $2/gallon, now it's $3. Eggs used to be 59 cents a dozen, now, after coming down, they are $1.50/dozen. Bread used to be $.89/loaf, now it's $1.29 - that's a 50% increase. Oatmeal used to be $2.49, now it's $3.69. Chicken used to be $1.89/lb, now it's $2.49/lb. I could go on and on, but basically, It adds up, and we don't shop brand prices - we use Aldi in KS.

I expanded my garden again this year and got a few more chicks to add to my flock. The chickens pay for themselves. I give my parents eggs and my dad stops by with chicken feed every couple of months.
As for the garden, I'm blessed to be harvesting carrots, berries, chard, garlic and cabbage, and my summer crops are in the ground.
You can spend a lot on gardening or very little. You can even grow things from veggie grocery store scraps on a window sill. Every bit that you grow is money you aren't spending at the store. I'm definitely no master Gardner like Tawra, and sure, I have lots of fails, but if you keep trying, you get some wins, and then more wins as you learn. It's so satisfying cooking with food that you grew yourself.

We went across the country to visit my 73 year old sister in Memphis in May. She’s been having medical problems and I wanted to spend time with her while she can still get around and enjoy things. One of the things she wanted to do was go to the Cheesecake Factory. With tip it cost over $100 for three adults.

I would love to see other peoples baskets, that’s my favorite thing at the grocery store is to look at what the people in line have in their carts. It is shocking to me how many times there’s no real food in the baskets. That said once in a blue moon my husband and I go to the grocery store like two 12-year-olds with $100 bill, now we don’t really spend $100 but you get the point !! That doesn’t happen very often , not even once a year, and it is usually for a trip or special event like our anniversary ,Lol !!

hilarious about the toaster quest! American toasters must be really crappy if they can't toast properly on both sides! interesting that the air fryer toasts bread perfectly!

My toaster oven quit and I've been using the air fryer for months to make toast! One less thing on my counter too! I also have a "toast" option on my oven if I need to make a lot of toast like for BLT's.

as a kid we never had butter on our popcorn. We just had salt on it and we loved it. I did cook it in a pan with a little oil or shortening. I was the oldest of 4 kids and we had popcorn a lot as a snack in the evenings. I still like it the way we use to make it.

Thank you for another fine video.
I have learn so much, how to shop for less, without spending tons of money .
I am 57 years old, living on SSDI, since 1996. But have worked part time jobs, after giving birth, to my now 16 years old daughter.
She too is living on SSI, and we pretty much get by, doing lots of fun stuff for free.
She not too much of a people person, but that's okay, by her being Autistic.
What I would like to address, how you are so right, about moms in the work force.
I think, life were better, when women who are marry, stay home, and if they wanted to work, could work from home now.
Most single moms, like myself, do not have that choice, so I quite my job, when I decided, to home school her.
Like I mention, most single mothers, who are working, don't get that choice, to stay home. Most of them, are working long hours, and too tired to cook a home cook meals, because they are beat. And so goes for marry women, who are working, outside the home😊

I found the article. If you read carefully the first set of numbers is for January through April Flour increased in price 17.8% but the second set of number is for May to June Flour rose 0.5% So you have to really read these articles carefully and think about it. I cannot post the link here but it was published Wednesday May 10, 2023. Also CNN published a similar article on July 12 and flour had come down in price but was still up 12.1% from January to June.

So if you just glance over any news articles remember, news outlets are a business and they need commercials to pay for their extensive staff and offices. Who benefits from this article? What audience are they trying to attract? Still they need to make money as they are a business. Think about it.

    • @ellenspn
