Ah yes Arch Enemy. There's a reason why this band has been consistently at the top of the charts for metal for decades now: Ammott really knows how to take extreme metal and actually make it accessible: Full of energy but within a discernible and easy to grasp sound structure. In my opinion because of the "melodic" part of Melodic Death Metal is present as he sets up melody driven chorus parts and guitar leads. It's not easy to appreciate how yes, 100% of their songs have growling, but also almost 100% of their songs have so strong a melody that people can and usually do sing along the guitar parts on live shows. Vocals basically take the role rhythmic guitars usually take on metal and the melody is carried out entirely by guitars. So even with a wall of sound, even with just about the most distorted vocals you can ever find on any genre, these songs are still catchy and memorable. I think the fact that you can make something that's legit extreme music, accessible, is quite an accomplishment if you look at how we usually think about popular music and how this stuff keeps filling up festivals in the tens of thousands of people and gets millions and millions of views and listens when 30 years ago people were legit kind of fascinated and kind of scared of Death Metal for the very first time.
I love the two albums that Alissa White-Gluz has been vocalist for. She was the front for The Agonist previously and has really good cleans but rarely uses them now. Arch Enemy is really built for live shows, have a huge following and are always one of the headliners everywhere.
You're pretty spot-on with locating Arch Enemy within the death metal genre: a somewhat more accessible bridge from softer metal to harder stuff. Pretty solid material, fair riffs, I don't think I care for it as much as the Wages of Sin stuff but it's still pretty good fun. The part you identified as having a more classical feel with regards to note selection seemed almost reminiscent of early Fleshgod Apocalypse. Anyone else get that vibe?
There’s a reason people recommend the older stuff, simply because its superior in both vocally and musically. Admittedly that solo in the end is kickass
Yeah, melodic death metal is a pretty popular subgenre, you already did another melodic death song (Wintersun- Sons of winter and stars). If you are interested in this genre, I think you would really enjoy Dimmu Borgir. Other melodeath bands you should really check at least one song are Insomnium (anything from Shadow of the dying sun album) and Aephanemer (Bloodline).
I'm not a big fan of Alissa in Arch Enemy. She's a great vocalist, but I think her potential is kinda wasted here. You should check out some older stuff from The Agonist to have the greater picture, Panophobia or Bussiness Suits and Combat Boots for example. She can do much more than just guttural singing, her cleans are on par with her guttural skills. And I'm convinced Arch Enemy would profit from her clean vocals, not only would it probably bring more poeple in that are "afraid" (in lack of a better word) from guttural vocals to the band, I'd say it would fit their style as well. But then, I'm just a guy that knew her before she started at Arch Enemy and was a fan way back when...
If you liked melodic death metal, here is a list of bands and their albums you could listen to... Carcass - Heartwork At The Gates - Slaughter Of The Soul old In Flames - The Jester Race Be'l'akor - Stone's Reach Eucharist - A Velvet Creation Dark Tranquility - The Gallery Metal fan here from the Philippines. 🇵🇭
Arch Enemy is one of the bands I went through years ago when I was exploring melodic death metal. They really didn't leave a strong impression either way. I don't dislike them, and it's stuff I enjoy while it's playing, but they seem a bit generic compared to Dark Tranquility, early In Flames, and At the Gates. I will say they put on a good live show, as I saw them when they played a metal-fest with Opeth, Lamb of God, and Megadeth.
Would really recommend you react to Lacuna Coil Blood Tears Dust official video the vocalist Cristina Scabbia is one of the best clean female metal singers in general.
Hey man, here are some bands you could react to: The Mars Volta Bask Long Distance Calling Caligula's Horse Rosetta It would be cool if you can react to some of these. Cheers!

less technical, and more melodic: that's why it's called melodic death metal ... so, well put :)

I don't sit and listen to AE much but I never feel let down when I hear em either. Kind of right in the middle of the road with flourishes of amazing.

Yea Arch is melodic death metal. They have shredding dueling guitarist which reminds me of Megadeth.
If youre gunna fo some melo desth youve gotta do some Be'lakor if not them then insomnium or Wintersun

Yeah it would be cool if he can react to older The Agonist with Alissa and also the new album with Vicky in there
Check out Soilwork - Spectrum Of Eternity. One of the greatest melodic death metal songs imo.

The vocals seemed like kind of a throw-away. The more melody that was introduced the more I liked it.
React to Bloodmeat by Protest the Hero!

Who's in the shower?
Yeah, the audio was getting pretty egregious at this point. Fortunately it's all sorted out now and that shouldn't be an issue anymore
