I want this little guy so bad! I made custom scales for the original penguin I have, by making a mold of the scales, and pouring in an epoxy, which I reinforced with fishing line, that comes out like 99% clear inside the scales. I'm definitely doing the same for this mini penguin!
Never thought about using fishing line for reinforcement. That’s brilliant.

Been looking forward to this one. Kind of a bummer to see the small quirks, but I’m not totally surprised. For something like this, I really hope they do an M390 variant because I think that works really well on smaller knives like this.

Do it. I have the burlap micarta version. The action is amazing for the price and the d2 takes and holds a screaming sharp edge.
This is exactly the kind of knife I’d like to carry when I’m out and about. It’s small enough it shouldn’t scare anybody (the people I spend time with are NOT knife people-one friend actually insists my Leek is a switchblade and is illegal 🥴), but still up to most things I’d use it for. Also, smaller knives are not a problem-any handle over 3” fits my hand just fine. The ONLY thing that would make it perfect is a button or axis lock (so much more fidgety).
Definitely going to try to pick one up this and the xl I agree with the pocket statement

Love the penguin, have eight different versions of the regular, from one end of price to the other. You're killing me Smalls....
My original Penguin has pivot lash. Does it matter? In my opinion, no. Other knives I own that have pivot lash: Sebenza 31, Spartan Harsey, TRM Atom, Pena Zulu, Pro-Tech Malibu (very slight), etc.
I held off getting a penguin until now and I wanted to love it like everybody else does but maybe I got a bad one. Can't get it perfectly centered. I noticed that the drilled out pivot hole in the blade is sloppy so maybe that's why. It came with four copper washers and two thin teflon washers. I believe there was three copper on one side and one on the other. I read somewhere that there QC were doing that to help center the knives but I think it's kind of cheesy even at this price point. I bought the copper one so that I could play around with a shipwreck patina but it's so damn heavy that I don't know if I'll ever carry it.

Really wish QSP started using a Inset screw on their Penguins, so they could easily be removed and changed out. I certainly hope they have decided to do that on the larger Premium versions coming out. All the Penguins I have owned I had to stonewash due to them being so sharp, digging deep pits into my thumbs. I hope we don't have to deal with that with the new one also. But other than the studs, the knives are great.
I did a hand rubbed satin finish on mine and it looks soooo much nicer.
Now I need premium mini penguins to match my regular penguins with mokuti and titanium scales
I’d love to have one of these, but I think I’ll hold out for a titanium handle, at least.

What's good MC? I have a Penguin and I love it for the price. I'm good with D2 or 14C28N or S30V. I have an original Gerber Gator with 440 stainless and I love it. I have carried it hunting for 30 years and the only concern I have is I have to handle it carefully so as to not amputations or loss of limbs while using it.
My question and maybe concern is, actually a statement...children are sometimes drawn to smaller tools.
I cut myself very bad when I got my hands on a scout knife at the age of 4. I still carry scars from it, I'm 55. Carried scars all my life with a small Shrade or Case in my pocket. Thanks for sharing this video with us!
Yup should definitely have a budget budget steel, d2 or 9cr would be fine, even 8cr if it keeps it ultra affordable

Standard Penguin US$39.95, small $62.50... OK 14C28N but still... I don´t know... Plus version only in premium version for more than 200 bugs. Where is good old QSP?
They are pulling a civivi. Soon we will see a qsp budget line lol. Sucks because the Penguin and parrot are gems for the money.
Yeah, I was totally bummed to see the Penguin Plus being released as a premium model in the $200 range. I just wanted a bigger Penguin with a flipper tab. Can't justify 200 bones on a QSP. That's Benchmade territory.
MC may not think so, but I truly believe that knife companies, especially the “real” knife companies out of China listen to what he says. Maybe not just him but multiple people in the same space as well. Sadly, I think we left the really good prices in the past about 2 years ago, everything is getting more expensive but knives feel better made as well. Still cracks me up when someone scoffs at me spending $80 on a knife I beat on, yet they will spend $200 on a pair of shoes they never wear and collect dust in their closet.
