To be fair to Tillerson, Trump did recount a 1970's yacht orgy story to a huge crowd of 12 year old boys and then got them to boo a former president. My father was an Eagle scout and had a MUCH stronger reaction to hearing about it, then calling Trump a moron. So frankly, I think Rex was probably toning down what he actually thought.
Yeah, I don't think you need to preface your comment with "to be fair to Tillerson" as everyone agrees that, yes, Trump is a Fucking Moron.
But if Tillerson could go from calling Trump a "fucking moron" (which I'd really like to think that he did) to, not only completely denying it, but going so far as to call him smart, he has zero self-respect or spine, and he was the last insider I held out any hope for. There's not a single redeemable character in that rogues gallery of a cabinet. The entire White House is a bonafide disaster.
Edit: Or maybe Trump has some serious dirt on him. I dunno.
I'm certainly not saying he's a quality person by any stretch (He's a former Exon exec who gets along with Putin and now he works for the worst US president since Warren Harding, so his de facto setting was always being a huge piece of shit) I'm just glad to hear that at least the guys who work for Trump think the same thing almost everyone else is thinking (or screaming). That being said, I'm pretty sure Trump chooses his employees based on how much he thinks they'll kowtow to him, so Tillerson's spinelessness is not really a surprise. I mean, he didn't even want the job, apparently his wife made him take it. I would have just told her to eat shit.

What gets me is how quickly the President and his cabinet respond to petty comments and how easily serious questions can be tossed aside. The press ask a serious question and it can be blow off. Sorry, I don't know, you will or I will have to ask the president that. You bring up something petty, we get same day tweets and a spontaneous press conference. They then fill the remaining time of the conference by patting themselves on the back.

I travel for work. I'm a salesman. In the last 6 months alone, I've traveled to more than 30 states and Japan, Singapore, South Korea, England, Spain, Italy and Germany. I have yet to meet a single person that supports Trumps agenda or someone who thinks he is mentally stable or capable. It's quite sobering how his rating is rock bottom pretty much around the world.

The Exxon Mobil's landmark deal to explore for oil in Russia's Arctic and a portion of the Black Sea, and to drill for oil in Siberia, when Rex Tillerson was CEO. The secretary of state, however, said he is recusing himself from matters related to Exxon for two years.
David Hernandez, I think that is an honourable thing, recusing himself of all matters about Exxon, Tillerson is the only one in the west wing with any statesmanship & dignity.

What's weird to me is Tillerson said he didn't know Trump before becoming Secretary of State. So why did Trump pick him? He's not a politician, he had no diplomatic experience, yet he gets one of the most important positions in the president's cabinet. Not some obscure circuit judge or ambassador to Andorra. Of course Trump has made many low level appointments to people he's never met, but he picks someone he's never met and has no experience to such an important position. Seems to me like Exxon bought that job for Tillerson to me.

Putin dangled that trinket in front of Trump during the election just like any good con man would do, just as he held blackmail goods on Trump as collateral. Putin played Trump, just as Trump played his moronic cultists. Putin was playing 3-dimensional chess, while Trump was playing chess, while his followers were playing checkers.
