    Great video. Two tips;
    1). For easier needle threading, wet finger on tongue and wet the needle eye on the thread exit side-water surface tension will grab the thread and draw it for you. I got this tip after 30 yrs sewing.
    2). When replacing machine head into cabinet, make mounting pins stand up with a rubber band around the both of them. Cut band off after machine is mounted😊

    I have my grandmother’s Singer treadle from 1914. It hasn’t been stored well since she passed, so it is ailing. The machine is dust and grime and the cabinet needs new veneer and tlc. But she kept it immaculate when she was alive and I think it will clean up very well. My goal is to make it look great, keeping as much original as possible, and to sew a little hem to display that this hardworking beast still has still got it. My grandmother can’t be happy that it malingered in cellars and barns after she passed, but I’m so grateful it’s still amongst us and I have it now.

    I agree with not taking things apart just because you can. Too many you tubers take every nut and bolt out to clean them when its not necessary. You could damage or lose old parts and upset factory adjusments. I have restored over 40 of these old machines and they all will sew perfectly if no one has messed around with the timing, feed dog height or bobbin tension. Start with simple cleaning and fresh oil.

      If it is not broke don’t mess with it. Blow out, clean and oil then test to determine next action. I love your comment.

    Thank You! Your excellent teaching has given me the confidence to commence restoring the Minnesota Model A (a close match with your Singer treadle). Don't change anything with the way you create your videos -- your teaching and showing are just the right pace!

      Is your Minnesota a standard company machine? I have a Cleveland one and cannot find hardly any information on it. But I think it’s made between 1900-1910. It also has a vibrating shuttle. I’m looking for someone who’s probably in the same boat as I am in.

    I LOVE these old girls! I use a good quality sewing machine oil and cotton balls to clean up the bed and outside paint/decals. Looked up yours, it's a 1926 Singer '66. 50,000 serial numbers were issued October 22nd, 1926.

    Thank you for this video! I bought myself a 1809s singer treadle for my 18th birthday and I'm just now getting to cleaning, repairing, and repainting. By the way, the size 60 thread is actually crochet thread! I believe some used it like embroidery floss as it is thicker than sewing thread.

    This is so fascinating. How wonderful to be able to bring a beautiful machine back to life for another 50 years. I did get nervous when you are squirting turpentine in there that could drip on the lovely deck below and mar the paint finish. Lacquer thinner for sure. I'm loving this project though. I've seen a special cleaner for the painted/decal area of these machines. Don't know the name of it.
    Wrap foot pedal in a cloth or bag before storing on the deck area so not to scratch the paint.

    Thank you for this video! I have just acquired my husband's family heirloom, which is a 1902 Singer Treadle which I found out from the weathered serial plate. It is in pretty bad shape, having been in a garage and is pretty dusty and also rusty in some places. It definitely needs a new belt, the old one definitely needs replacing. The cleaning of the exterior clear coat was very aggressive - it's really delicate and where ever he scrubbed he likely removed that clear coat layer. I recently made this error on a 1940 Singer 201k, I wish I had watched the Vintage Sewing Machine Garage TH-cam channel before I attempted cleaning the exterior. He uses nothing stronger than sewing machine oil on the black exterior. It's a little slower but will act as a mild solvent and the engineers knew it was likely to get onto the surface so the clear coat was designed for that situation.

    • @berninajeff
      @berninajeff  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes I am aware of the clear coat but was willing to remove it because of the build up. Should have warned viewers more.

    I have a few vintage and antique machines I would like to clean and polish. I would be afraid to use the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser on the antiques for fear of removing what's left of the clear coat on them. I would, obviously, not scrub near what's left of the decals either. Can you recommend a good cleaning product for both types? The vintage ones are plastic of course. Should I use a car cleaning product as well as a polishing one for cars? Thanks

    Thank you Jeff for this video! I so appreciate your helping those of us that are trying to rescue these beauties but can't afford to get them all restored by others. I bought a 1930 Singer treadle yesterday and was hoping to clean myself. I found this video and got VERY excited when you said you'd show how to get the spring to work on the bobbin plate. I have the plate for my machine but I can't get it to "hook" or stay down. I trust that's related to the spring? Do you have any other videos that show how to install the plate so that it stays down? Thank you.

How would I "unshellac" the parts that shouldnt be shellaced? I will also need a new rubber/leather wheel on the bobbin winder. I'lll do what I can and go from there.
