    Hi Howard, thanks for the videos. I recently was scored the same for my part 3 as my lesson was too hard. Scored exactly the same for the top section. Was thinking I’d do a much easier lesson but after watching this I’m having doubts- aaarghhh! So many variables. Wish I lived in Norwich. I’ll keep watching ……

    Hi Howard, I have my part 3 test booked very soon and still yet to do my mock. I'm very nervous about both. your videos are great I've learned so much more than I already knew by watching them. I thought that was a great lesson to watch and your breakdown of it at the end was exactly what I needed to hear to help me do things a little differently to try and up my progress for a pass. Thank you

    I thought this was sure to pass but once I heard your scoring, it clicked that it was a good lesson but with very little learning happening and didn't meet pupils needs. These videos are so helpful to follow along and mark and then compare to what you would score! I feel like I'm understanding what the examiner is looking for much better! Thanks

    Excellent video, I am a PDI and lesson was good but I did pick up on a few things but didn't realise they were such low scores, well we live and learn.

    Great Analysis Howard. I’m still 9 hours away from applying for the pink badge and these videos are helpful. I wouldn’t have thought he would have failed that but I’ve noticed that the lesson was far too easy for the pupil. Also, at one point whilst driving the instructor touched and moved the center mirror obscuring it from the pupil view, is that allowed whilst moving? Shouldn’t he checked it before moving off at the beginning of the lesson? Great videos as usual 👍

    Very interesting Howard having watched the lesson and your marking result. I am a PDI at the part 3 exam stage and concur with your thoughts. Although I would like to add there was an occasion during the lesson where another vehicle was stationary at the T junction to the left waiting to exit onto the major road as the student drove past. I believe that was worthy of mentioning as the student approached in relation to what did the student anticipate the driver of the stationary car to do? I certainly agree about the bright sunlight, that was definitely a good talking point especially around consequences. I really did like all the questions from the PDI and I especially liked how he handled the responsibility throughout the drive. I agree that the traffic conditions were too light and as a result did not challenge the student as most junctions she was able to progress with ease. However, my main concern is around the braking and changing gear at the same time. Personally I would have challenged the student as to why she was braking and changing gear at the same time. I would have questioned her on the Hazard Drill and especially the need to get the speed correct by braking BEFORE selecting the correct gear. Furthermore, this is evident on the approach to the RAB's when the student selects 2nd gear, whilst braking, and before she has a view to the right and the opportunity to make an informed decision as to what is the necessary action/gear. The sudden stop at the end may also have been worth questioning. I know this sounds very critical, but I have used this as a learning curve for myself, thank you to both the PDI and student. I loved the PDI's, attitude, his complimentary comments to the student and his overall demeanour. I am sure he will do very well as an ADI.

      Yes agree with your point, brake / gear overlap. I didn't see this as a problem as I thought the braking phase was sorted by the time the clutch engaged, so it was speed / gear in correct order. If it's clear take a gear is a good one to ensure one hazard / one gear employed and no secondary (unnecessary) gear changes. I know some instructors insist on 2nd gear on approach then stop if something is coming. This was more IPSGA. Maybe there were some inconsistencies in her system, but looked pretty good to me. Thanks for watching, I paln to do more when we can get out again. Stay safe Mandy

    surprised there war no comment about verbal instruction, many times the instruction was "turn left at the roundabout", rather than, "at the next roundabout take the first exit proceeding left". The same happened for turning right but not as badly, the presumption was the instructions were for the roundabout that they were approaching, but instruction should be as clear as possible so i can't be misunderstood. Fully agree on the hilux could have been expanded and again, why did it happen, was their vision hampered by the sun? Thought the lesson was a little boring for ability and lacked challenge and lacked explanation of "filtering" on to a busy roundabout, is that gap safe? Encouragement was good however i also thought some questions were asked at the time of high concentration ie part wat around the roundabout, when they could have been asked a few seconds later. Good interaction and teamwork

    Hi Howard...Fantastic teaching video!
    I'm presently a PDI...In regards to the Instructor pulling down his visor...Are you emphasing that the instructor should ask the pupil if their visibility ok, or maybe the pupil was more comfortable without doing this because they did not have sunglasses?
    I'm still not sure what the instructor should have done as part of the risk management
    Many thanks

    • @How-2-drive
      @How-2-drive  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The instructor must be in control and ensure both they and the pupil can see properly at all times.. This includes low sun and dirt on windshield.
      The PDI should have asked if the pupil could see and reminded them to lower their visor. If the pupil could not do this safely whilst on the move, the PDI should have lowered this for her. Alternatively, if the pupil preferred sunglasses they could have pulled up and put them on.
      The instructor should have sunglasses so they can see without their visor down and thus enable them to see their rear view mirror.
      I hope that helps?

    Hi Howard. I don't completely agree with your comments re ' did the pupil get value for money ' Yes the PDI could have made it more testing but correct if I'm wrong but wasn't this the first lesson of RAB's ? If so she did a fantastic job with great instruction. If he had upped the ante I believe its better to let the pupil go off and reflect on the good work they have done and not send them home unhappy knowing that they made mistakes on a more testing RAB. Its very subjective and it always worked for me. Keep up the good video's.

    Great instructor and think the fail is harsh. As a PDI showing the ability to control and achieve learning goals set by both pupil and instructor I think this is a harsh decision to fail based on value for money. Do we not think the lesson felt easy because the instructor was proactive and informative with instruction? I agree the next step would be to make the lesson on roundabouts more advanced however failing him on this is a shame. Mark has a natural ability to teach and I think sometimes we focus to much on the negatives rather that the ability to teach. Again good video and thanks Howard.

      I’m a pdi and I failed my part 3 for exactly that reason. The examiner felt the student was too competent for the subject area and therefore not enough teaching was talking place. So I can understand why it was marked as a fail. However the way the pdi conducted the lesson was very good.

    • @stuarttuckett6983

    Hi Howard, I just watched the pdi’s lesson and your analysis. I wondered whether you would agree the briefing was too long ? I have been taught (I’m a pdi) to regimentally keep it at 3 mins and I think his was about 5 minutes long?
    Thanks in advance!

    • @How-2-drive
      @How-2-drive  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching.. yes for test, no briefings, just a quick recap and set some goals in a client centred way. Briefings should be short, no mor3 than 10 mins to explain a new topic..

    Must admit I personally think a fail was a little harsh. Although should have picked up on visor / visibility. (Even though it didnt seem to effect her.) And should have progressed onto bigger roundabouts. Out of curiosity did he pass his part 3 first time? 😄

    Hi Very very useful video. i am just wondering why did he only managed to get 4 points on lesson planning why not more. if you could please talk about it and explain how those point could be improved.. why was the practice area was not suitable enough and and goals and needs did't met to better level... you video is really great thank you

    • @philwilliams23
      @philwilliams23 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Because the lesson plan wasn't challenging enough and neither was the route. I think it wasn't till 33mins into the video that they actually stopped at their 1st roundabout after doing 20+roundabouts. I really liked the lesson, his style and his delivery. But the sun was definitely an issue. He should have all also adapted the lesson to higher difficult earlier. Great attempt though.

  • @chrisharman6744
    @chrisharman6744 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    he did a pretty decent job of it I thought obviously the sun visor was an issue but i thought it was a worthy effort and definetely thought he should have been awarded higher marks

    • @How-2-drive
      @How-2-drive  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes he's a very capable instructor, but this would fail as the lesson is just too easy, therefore not what the pupil needed, thus not client centred. This is one of the most common reasons for Part 3 failure, wrong lesson for the pupils current needs. This is why we should not plan the test lesson weeks in advance, the lesson before is where you can plan the next required lesson.
      Thanks for watching and commenting, means a lot!

    Seems like some over instruction around gear changing when the pupil approached the roundabouts. Q/A as to what gear would be needed and let the pupil do gear change without instruction, at this stage the pupil should be well capable of gear changing..
