  • The Battle of Little Big Horn is an indelible moment in American history. The shocking defeat became an event that helped shape the nation, and artifacts attached to "The Battle of Greasy Grass" or George Armstrong Custer are museum worthy objects.
This May, Rock Island Auction will offer a Calderwood & Son double action pinfire revolver, that comes straight out of the Custer family, and owned by none other than George Armstrong Custer.

Why isn't this historic firearm in the Smithsonian with Custer's table from Appomattox and his buckskin jacket? The rich get everything.

The only reason some families let go of things is for money. And those rich people that buy them often donate them to museums so that everyone can see them. So save your silly jealous tirades for your next young socialists meeting or something.

Historic relics should be in private hands. Socialism doesn’t work.

I think these sorts of unique artifacts of US history, should go into a national museum.

So should they be seized from the families that own them?

You say that there were a couple of Medal of Honors found at the time that the revolver was discovered. Could those both have belonged to brother Tom? The 1st double recipient of the highest of military honors bestowed upon any American soldier? This makes me very curious! How about you?

They were indeed the medals belonging to Tom Custer. Lt. Colonel Charles A. Custer was very generous in showing the many Custer family items he owned. I saw the two medals, along with several other items, at the Little Big Horn Associates Conference in Monroe, MI in 1978. Lt. Colonel Custer brought them to the conference.

You should have a “guess how much it will sell for” contest. I love seeing the auction clips of famous guns.

John Burkman was GAC's orderly. Not John Ryan.

Thompson was not GAC Orderley. John Burkman was his orderly for years right up until the day Custer died. Thompsons commanding officer was Capt. Thomas Custer. and he was in Company C on the day of the battle. His horse played out and he fell behind and ended up on Reno Hill. He did not serve under Reno prior to the day of the battle and ended up with all the straglers and companies of Benteen and Reno on Reno Hill. In regards to the family farm with Nevin his brother. After Custer was killed Libbie Custer returned and lived at the farm for about a year. She then sold her share of the farm to Nevin for $1.00 and left Monroe. She did not leave the farm and go to live with her mother at all. She certainly did not live at the farm when her father died. He died several years prior to Custer being killed at LBH.

Because he needed a "mans" pistol. Neither of which would have helped him at LBH.
