  • Dr Brian Laing demonstrates two simple home methods of making a sling to support your dog's hind end after a surgery on a back leg such as a cruciate surgery. Prevents slipping and falling or hurting the surgery leg as well as supporting the good leg which is taking all of the weight in the first three days after surgery.

We are in the middle of dealing with cruciate ligament tears on both knees. Thank you for this! I wish we had known about this with the elbow surgery last year

Wow. I was looking for slings on amazon but shipping takes ages and my dog is having surgery in a few days. Thank you so much for these great ideas. ❤️

Thank you for this video! You saved my 55yo back! My best buddy had a collision with his bestie, a 70'lb solid muscle pit(Dean) and threw his back out bad enought to essentailly paralyze his rear legs. After the emergency vet visit, xrays and meds, they observed no permanet damage. But... I was really struggling to help him outside for several reasons(my age, his weight, hes very picky about spots and doesn't like anyone looking at him when he "goes"). This sling idea has him calling the shots and me just help when he needs a little support. It's the little things that make huge differences in health outcomes and our ability to keep them comfortable and allow them to heal. A week after the incident that I feared would result in losing him, he is now on his feet with significant rear leg weakness, but I can see him mending more and more each day. Fingers crossed for Frankie, the worlds most handsome Shar-pitty...

Thank you for the great tip to use a shopping bag. I didn't even think about that. Our dog just had one of his toe amputated and we were struggling to support him with a towel. I was about to go on Amazon to look for a support sling, but I'm so glad I found your video.

Can I make one of those shopping bag slings for my elderly German Shepherd ? He has weakness in his back legs, he sits sometimes eating his food, half sits drinking his water
but when he’s happy he hops on all fours in our house almost running like a rabbit. He’s eating & drinking well, he does have allergies so he gets special diet food from vet, he also gets Synovial GMax and Meloxadin. So I’m thinking he needs some assistance for his hind end perhaps like you have on this video. I was watching another video and I came across yours. Love it. What do you think will it help my boy Rio? He will be 13 years of age in January 2021. He sleeps a lot too. He weighs about 80 lbs. and he’s taken for slow walks daily, and he sits during his walks when he tires, then he continues and no problems.

Johanna Friedt that’s a good age. He will definitely have some arthritis so the sling would help. Especially for things like going up or down a step or stairs. It can help prevent a fall which could hurt him and make things worse.

I assume the sling/bag, doesn’t go all the way far back , on a male dog? For when he pee’s. Or do I make a hole in sling/bag, so he can pee, whilst being supported, all the way back? Thanks

It all looks easy until you have a paralyzed dog that cannot stand up and let you pass anything under the stomach. Also, towels do not work that well, especially with heavier dogs.

So, WHERE through that or, should I say, does HE pee? Or do you have a a different towel or bag for every time you take HIM out? -And HE WILL pee EVERY TIME you take HIM out! You do realize this I take it! LOTS of towel laundry, I see, and I suggest the cloth bags so you can launder them also, or keep throwing them out everytime HE wets them. Recycle bags don't wash well.

Thank you for a great, comprehensive video! My dog will be returning from surgery on 12/22, and I guess the first day or two he will probably not need to go outside as often while he recovers from anesthesia. If I find that we are here together, without any family, what do you suggest for managing both the leash and the Back end support at the same time? It wasn’t clear from your video, since you have a medical assistant.

Thank you for these tips I am going to try both. My little guy is little he weighs 5 pounds so I will modify these to his size. He got a splinter last night on his left hind leg and it drops a lot he has a hard time peeing and he has not pooped yet but hopefully this sling will help. Thank you again
