Ann Sothern - one of the most multi-talented and underrated actresses of the time
I became a huge Ann Sothern fan when I bought the Maisie collection of films. She is just wonderful. I read where she thought she was not a very good actress. I beg to differ with her. She is so wonderful and talented and likable.
I have to be honest. The only film of hers I have in my collection as where she is one of the chorus girls in Footlight Parade.

Ann received her only Oscar nomination in 1988 for The Whales of August. Gene Siskel was so upset about her nomination he said he would "kick his television set in" if she won - she lost to Olympia Dukakis for Moonstruck. She was great in TWOA, which was about to elderly sisters, Lillian Gish and Bette Davis, and Ann was a neighbor/friend of theirs.

Ann Sothern was completely adorable in her sit-coms, starting with "Private Secretary" and "The Ann Sothern Show." She was personable, pleasant, and completely gorgeous.

One of the things I like is how John will call for a "small conference", then come back with an extremely wordy explanation, usually ending with a "NO".

John's sons sure have an excellent role model. He's wonderful! Wish I could have met him.
John mentions a heat wave in New York at 1:45; the high for August 30 was reported as 96°F in the next day's Times.
Ms. Sothern was a take-charge actress and successful business woman with a delightfully charming personality. At one point she had an accident injuring her back which (due to compromised mobility) would not allow her to shed pounds ultimately gained. Her last film was "Whales of August" in which costarred with Lillian Gish and Bette Davis. Her earlier films were on the comedic side, as she performed comedy very well. IM (humble) O, a very lovely lady.
Ann Southern seemed like a very nice lady, and she was a fantastic singer! Her rendition of The Last Time I Saw Paris from 1941 is the best I have ever heard...
On your advice I just TH-cam'd this, and I do agree with you wholeheartedly, as did others noted in the comments section.
I like how John Daly explains the rules of the game to each contestant real quick. Makes most individual segments you’ll find on TH-cam much more accessible to those encountering the program for the first time.
Thank you GSN for these WML videos. Takes me back so many decades. I've always liked this show. Kind of takes me out of the everyday humdrum and allows me to feel young again. Keep it up. Would love to see some old concentration or password episodes.
Ann Sothern was an amazing actress. She was great in comedy and drama... loved her tv series too..I think she had two differently titled series from what I recall....She was wonderful in the The Whales of August.
I loved Ann. Whales of August was an incredible last work of hers. I laughed with her in her Countess role on The Lucy Show. Charmed just charmed.
Ann appeared on occasion as the Countess on The Lucy Show. One 1965 episode had William Frawley in a brief cameo as a horse trainer. It was Frawley's last performance. He died less than a year later.
Ann was extremely smart AND beautiful.
Ann Sothern may be the only mystery guest whose name was misspelled ("Southern") by the network staff.

Not only did they spell her name incorrectly, but they got the occupation of the last challenger incorrect as well, no "tanks" to the hot weather that day I'm sure.

Sad to say there were probably at least a half dozen misspellings of the names on either the name plate or when the name came up on the screen with the occupation or noteworthy accomplishment when they added that. So, Lilly Dache was spelled Lily on the name plate or screen shot and several others that I cannot conjure up at the moment. You are correct that it did happen rather rarely.
I was two days old when this episode was broadcast!
Even with the walk the gauntlet gimmick and the free guesses still a part of the show, WML seems to be settling down quite nicely to become the show we all know and love.

Ah, one other tidbit about Mildred Gilmore from a newspaper article in the Chicago Tribune about her on September 21, 1950. The article describes her as "tall brunette" and "both attractive and brainy." At the time she was married to William Slater. Apparently he was one of the operatives in her agency as well, handling more of the commercial and industrial cases while she dealt more with Hollywood celebrities. An article linked to elsewhere in the comments on this page mentioned that she had quite a bit of success getting information on a person she was tracking by posing as a fortune teller.
She was actually a private detective since her teen years, before she became an attorney as well, according to the article. Whether she was still married in 1953 is unknown, but her profession and her licenses were acquired under her maiden name, so that is how she introduced herself on WML and her agency was the Gilmore Agency.
Interesting, I didnt find her to be attractive. There was a lot of misspeak concerning whether she was a Miss or Mrs. She looked like a man in drag, especially her eyes and Adam's apple. Her voice was unusual for a woman also.

In those years my dad too was a test driver for tanks and other Army vehicles, many which were received via lend lease with the USA. Shermans, halftracks etc. And he too had those movie star looks that make me wonder sometimes if he really is my real dad :)

Adore, Adore, Adore Ann Sothern.
Mr. Cerf almost invariably tries to tie a contestant’s line to what Cerf perceives to be a major industry in that individual’s home city. I have yet to see that strategy pay off for him. (But it does afford him the opportunity to show off his prodigious knowledge, so perhaps that’s what he is really after.)
Much to my regret now, I don't remember watching Ann Sothern on television, and I am old enough to have at least seen some of her shows. I don't recall my parents ever watching the shows that she starred in. Of course, I'm quite glad they didn't watch "My Mother the Car".
She was Lucille Ball's buddy on the Lucy Show.
Actress Ann Sothern (not Southern, as it is misspelled on her plaque) appeared twice more on this show: 5/19/57 and 1/17/65. The former doesn't exist anymore. But the latter does.
In terms of 1953 episodes, only one of them (3/22/53) doesn't exist anymore.
I loved this show, even though I am only seeing it through the Glofy of TH-cam.
Ann Sothern could do a lot of things, and one of the most memorable was her singing the song "The Last Time I Saw Paris", which she did beautifully in the 1941 film _Lady Be Good_. I believe that Eleanor Powell co-starred in Lady Be Good. She was a helluva dancer. Always liked Ann Sothern. I remember her as "The Countess" on The Lucy Show.😂
Regarding the second challenger who was from Chestertown, NY, I would imagine there wasn't much else to do for indoor recreation besides a tavern in that little town in the Adirondacks, especially before the Northway was built less than a mile east of a current upscale bar and grill (perhaps the same place where Miss Vrana worked, although I doubt it was upscale back then) on US 9 just south of its intersection with NY 8. And there isn't much more to Chestertown now (population 677 as of the last census, most of them out in the surrounding countryside, no doubt).

I always find it interesting when I see private detectives on this show. I wonder how it affects their job appearing on national television (since by nature of their job they have to invisible).
I would imagine that the first challenger might dress quite differently when on the job. I can also imagine her on the phone pretending to be a guy as she had a very deep Marlo Thomas type voice. Besides, the glamour of private detective work is grossly exaggerated in novels, movies and television. A lot of it is grunt work. And in the event of needed to follow someone, I can see her blending into the crowd.

John Daly explained that their publicity is very limited on WML when Dorothy asked if a lady detective would have to wear a fake moustache in the future. Some detectives don't need to be so discreet. They may also vary their appearance somewhat before appearing on the show.

The plot of her show:
Ann lived alone in New York City. It would be in the second season where the censors said she'd have to get a roommate! Ann fought against it, but lost!
Ann and Lucille Ball had been close friends. Even Lucy was upset over the change! On "The Lucy Show", a few decades later, Lucy gave Ann the credit she deserved! Saying, as she answered the door, it *"...must be That Girl!"*

Gary, did you catch the fact that the first challenger, Mildred Gilmore, also appeared on YBYL in 1959? It was episode #58-21 (Feb. 12, 1959) and she was part of the first couple, paired with Hugh Langtree who stood 6'9" and dwarfed her. (She stated that she was 5'10½".) Again, she wore a broad-brimmed hat and looked much more than 6 years older compared to 1953.
To follow up on other points brought up in the comments here, she ran her own agency and had other detectives working for her. So by going on these programs, she didn't necessarily defeat her own purpose by becoming too well known.
It is also interesting that absolutely no one commented on her voice on that episode. Her voice generally was a bit more feminine on YBYL, but at one point is very high pitched and natural. Maybe her pitch was affected by a cold or some other throat irritation when she did WML, and being from Los Angeles, she might not have been able to hang around for another week.
It also occurs to me that as part of her profession, she may have deliberately emphasized the lower part of her vocal register to appear more capable, able to be on equal footing with the guys, so to speak. Just think of the main premise for a show that started airing nearly 30 years after this episode of WML aired, Remington Steele. I can tell you for a fact that shortly after I began my career as a stockbroker in 1983 (a year after Remington Steele began and 30 years after this episode of WML), I decided to use a lower pitch to give my voice more gravitas. And I did fairly well in the business for a time. I do believe that it paid a part in the success. The other successful female brokers were all well into the alto range.
Oh Gary, no charge if I was able to get some newcomers to mosey over to your other channel to view that episode of "You Bet Your Life" and maybe get hooked on another of your channels. I won't share how she and her partner did on the quiz, but her interaction with Groucho was delightful, well worth the watch. I will only share that the final question was related to an MG on WML close to a year earlier than this episode.

Good catch, Lois! I don't remember if I knew that this contestant was on YBYL, but if I did, it's only because someone pointed it out to me. I've never noticed this sort of thing on my own, but I know from other people's comments that there were a couple of crossover contestants between WML and YBYL. There were a LOT more crossovers between WML and TTTT, seeing as they were produced by the same company. A member of the WML community, Miriam Feigenbaum, put together what seems to be a pretty comprehensive list of the WML/TTTT crossovers and sent it to me last year.
Heads up for the future that as of today, TH-cam just completely revamped how the comments notifications work, which means that it's going to be literally impossible for me to keep up with comments from now on. Thank you, TH-cam! As if it wasn't hard enough already-- you've now made it literally impossible.

It boggles my mind how so many websites take something that works well, tosses it in the dumpster, and replaces it with something far inferior ... all in the name of justifying their programmer salary I presume. GoComics, another favorite site of mine, just made their site more difficult to navigate in one click as well as much harder to comment on.
And You Tube and Google in their various aspects are often totally illogical to me in the way they present or organize items, as well as trying to reply. Until today, it was very easy to click on the new comment notifications and reply directly there. A "+" and the first letter of another poster's name made it easy to reply back to that person in the thread. No more. Clicking on it brings you right back to this page and the entire name of the poster has to be typed after the plus sign.
Anyway, don't worry Gary. I won't be offended if you fail to reply. I'm used to being ignored. Okay Gary? *Gary?* *GARY?* :-)
As far as the good catch, that was simply because I was curious about Miss Gilmore, both because of her profession and in light of some of the other comments made about her. Doing a Google search of her name (at least one thing Google is good for), I came up with links for her YBYL appearance in 1959. I checked to see if you had posted the episode and there she was. The regular Google search and a Google image search turned up a few other nuggets as well that I posted.
Yup, though to be honest, the comments system was terrible already. The revamping just made it totally unusable, from the perspective of a channel owner. It used to be that I could catch up with comments on my own time, marking them read as I got to them. Sometimes I'd be as much as a couple of weeks behind, but I always caught up eventually. Now, you can't mark any comments as read, really. Whether you've read them or not, they'll still appear only in chronological order in the notifications. This means, if I'm unable to keep pace for a while, which is common, I'll have no way of knowing which comments I've read, and I can't whittle down the list. Not only that, but I have to actually load the video page for almost every individual comment now in order to read them in full, because unless they're really short, they're all cut off after a few lines. Replies to comments are the worst, because now they're presented totally out of context, so in order to have any idea what anyone is even responding to, I have to load the whole video page. For each and every reply. Who could have possibly thought this was a good idea???

I guess John didn't know that "Private Secretary" Ann Sothern's show, which had just started a few months earlier was also on CBS. However, In an unusual move, Private Secretary also had two brief runs on another network. During the summers of 1953 and 1954, reruns from the recent season were shown on NBC as a summer replacement for Your Hit Parade, with the series resuming new shows on CBS each fall. That is strange, even then, I think, for a current series to rerun on another network. I guess that explains John's misunderstanding. Does anyone know why the show would run on CBS during the regular season and NBC in the summer? Are there other examples?
"Ensign O'Toole," a sit-com that starred Dean Jones, aired prime-time on NBC during the 1962-63 season. Reruns of the show aired on ABC during March through August 1964.

At 24:05 John Daly tells the viewers that "We made a mistake" in telling them the last contestant's occupation. Did he see this on a sign? He seems to look up twice as if there is a sign on the other side of the stage.
"Miss Gilmore sometimes does it outside too"! Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.
On the final guest they showed the audience the wrong line. This is the only time I've ever seen that happen. I wonder if it ever happened again

I've got a question about something this show did a month later, and I wonder if epaddon could answer my question:
On September 27, 1953, this show did a special Community Chest Drive edition. It aired simultaneously on all the major networks in the daytime. A copy of this special turned up on eBay in 2009. My question is, was this the only time the show did a special program on all of the major networks, outside of the regular primetime run?
I would assume so because I've never heard of anything like that before or since. That was something that could only happen in the early days of TV.

Ann Sothern's real name was Harriet Lake. Her name was changed so as not to be confused with actress Veronica Lake. She chose Ann, and her her last name was taken chosen from a famous Shakespearean actor whom she admired named Harry Sothern. I have been a fan of Ann Sothern for many years.

I think when the question "can this product be purchased in a drugstore, John's visage took a curious turn. He seemed ready to question the "No" answer given by the contestant. No wonder, I have always seen beer in drugstores in the states. I would think so in 1953 as well.
The liquor laws vary from state to state as well as from time to time, so it's not surprising that there might be different views on this topic. During Prohibition, one of the few legal places to buy liquor was in a drugstore, with a doctor's prescription.
Or a religious exemption. Or a number of other ways to use the system and get alcohol.

I would presume an obvious difference between a "barmaid" and a "bartender"; the former simply serves alcohol to customers, the latter mixes or pours it in the glass. I wonder why Mr. Daly allowed Mr. Allen the benefit of the doubt on this one!
Yes, there is a clear difference but maybe John Daly never had been in a bar. :)
Out of curiosity I looked up the definition of "barmaid" in the dictionary and while the most acceptable definition is "waitress in a bar" an acceptable definition is that of "female bartender" so technically John Daly was correct in allowing Steve Allen the benefit of the doubt.

John Daley had 4 sons; I think. He named all of them John.
Yes, you are correct. He did have four sons and two daughters. Married twice he had two sons and one daughter with each wife. All of the sons were named John (John Neale, John Charles, John Warren and John Earl-born in that order). His daughters were Helene Grant and Nina Elizabeth.

I think this is an example of how the language changes through a decade or two, no matter which country, it's a world-wide phenomenon.
Bennett Cerf in particular persisted in using that pronunciation for some time. A professor of mine said the correct pronunciation of the Ang- in Los Angeles was the same as the -ang in hang (i.e., as pronounced by Cerf), but I never asked him why he felt that way.
The first episodes of the show appeared in the early days of TV, and at that time I don't think anyone felt comfortable in front of the camera. But in addition to that fact, they may have been afraid that any episode at that point in the program's career was going to be their last, and that is a difficult feeling with which to be at ease! As they gained experience in TV and as they felt the assurance that the public liked the show, they became more natural in their comportment. John Daly was awful in the earliest episodes.
romeman01 Yes, this theme has been brought forth before on these sites, and in particular Bennett's pronunciation of "Los Angeles". My theory then, and still is, that in this form, the "g" came closest to the origin of the name in Spanish. I also think that originally in USA, they spelled "colour" like this, and not "color" as now. To me, who was taught British English at school, it's sometimes confusing with all these forms of English, because I'm not always sure, if I spell something wrong, or if it's simply American ;) (English is not my first language, and I'm still learning) I wouldn't say Daly was "awful" in the earliest episodes, but everything was a bit awkward in the beginning, like all beginnings are, no matter which field. When the right team was settled, and with some practice, it all went on smoothly.
SuperWinterborn It has always irritated me that people, including Mayor Sam Yorty, would mispronounce the name of the city, and I don't even live there. I'm about 40 miles east, and I can say Los-an-gel-less.I think now that the Hispanic population has greater recognition the correct pronunciation is almost always used.

Would the studio have been air-conditioned?
It certainly could have been as mechanical air conditioning goes back to 1902 and started to become more widespread in the 1920's. The problem in television production would have been noise: how much vibration noise would there have been from the motor and the air conditioning unit itself (unless it was perfectly seated somewhere. There also would have been fan noise as that is needed to circulate the air. So unless the noise problem could be overcome, those in the studio would have to tough it out. And kudos to the makeup people for keeping the panelists and John Daly looking fresh and without perspiration. Maybe they used Stopette all over their face!
My assumption is that the challengers wouldn't be under the studio lights as long and that they could stay in an air conditioned green room when not on the air. And the area where the studio audience might have been air conditioned with machinery far enough from the microphones that it wasn't picked.
While I was never under television studio lights, I am told that they were indeed quite toasty, especially in those days.

Funny how people in the 1950s and before used to say Angle-es instead of angel-es for Los Angeles ( with a hard g instead of a soft g). I wonder when it changed and the soft g became the 'correct' pronunciation.
