  • As the US continues to grapple with issues of race, history is proving to be an invaluable tool to underscore and discuss uncomfortable truths still governing the difficult dynamics of race in America.
How can history help us face and overcome such uncomfortable truths? How can history help slay our ignorance?
Drew Gilpin Faust interviews Bryan Stevenson, Founder and Executive Director of Equal Justice Initiative
    Aspen Ideas Festival 2016

Bryan's spirit is so real, honest emerging with ideas not blame, possibilities instead of retribution and real historical narrative instead of "false narratives." Thank you, Bryan, for commitment to turning a new page in our American lives and offering patience, possible solutions and emerge with encouragement for each person to be all she/he is capable of being. Your demeanor and soul are refreshing. Your grandmother is looking down and smiling with joy and hugs.

Nice of you to offer your standards of comfort for black people to adhere to when expressing their hurt, anger and disdain for the 400 years of tyranny and oppression they’ve sustained. Very thoughtful of you.

I wonder if Mr. Stevenson has heard of the Whitney Plantation in Louisiana? It is a museum about slavery started by a white man named John Cummings. It's a step in the right direction, but I think we need a national slavery museum in DC, not just the African American History Museum.

Brian Stevenson provides a very powerful and compelling presentation here, but I wonder his reaction to the "Cress Theory of Color Confrontation and White Supremacy!!!"

Always timely! Automatically registered to vote at 18! Bring back the GI Bill for those Black Veteran families. Yes and start with reparations like the GI Bill plus a real US history in all schools from k-12 plus college. Fully repair..

I think Bryan Stevenson could get intouch with Berny Glassman and the Zenpeacemakers who organize a " bearing Witness retreat in Auchwitz every year in november where people of all religions and walks of life and different countries gathered and make a few days retreat together : You could meet someone like Sami Awad who is Palestinian Christian ( you can see his video on youtube , on global oneness where he speaks of the fact that as soon as he comes close to any border he is not seen as anything else but what his passport says : Palestinian , and the two videos he gave to friends in Israêl when he was meditating in Auschwitz and would see groups of Israeli teens coming wrappled in their flag , and hearing their teachers tell those kids about to enter in the army within few years : " what your grand -parents , or great uncle or ant went through here , .....Palestinians are ready to so the same to You ! "...... Young Israëli soldiers just released from the army created at " bear Witness page " where the speak of their regrets and shame to have been forced to wake up and scare Palestinian families in the middle of the night for no reason or to take their 14 years away ....so if people united all around the world they will counter balance the agressive politics of their governments that leads to wars and destructions , millions of death , hatred, terrorism , refugees and all these nationalist people jumping on extrem solutions . ....As a french , i was also shoked , when I once received the magazine of Redlands University in California , my dual -national daughter was attending , and found a photo inside of an 11 years old little girl holding a 9mm Luger having just won a shooting competition ! ...Bellow was an article of a Teacher having received an award for saving ..animals ' lives . ....and on an other page was the picture of a Fresco , some of Redlands university had participated in painting on a lowal WMCA 's frontpiece representing a " Perfect World " representing people of all sifferent colors , origins and backgrounds ....so i wrote to the editor of the magazine , asking him : " Who the hell in that Perfect World this 11 years old was training to shoot ???? " ( sorry for any misspelling , please excuse my french as people say it USA ( which shoked me the first time I heard it was what people would say ...after using some slang word ! So now I enjoy saying it as a joke ! Don't give up ! Your feet are well grounded ! Congratulations ! It is bringing fresh air , as they say in germany ( Germans love Frishe Luft ! ) ...seeying and hearing a person like You in such world were people fell obliged to stand up and applaud rotten leaders , politicians when not some " religious " not so clear beings just for their power and social or religious position !

Until the U.S owns its sin, there will be no reconciliation, and that's not only sad, but dangerous.

@@trustyshellback stop using this narrative. Because from 1865 to 1970 this country made LAWS to keep Black people down. This country didn't live up to what they put on paper. Dr. King said, "Just be true to what you said on paper." It's not about democrats or Republicans. It's about right and wrong. SLAVERY, SEGREGATION OR APARTHEID WAS WRONG, PERIOD!

@@trustyshellback It was the law of the land applied by the American government and upheld by American Supreme Court. A law applied to only one group.(Blacks) So try again. This is want I mean, your country will never heal from it's past if you don't come to grip with SLAVERY, SEGREGATION OR APARTHEID were just wrong. No excuses. If you keep trying to place blame, it's clear that this country wants to continue to live it's hypocritical legacy. STOP!!! SAY IT WITH ME AS DR LAWSON HAS SAID, "YOU ALL KNEW THOSE SIGNS & LAWS WERE WRONG." We will never be able to move on, until we accept our responsibility for some terrible history. Stay woke!!
