When it comes to drugs - Do Not Abolish the death penalty. However, those found guilty must be accorded every opportunity to avail themselves of the offense if they believe to be innocent. There's no point trying to be 'nice' knowing the devastation and proliferation narcotics can cause in any society. People claiming Amnesty International and the UN Declaration of Human Rights - the moment anyone is trafficking drugs - knowing full well the damage they are causing to people's lives - have forfeited their rights to such human rights.

Singapore is known for this law. You have the freedom of choice not to smuggle in drugs, yet you took the risk. So, blames who? When having strict law in this could only minimise the violations, what good or situation will arise if it gets lenient?

Anyone who possesses 15g of diamorphine or 30g of morphine are presumed to be a drug trafficker and the death penalty will be imposed. International standards restrict the application of the death penalty to intentional murder, and less than half of countries that retain the death penalty in law or in practice execute for drug offences. The United Nations Office for Drugs and Crime, the very agency responsible for enforcing global prohibition of illicit drugs, acknowledged in 2015 that international drug policy based on criminal punishment has created a “lucrative and violent black market”. It is widely accepted among drug policy experts that the global war on illicit drugs has failed, with devastating consequences for individuals and societies around the world.
Instead of disrupting drug cartels, capital drug laws in practice often operate to punish those who are typically recruited from marginalized groups with intersecting vulnerabilities, and who are easily replaced if arrested. The current evidence on the deterrent effect of the death penalty for drug trafficking is too weak to demonstrate effectiveness. In addition, the Singaporean public does not appear to be clamoring for the retention of the death penalty for drug trafficking. Whom and what purpose the death penalty serves in Singapore remains unanswered.

Singapore 's drug law is the gold standard for the world. But SG does have a problem with one privileged drug - alcohol. Alcohol abuse is treated leniently here. Health related treatments drag down our medical resources. Road accidents by drunk drivers kill innocent victims, but the culprits get a mere 2 yrs jail time. A 16 yr old underaged boy was sentenced to 16 yrs jail for killing his schoolmate. This anomaly can only be explained by the powerful alcohol lobby in the PAP. All the bosses n executives of beer n liquor businesses are members of the PAP.

Not all drugs classified under "Drug " deserve capital punishment.
Especially those drug that are legalised by more than one country. If it is truly harmful, why should these countries legalised them to harm their own people? If it is lesser harm, y is Singapore still classified them undèr capital punishment?

For those who advocate abolishing death penalty based on inhumane reasons maybe also try work on abolishing colonialism and wars! Example in Palestine now which is more inhumane! Do we see amnesty international condemnation of the war and crackdown of the peaceful students protestors?

  • @martinbrock713

The use of the death penalty for crimes committed by people younger than 18 is prohibited under international human rights law, yet some countries still resort to the death penalty in these situations. Such executions are few compared to the total number of executions recorded by Amnesty International each year.

Amnesty International holds that the death penalty breaches human rights, in particular the right to life and the right to live free from torture or cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment. Both rights are protected under the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted by the UN in 1948.

Singapore will lose the war on drugs. Criminalizing drug does not help with reducing crime, on the contrary it aggravates crimes. Criminalization of drug reduces the supply, which results in increase price for drug. This provides greater incentive for drug syndicates to bring drugs into the country through black market. They bring crimes along with their illegal activities. Therefore, the current situation with drug related crimes is the direct consequence of Singapore's laws on drugs. The laws have unintended consequences and Singapore must change course.
Instead, Singapore should decriminalize some drugs and control the sale of those drugs. This would deprive drug syndicates the incentive to bring in drugs together with their criminal activities. The controlled sale of drugs can generate additional revenue for the state. Also, users can have better consumer protection. This is a better approach to the war on drug.
Do not trust PAP. Do not vote PAP. PAP does not know how to fight the war on drug. FYI, weed is a natural plant with many health benefits.
