REDEMPTION SONG At the end of the initiation, past midnight, The Comforter stood up for the first time since he sat there on his throne from midday and declared the initiates were beyond the reach of the devil which came in the form of witchcraft and spiritual possession. The Comforter’s children never prayed in tongues; were beyond the spell of witchcraft and all other emotional ills. The newcomers stood up and shouted “hallelujah” like those who came to the movement before them. He warned them to stay away from ancestral worship, consumption of pork products and desist from evil forces of greed, lust, vengeance and the rest. To demonstrate the powers vested in him he called on all men among new-comers who came infested with pubic lice to get to the front. To his surprise about twenty or so young and possibly five middle aged men went and stood in front of the stage, just before the throne. If any person who knew how to placate anyone to feel equal, it was The Comforter. He switched to some street language prevalent in townships of South Africa, joking at how they got the infestation. He asked them to run to the toilets to check if those lice were still with them. In less than ten minutes all came back laughing to themselves to declare the lice had disappeared. The lice were a product of sleeping around, The Comforter told the new-comers, and making promises of marriage which were never kept. The jilted lover came from all walks of life; some had evil knowledge and skills, others consulted medicine men to cast spells on the cheater. The lice were a punishment from those with evil knowledge. Not only lice but there were countless men and women who were ‘married’ to invisible spouses who came only at night to torment them. They lost those evil husbands immediately they set foot at the branch where the journey to The Comforter’s seat started. Extreme cases needed The Comforter himself. The Word! “From today onwards, you are beyond reach of the spells of evil spread by witches!” A rapturous applause followed, more from the new-comers than existing members. “Go and love your enemies; how can you see God if you love only those who love you? Forgive their debts as the good Lord has forgiven yours. You were given for free, go and give freely too!” were his closing remarks and the curtain closed on the service. The pair turned and looked at each other with surprise. The service for September 1987 came to an end in the early hours of Sunday morning.
