Is the Tanto the "Ultimate Knife"?

  • Third in a series about the Japanese art of tantojutsu. This one deals with whether the tanto is the ultimate knife as some have tried to call it. We lost a few seconds of sound due to the wind. I don't think it is very important to the overall information covered. I hope this helps people understand the reality of this Japanese art.

the purpose of tanto is to hide its purpose which makes it better than any sword or knife weapon,,,,you can use it for cooking. 😄

I really don't see why this is such a big debate. The geometric strength and rigidity of the Tanto point's design makes it the superior shape for stabbing. Sure the drop point and spear point are both also very strong, but the Tanto has the advantage of being based on the strongest shape of all: The Pyramid.
Edit: This comment refers to the Tanto point style in general. Not just the Japanese Tanto dagger.

Japanese tanto is basically a stylized drop point with training tip.
You're thinking of "Americanized" tanto, which is a badly designed chisel-tip with less strength than a single beveled chisel, let alone a drop point or even sheephoof tip

Why do people say there Japanese? Didn't the Vikings use the same kind of blade?

You'd be thinking of a seax, though I'm sure knives with similar shapes to a tanto existed. The difference would be that it'd be replicating a tanto, and based on a tanto.

@CLB Ronin as a multi purpose knife the Bowie wins. For fighting, a dagger or tanto is better

      It comes down to context.
What are you doing with your knife , what do you need to use your knife for, what kind of combat situations do you face.
FS daggers were made and used in WW1 & WW2 they were slender daggers majority with around 7" blade with dual edges, they were used in 1-1 combat and to sneak up on foes. Slender & pointy enough to slide through ribs and trench coats yet small enough to conceal. They could give nasty slashes if sharpened properly , they could be used to cut materials, and foods, but you can not battan with it, nor pry , open ammo cans etc. But killing was its strong suit.
Kukri blade used and carried by Gurkhas in WW1 - WW2 period (still some carry today) but that was used more like a machete , had a 12 - 13" wide blade , could chop human limbs off and cut through small trees, and clear pathways. This weapon would shine in combat scenarios where you are not breathing distance from your enemy as you could generate power and create distance , coming in for a ferricious kill.
Although the FS is small compared to the Kukri , if you were to be body to body close in a combat scenario you would probably prefer the FS over the Kukri.
However, if you had distance in a combat scenario then you would probably go for the advantages of the Kukri over the FS.
My point is Bowie, Kukri, Dagger, Tanto, or sword, depending on design and scenario everything has pros and cons. Thinner pointier blades can pierce flesh better as there is less material in contact , however can damage easier as it's mass / material is less. No matter the blade design it is all about what is fit for purpose. Bowie knives differ in design some are pointier others are broader , some are very thick others thin, some curved , some straight, some dual edges some single.
As long as a blade has its strengths and is used towards those strengths they usually fulfill the task or purpose at hand, as that was its intended design. You wouldn't fight a 16 century European armoured knight up close and personal with a Bowie knife you would use a reinforced dagger and you wouldn't need a reinforced dagger in a modern combat scenario where people do not wear steel armour, you might use a Bowie for all purpose tasks in the modern world whereas a dagger wouldn't be very good for all purpose tasks today.
