Love these guys. They look like they teleported from different eras to play rock music together. Husker Du: a donut salesman, a homeless cowboy dad, and a glamorous pirate.
It was in front of the Hennepin County Government Bldg in Downtown Mpls. Everyone I hung out with was just TORCHED from the night before- we hadn't gone to sleep and just partied until the show- afterwards we ended up in the Uptown Bar with Bloody Marys and more coke. What a night/morning! Back when Minneapolis was fun!
Without Big Black there would be no Nirvana, without the Huskers, no Nirvana. It's the diff between Cobain and Grohl. And without The Ramones there wouldn't be ANY of them.
thanks for the post. I can't believe he cut off Husker Du. Then again, I can't believe Husker Du was playing to this crowd. Did you see grandma gettin' down?
I'm seeing Bob Mould tonight as part of a comedy variety show in San Francisco, don't really know what to expect but psyched. He also DJs post-punk, shoegaze and psychedelic music sometimes at a bear bar called Lone Star here in the city. You go Bob.
I skipped out on class too! The way I remember it they asked the band to shorten a song or two and stop playing... The old lady in the audience was out dancing when the Husker's put on an impromptu concert after the show was done taping. It was really early in the morning, but I remember a good size crowd, dough nuts and special export.
I remember taping this off of NBC, I think there was also a break where they did their version of the Mary Tyler Moore theme, which had been a b-side on SST. (And that last song is Everytime, a b-side written by Greg Norton, a relative rarity in the HD catalogue.)
Thank you for the reminder. I was there I climbed a tree and watch the show from up there. It wasn't really a show they did two or three songs and I remember the Mary Tyler Moore theme and a lot of waiting around between songs. the only time ever got to see the band
It is a shame that Green Day is making millions while some Husker Du members died off and some are getting by on solo albums. A little something to think about if capitalism truly does reward the innovators!
Before anybody makes a comment about the jerk who didn't like this video, I want to say that I am that jerk, and that I pressed the dislike button by mistake. (For real.) Great clip.
There was a big scene turnout but the Today Show wasn't going to focus on a bunch of drunk and coked out hipsters so to speak. I know because I was one of them. Good Times.
@boliverful1 I know it's just me and my hilarious humor. I was being twisted you know. Green Day ripped off or was heavily influenced by Husker Du. Either way I like them both -though Husker Du is a bit less polished which I like more. Am I being confusing?
How could the Twin Cities not recognise greatness when they saw it? What an awful place to be from. HD would have been major if they didn't come from lame old Prince town!
Ok this might be a reply to a year old post but fuck it. Bro everyone loves trolling but classic music come on. LOL ur 2 cool bro. Husker Du influenced The Pixies,Nirvana, and a lot of indy/alternative/punk groups. In fact the whole 90's era wouldn't have happened . Oh and lets not forget Dinorsaur fucking Jr and Sebadoh. As for your poppy mainstream punk that you speak of actually took (or should i say tried) to take there whole style from Jawbreaker but made it into complete shit. :P
P i a n o R e e v e s I'm replying to a 4 year old question, so no worries. when somebody asked Nirvana about their sound, I believe it was Krist that said "he haven't done anything that Husker Du hasn't already done."
P i a n o R e e v e s Pretty much. Looking at 90s rock music, it was heavily influenced by the two punk rock bands from the Twin Cities (one being Hüsker Dü, the other the Replacements).
Love these guys. They look like they teleported from different eras to play rock music together. Husker Du: a donut salesman, a homeless cowboy dad, and a glamorous pirate.
I would buy a donut from Bob and go sailing with Grant any time. :) (well, can't with Grant anymore, but...)

@@theunrealtimemmwhat about Greg? Haha
That's a pretty good assessment. 💙✌️🗽
Thanks for posting this. Without Husker Du, Nirvana and the Pixies would be nothing.

Cowboy hat+ fingerless gloves+awesome bass skills= awesome
Let's not forget that 'stache.
Greg Norton is one of the most talented bassists of all time.
1 : 29 That old lady made my week... Dü rocks !
❤💯❤️
First time I cut school was to go there!
Seems like a good reason to cut school. I wish I was able to see them live.
Skipped work to see this live ;)
I watched everything which is like three songs with a lot of waiting from up in one of those trees that I'd climbed above the crowd
Just what I needed today.
After The Who, one of my favorite bands of all time. And on the Today Show--even Grandma is rocking out! Mahalo!
Man I love Greg's singing voice for every time!
this song, this record sort of changed my life
thanks for the post. I can't believe he cut off Husker Du. Then again, I can't believe Husker Du was playing to this crowd. Did you see grandma gettin' down?
Husker Dude is one of my favorites he's cool.
That's pretty good sound for an outdoor performance! If we knew who the engineer was, we'd want to thank them!
I was at this performance.
Where was it? Year?

Qualquer performance do Hüsker Dü é cheia de nostalgia. Não sei porque...
I met grant outside the phantasy theater on warehouse tour. I remember he was wearing a leather trenchcoat.
Apparently Bryant Dumbel did not approve of Bobs guitar solo....

And cocaine. WHAT A MORNING! I met my first husband the night before at the CC Club!!!! Crazy.
Lots of people in bands are gay. There's something great about people not living up to the stereotypes.
THE GREATEST. SINCE NOW.
Awesome memory!
so cool...thanx......a show for the local TV.
You just don't cut off Husker Du in the middle of a song. Not Cool.
And, they were playing Norton's great song on the outro.
I remember taping this off of NBC, I think there was also a break where they did their version of the Mary Tyler Moore theme, which had been a b-side on SST. (And that last song is Everytime, a b-side written by Greg Norton, a relative rarity in the HD catalogue.)

@@thumbprintn2413That's amazing, how lucky that you got to see that!
Ah thanks, I've had this on audio for the last 10 years but have never seen the video portion before.
this is awesome
It is a shame that Green Day is making millions while some Husker Du members died off and some are getting by on solo albums. A little something to think about if capitalism truly does reward the innovators!
30Flambeau which one died off? Richie Du, DeeDee Du, or Scooby Du?
Grant died, but only like two months ago.
today-this, now I felt Husker Du.1st time
Grant's hair is the best part
alway. I mean, the music's pretty good too but I love that hair love that guy
After The Who, one of my favorite bands of all time. And on the Today Show! Hah!

WTH! The damn show didn't let them finish their song on air! Damn!
that is goddamn hilarious god love the 80s
Please men, got someone the full show??
Not quite the audience to appreciate their music.
There was a big scene turnout but the Today Show wasn't going to focus on a bunch of drunk and coked out hipsters so to speak. I know because I was one of them. Good Times.
1 part Village People 1 part Gem and the Holograms 1 part Bob Mould
1:27 - I like-a this kind-a hot kind-a MUUUUUUSIC
The old couple in the audience - is that the "grandma's freakin' over the attention" from "Flip You Wig"?
Bryant Gumbel & Husker Du...rad.
why they cut the transmition in the solo of Bob? wtf
That sucks
Great story...I was in 4th grade at the time out in Crystal, so I didn't make it. :(
sounds just like their recorded sound.
Shit, they cut off "Anytime"!
Check out Greg sporting a cowboy hat!
Today show?? Hey edna from iowa turned 98 and now here's some postpunk brilliance for ya and a high of 78 degrees in des moines.
WOOOOW they played "everytime"??? where can I get the studio/demo version???
Elizabeth ryuu where is that demo version or studio version ?????????
the today show?
yees, that always pissed me too
Warner Brothers keeps on taking it down. The one I had up had about 200,000 views, but the bastards took it down any way . . .
tanx !!!!!!!!
You have it in reverse.
I like how Bob describes their sound as "popular music." Wishful thinking. I'm convinced that handlebar moustache cost them millions in record sales.
The standard joke was that "They were a 3-piece band and half of them were gay"
@boliverful1 I know it's just me and my hilarious humor. I was being twisted you know. Green Day ripped off or was heavily influenced by Husker Du. Either way I like them both -though Husker Du is a bit less polished which I like more. Am I being confusing?
WHAT A F*****G BAND
How could the Twin Cities not recognise greatness when they saw it? What an awful place to be from. HD would have been major if they didn't come from lame old Prince town!
Somebody has no idea about the TC.
è questo che abbiamo perso
do you mean the ones at 1:30? Look a little old to be parents of either of them but maybe not.
freeze at 1:20 our tribe
GRANT HART
@30Flambeau Green Day came WAY after Husker Du. If anything, Green Day was d off. :)
Bryant Gumbull... get out of the business... he comes unprepared with his condescending questions. HUSKER DU RULES !!!!
you do realize this happened 30 years ago, right?
Yes, but Bryant Gumbull is still the worst in the business. SCIENTIFIC FACT
well that sucked!!! i wanted to hear the rest of the guitar solo god damn it!
Westerberg wouldnt put up with being cutoff!
yer joking right? how could a band that started in 1980 rip off a band that started in 1990?
Started in ‘79..
1:28
Fuck Husker Du were cool !!!
@30Flambeau
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Shit was soo bad they cut them off lol
love this band - and in retrospect they are so obviously gay!
Wtf 😅
They totally ripped off Green Day
Green day started getting more famous in the 90s and this the 80s
Around where they started
