I learned this trick from an old gaffer: You can use a person's glasses to hide a LAV. It pickups up and hides well as long as the wire is secured to the inside of the stem (or arms?). Works especially well with thicker rim glasses. 👓
Dude, this came at just the right time for me. I watched this video couple weeks ago right before I was about to start filming a short. I'm editing now and syncing the lapel mics that I taped to our chests and it is SO AWESOME to know I'm going to have very minimal voice overs to do in post. THANK YOU!!

I was always scared of clothing ruffle when mic-ing someone up, but never tried just padding it with tape! I thought about padding it with cotton balls but that creates a bulge and I think it would still scrape over the mic as it's not fixed to the mic but would rather be sandwiched between the skin and the cotton, which is why I never bothered to try. Thank you so much for this video, I'll definitely be trying these methods soon!

Moleskin is the way to go. You should try the rode wireless go. I think it would adapt very well to your style of audio placement.

I started last year with yt & my sound was terrible, still sometimes is because I have only 1 & the recording sometimes turns off. However, one problem is when I speak is that the mic gets the noise from my clothing. The clap is sometimes not clear. I ask a sound engineer to set my camera sony alpha6000 but impossible. This video helps a lot.

Moleskin sandwich is a very common method for audio professionals. Just make sure its a good strong adhesive. Also nice a cheap solution for the starter sound guy.

btw. a thing to know is polar pattern consistency. even omnidirectional mics have more highs where you point them to so at 0° and loose highs at 180° so yeah i just wanted to say that you can also hear that in your own video at 0:40
Another great vid! I'm wondering do they use lavalier mics in films/soap operas when doing wide long shots or do they do ADR? It's the one thing I can't seem to find any solid info on but I see it a lot in a soap opera we have in the UK where they do wide long shots of two (or more) people talking and there's no way they could use a boom mic without getting the boom operator in shot. My only guess is that they either use lav mics or they do ADR.

great tips. how do you suggest putting a mic on someone teaching a jiu jitsu instructional? shotgun mic or lav?
I once hid a lav mic in the lapel button hole on a black suit jacket. It was a shadowy film noir and it never showed on camera, but it was a standard def short film. Might be different in HD. We were having problems with a very sensitive wireless condenser mic on a boom, so, the wireless lav fixed everything.

Thanks for the insight Darious! I saw some vampire clips on the B&H Photo online store. I really am interested to try them as a permanent solution and then keep the tape as a backup in case the clips don’t work in the situation. If you get a chance to try them let me know how it works out.
I'm trying to make a bathtub scene from my sitcom I'm making I was wondering how I'll hide the lavalier mic when I'm in the bathtub? I don't have a boom mic
Another really good trick for talent with long hair (and depending on the lav) is you can hide the capsule in their hairline and then you can run the cable through the hair and down the neck. Just will want to make sure you are coodinating with the Hair and makeup departments if you are using this method as not to mess up each other's work.
Best spot for a mic on the chest is actually a bit lower down at the base in between the pecs, hides it better and still sounds great.
3M transpore tape and mole skin are solid low cost options 👊😉
Do you have a good method for removing tape residue from the mic? Moleskin worked great but I'm not sure what I can use to clean the mic safely afterwards.
Very creative. Have you ever run out of recorders/batteries and ended up using a smartphone to mic up an extra actor? What were the results and would you recommend it if people don't have the money to get a Zoom/external recorder?
Nice tips! It's surprising just how much useful things you can find in the corner drug store. Medical tape and moleskin are always part of my gig bag--as are sharpies, masking tape, etc. etc. etc.
when you use the topstick tape, do you still put a piece of medical tape on top of the mic?

With frames that big (assuming they're dark color), you can attach the lav on the inside of one of the temples (the side pieces of the frame). For stereo, one mic on each of the temples. Not that I've ever done this for bootleg taping, of course.

Off topic but i need expert advice. Would you recommend a Panasonic - HC-VX870K 4K Ultra HD Flash Memory Camcorder - to shoot a indie film?
Darius depending on the lavs you have hide-a-mics are great. They even make for them with bra clips, keep in mind though you would need the Sanken COS 11’s or the DPA 4060’s or 4070’s. The football triangles I really don’t recommend because it’s never worked for me nor other sound mixers. Another good tool to have is a chest strap for very hairy actors. My go to chest Straps and Straps in general are the URSA Straps and the Viviana Straps Extreme line. As there also other items like URSA Foamies that are fantastic.

Hey just a quick question, why didn't you get a large diaphragm mic, something like the Beyerdynamic M160, instead of that shotgun you have in front of ur mouth?

Friend shot a military horror/ thriller short, hid the mics under the actors scarves to account for them wearing gas masks. Still wasn’t very good but better than nothing

You can probably buy a generic lav clip and see it your lav fits. I rarely use the clips.
I bought 5 clips. Generic. But i cannot get it on the lav. I just dont know how 😂😂😂
