I have to say, this is one of the best videos I've seen on TH-cam showing the role of the fireman on the footplate and during pre-tip tasks! Explaining parts of the locomotives very well with great videography to go with it. Connecting the dots between one task and what to consider next. This video is great for those who want to get a better idea of how these machines actually work. Very well done!
Another well done video. Having visited there from the states, I can say it is a well run organization with talented people. I myself having worked in steam preservation for decades, and I can assure you it’s also a busy cab / footplate with oil fired locos. Oh, and if you see a oil fired engine with black smoke, the fireman is not doing his job. Just like coal you want to have a light gray haze to clear.
This has to be one of the best films the film unit have produced. Entertaining and informative at the same time. My dad was a passed fireman at the Longmoor Military Railway during his National Service and it amazes me that they had just 12 weeks to learn all that and how to drive as well.
That was fantastic. 10 out of 10 for Voiceover man. This has got to be the most informative video of the day of a fireman I have ever watched. Total respect to you guys and the hard work you do.
What a wonderful explanation and narration. I think thats the best and most realistic video of what volunteers do on many heritage railways around the country. Well done!
What a beautifully paced and narrated video. No disrespect to the normal output which is excellent but the difference of using a 'voice' professional to script and commentate has produced something special. Brilliant. Well done all of you.
Brilliant. I really enjoyed this video. As another commenter wrote you don't realised the work involved. I rode on the steam illumination train over Xmas and enjoyed "Voiceover Man" and the lights.
As someone who's recently started their footplate journey this year, this is a fantastic insight into the work and dedication that goes into the running of these superb machines. A wonderful video!
What an excellent video, really enjoyed that - great early Christmas present! I do hope a secure long term source of useable coal can be found to indeed keep these magnificent machines working to show those 'future generations'. Merry Christmas and a Happy, peaceful and safe New Year to all at the Watercress - can't wait to visit again in 2024!
30:23 wonder who’s idea it was to put bournemouth on 😉. wonderful video Will, was a pleasure to be around whilst this was on and chat to you all as per usual.
Well thank you, that was a really really brilliant video, really showing off the skills and work of all volunteers on our steam railways. Thank you and Happy Christmas. All the best Dave.
i know it will be some time yet but one as allways a great vid and to wil and the team and two i cant wait for loco 499 to shine and get back into running order :)
This was fabulous! An authentic insight to the skill and grueling work required to fire a locomotive. Preserving living history demands the same level of work as the original it represents. Thanks to each of you for the effort it took to produce this video.
Im 14 and turning 15 in 2024 ill be a cleaner in june 8th 2025 canny wait oldest railway in the world Tanfield railway. Diffrent to these locos cuz u have tender we just have tank
I enjoy watching your videos but I would be very interested if you could possibly do a video with the track gang as to how you do the curved tracks at the station
Would it be possible to have a 'heritage'/museum pit opened for production for heritage steam purposes? Given the price of the coal, it may actually turn a wee profit at a half/third of the current price!
Just a Note, Having watched a guy (Hyce) that works in the USA on steam locomotives, If the smoke is always pitch black, that is a sign of a bad fireman wasting fuel.

Excellent video. Really gives a flavour of the fireman's juggling act, and the pitfalls awaiting the newcomer.
Congratulations to the voice over man, Will and Richard, an superb video. Ray.

Thanks for the video. Being a fireman is way more than I thought of just shovelling coal in a hole.
What a fantastic video! Will, you are a very skilled fireman, very well done👍
In days gone by, a separate steam raiser would be employed before the driver and fireman booked on.
Peter did really well! Hats off to all firemen and Women
