Hi John, interesting video. According to my glass January 2002. VIN indicates vehicle manufacture June 2003. Things sure didn’t change much. A very Merry Christmas and Prosperous New Year to you and family. Cheers!

A great way to find the true age of a foreign hire car. 👍

Hire companies tend to fib about the cars age, especially in North Cyprus where I visit regularly. Tyres are always “new” too lol😂😂😂

Thanks John. A true secret code revealed.
When fitting a new windscreen that is not OEM, what specs should one insist upon to ensure Jaguar OEM quality?
Here in the USA I have heard that some national glass replacement chains use inferior glass, but I don’t know what to look for.

@@ToTheGarage john I love watching your wisdom on your car . I e a 1998 xk8 just like yours . I try and follow all your tips to maintain and fix . But I am not as good as you . Can you advice me on the Ada mesh exhaust systems . I have seen your comments . Just wondering is it worth the stage 2 as well , thanks mark

Stage 2 provides an extra boost to horsepower and a further step up in the sound of the V8 grumble. Its mostly a matter of personal taste The only way to know for sure is to find a local XK8 fan who has done the mod.or just listen to a lot of youtube representations of the sound.
The difference is bigger between Stage 1 & 2 than it is between standard and stage 1

Hi John - checked the dates on my early model convertible XK8 and found something quite interesting. The windscreen and door windows were June 1996, the same as Purdey. However, the quarter lights were April 96 on the driver side and May 96 on the passenger side. Does this seem odd to you?
    Cheers
    Richard

Hi Richard. I would not read anything too worrying into that. The glass is not made as a set and is batch produced. Also with our early cars there is a large degree of ramp up stock produced while manufacturers approve and refine their processes. Later cars will tend to pull from stock that is closer to 'Just in time' manufacture but a variation of up to 2 months would still be common as transportation delays and batching related to large items like glass can result in some reduction in use of product in manufactured order (fIFO).

Thanks John - wasn’t worried just thought it was interesting but your description of the stock management policies makes total sense. Can you tell the production number of the car from the VIN? Mine ends in 1742 so does that suggest it was the 1,742nd off the line?
