Let me be your acrylic painting teacher and I take you through this easy-to-follow, step-by-step instructions on how to paint a Christmas gnome, a beautiful landscape fun character image of "CHRISTMAS GNOME" with acrylic paint. Halloween is over and now it’s time to get ready for the Holidays! But one little clever gnome already got the jump on everyone and just finished his Christmas shopping already. Yup! After rummaging through all the major department stores on the planet, including, Macy’s, Bloomingdales, Saks Fifth Avenue, Harrods, Nordstroms, Walmart, Dollar Tree, J.C. Penny, Kohl’s, T.J. Maxx and Marshalls, he ice-skated in Rockefeller Center under the Christmas trees for a few minutes, sat on Santa’s lap, made snow angels, ate a snow cone, and then he grabbed a hot chocolate from a local food truck and he tied up his present bag, hopped on his sleigh, and headed back home because it was almost dinner time and his wife was making his favorite baked ham with pineapple! Tis the season for giving, and this cute fantasy friend is raring to go! So come join me for this easy painting lesson and spread the Christmas spirit! The first lesson you’ll learn in this festive painting tutorial is how to use simple painting techniques and color theory for blending the background for added depth and seasonal atmospheric dimension, using natural and heavenly colors to create a cool, crisp, white winter Christmas feel to your canvas, the perfect day for your button-nose buddy to go shopping for presents. With only a few swipes of the brush, you'll easily paint realistic wintery snow-capped evergreen trees, iconic symbols of the Christmas season. Then, after using chalk to draw the outline for your silly sleighing elf-cousin, you’ll paint a base coat of ideal holiday colors to build off of. The next art tip you’ll learn in this canvas painting lesson is how to paint clothing and cotton fluff with a simple stippling technique, making it feel so realistic that you would want to wear it on a cold snowy night. Then you’ll create realistic looking dimension with properly placed highlights and shadows on your giddy goblin to accentuate contour and form, followed by layering colors to create a realistic 3-D effect like a photograph. You’ll also learn how to paint snow with texture and dimension. STEPS:
1. 1 inch bristle brush - Paint background with blue, brown and white
2. 1 inch bristle brush - Paint distant trees with sky blue (made in step 1), black and white
3. Chalk - Draw outline for sled, gnome, and present bag
4. #6 round brush - Paint base coat for gnome, sled, and present bag with black, brown, yellow, green, red, and white
5. #6 round brush - Finish snow with sky blue, black, brown and white
6. #6 round brush - Finish green parts with green, black, and white
7. #6 round brush - Finish sled with tan (made in step 4), brown, black, and white
8. #6 round brush - Finish red parts and fluffy parts with red, gray (made in step 4), black and white
9. #6 round brush - Finish nose, boot and beard with skin tone (made in step 4), brown, gray and white

What does stretched and primed mean? Can you buy it that way in the store or do we need to do something to the canvas ourselves?
Hi Shannah, A primed canvas means that the raw canvas has been treated to allow for paint to adhere to it. Most canvasses that you buy from the store these days, or online, are already primed when you buy them. If you are purchasing raw canvas, than you will want to put a layer of primer on the side that you want to paint. There is a product called Gesso, that is specifically designed to be a good adhesion primer for art canvasses. If the canvas you have is white on one side and tan on the other side, than it is already pre-primed, if it is tan on both sides than it is raw. Stretched means that it is on a board and ready to paint. Canvases come in rolls until they are stretched and boarded. I hope this info helps. Have fun painting!
