  • What an absolutely beautiful rendition of Lionel Richie's "All Night Long." We learned that it took hundreds of hours literally to create this work of art, and it shows.
    We loved this one!

Yep my HBCU and my Choir 👊🏾 8:30 Jacob has written music for us that he flew in and watch us perform live, did a master class wit us and is an absolute gift to all musicians - he learned of the Aeolians because he became obsessed with Take 6 growing up and then learned of Oakwood through them, kept searching and was happy to find the choir doing rich arrangements-brought everybody together for the masterpiece.

@@Navigata1in the making of Djesse Vol 4 he’s cited meeting the Aeolians as a formative point in his career. I found it so deeply moving at the end of the album that the penultimate song ends where vol 1 began. When World O World starts after that, I felt that Jacob was stating that meeting the Aeolians was truly where his Djesse journey started. Thank you so much for being part of that group- you all are truly a force for good in this world

One of the things I love about Jacob Collier is how he can sound like all members of Take 6 all at the same time when he puts his own harmonies together. And then to do the song WITH Take 6...whew! Check out his cover of "Moon River". And also, his song "Time Alone with You" with Daniel Caesar.

Gentleman, wonderful, wonderful reaction. Loved your comments, your energy. This is such an epic good vibe song and your reactions were so upbeat and full of joy. Loved it. FYI: Jacob literally did everything in this video. The vocal arrangements, orchestration, obviously a lot of playing skills and he did the entire video himself in his home studio (his childhood bedroom at his mom's house. She made a very brief appearance as the petite woman playing the violin). Jacob has a totally unique command of vibrations and knows just what notes and harmonies to use to get the emotional effect he is looking for. Once again great job on this reaction. Thanks.

If I remember correctly, Jacob said that it took him ONE week to finish this arrangement on his PC. Of course the entire production with all of the singers (The Aeolions of Okewood University, Take 6 including the pre-recorded vocals of his own voice) and the orchestra took much more time not to mention the video editing.
He's just from a different Galaxy who came down to our planet, incarnating here to give his incredible presents of the "Music Of The Spheres" to all of us.

Some nit-picks. In his video ①, Jacob explains how he made "All Night Long". He said it took about a year. He wrote the orchestral arrangement in about 6 hours *_before_* getting on the flight. He lives in the UK, North London. So the flight time is between 1 hour and 1½ hours to 'Holland' (likely London Heathrow to Schiphol).
He got off the flight, and _eventually_ recorded the orchestral part within 24 hours. He had the help of Vladimir Nikolov to convert his MIDI/Logic orchestration into sheet music for the orchestra.
Later he recorded the parts with Take 6, and eventually 'THE AEOLIANS OF OAKWOOD UNIVERSITY'. Also later, he added the Moroccan Gnawa.
      Best Wishes. ☮

Smart analysis. Thank you. Lovely closing sentiment. Sometimes music can have its hooks into many of us, drawing us in and together. JC puts a lot into his pieces, but ultimately with such a sense of space that, as our senses slowly widen to the rich experience, it never ultimately feels crowded. His musical universe is bigger than most, inviting many returns and many visitors.
It seems to awaken many to a yearning for direct musical experience. His commitment to live performance and the direct involvement of his audience, shows him to be a musical pathfinder.
His music is generous and active.

I usually don't really like reaction videos but what I like about you guys is the commentary around how are you exploring something that for your experience is really new? What I really like about Jacob, and what you are describing and experiencing, is the real experience of musicianship being expressed. What he is doing is what we all used to do before sampling and beats and music programming and all of the tech that goes into creating pop records. Given that he's an extremely high-level Musician, his ability to communicate with a lot of different layers is extraordinary. The thing is, arranging and orchestrating and editing and creating content that has depth and originality is not new, it's just something that a lot of people have forgotten about because everything got down to what's the most basic thing we can do to attract attention and sell records. Jacob is making music to satisfy his soul and he's able to do it in a really articulate way. I really enjoyed seeing you guys entering into that experience and I hope you can find other incredible music that does the same thing for you. I can tell you that a lot of the explorations in modern jazz with great musicians like weather report or Mahavishnu orchestra, Joni Mitchell or take six or any other number of music based content that was not pop based, will be a great jumping point for you. I hope you enjoy the exploration and thanks for the video.

I don't want to say that the opinions of non-musicians don't matter. Of course they do. What I would say that if a particular musician is getting the attention of professional classically-trained musicians, then you should probably pay attention to that musician. A lot of my peers refer to Jacob as a 21st-century Mozart. The guy just has an unfettered capacity for creation.
And yes, that was Quincy! Fun fact: Quincey approached Jacob very early on when he started posting arrangements on TH-cam. In a nutshell, Jacob put Quincy on the back burner until he started to understand what he wanted to say through his music. Now, Jacob basically has a free license to do whatever he wants.

There's always a few people like you and it's alright, but just know you are flat wrong when you say pieces like this are just harmonic exercises. It's complex because jacob knows complex, he's not going out of his way to make it so any more than a regular person makes their song simple. Then as for the taste for harmonic complexity, we need only look at how contemporary classical gets treated by the average music fan to discover that any one person disliking something says nothing of its beauty or ""utility"".

@@dopaminecloud There’s always a few people like you who assume that others are not technically inclined nor have the life experience to make a valid comment on a topic…
That assumption is followed by mild criticism and a cliché “you just don’t get it do you”.
Having been a musician most of my life, played a classical instrument (viola), more contemporary instrument (guitar), and vocal work…I’m more than capable of assessing this piece and I stand by my assessment 100%.
I made a statement of personal preference that was supported with specific detail. You just didn’t like what I said, and that’s ok.
